Nadya Suleman, Octuplet Mother Explains to NBC: 'I Just Longed for Certain Connections'

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Octuplet Mother Nadya Suleman

After days of seclusion, Nadya Suleman, who last week gave birth to octuplets, finally explains herself.

"That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family, and I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that I really lacked, I believe, growing up," Nadya Suleman said to NBC’s Ann Curry during her first television interview.

In an interview scheduled to air on NBC’s "Today" show on Monday and on "Dateline" at 10 PM on Tuesday, the California mother, who had six children prior to last week’s birth, defends her decision to be a single mother of such a large family. Suleman, who is unemployed and living with her divorced parents in a three-bedroom home insisted, contrary to criticism, that she is a responsible parent.

"I’m providing myself to my children. I’m loving them unconditionally, accepting them unconditionally," she told Curry. "Everything I do. I’ll stop my life for them and be present with them. And hold them. And be with them. And how many parents do that? I’m sure there are many that do, but many don’t. And that’s unfortunate. That is selfish."

Just shortly after her release from the hospital on Thursday, Suleman met with Curry to talk about her upbringing, her failed marriage, health and her unemployment situation.

For seven years beginning in her teens, Nadya Suleman tried to conceive. She suffered three miscarriages. She tried artificial insemination and fertility drugs, to no avail. By 2000, a back injury and her inability to bear children had sent her into a deep depression, in which she told a psychiatrist that she had suicidal thoughts.

"And then the first IVF procedure from that facility — it was successful. And then I just kept going in."

The more cynical observer could simply chalk up Suleman’s octuplet adventure to nothing but a media ploy: She reportedly hoped to become a television personality talking about child care and parenting.

Suleman’s eight newborns babies, born January 26, will remain in the hospital for several weeks. Her six other children are aged 2 to 7. All 14 children were reportedly products of the same sperm, belonging to Suleman’s friend.

This woman is in for a rude awakening. I have four children, a 13 yr old, an 8 yr old, and the last two are twins. There are days when I am at my wit’s end and feel guilty because I question whether or not I have given everyone enough attention. The strain economically is immense! It does not surprise me with all the shows on TV about the mega families. It was just a matter of time before someone did it intentionally. I joked to my husband the other day that we have just enough children that nobody cares but us! And that is how it should be.

Octuplets Mom Got $168G In Disability”-CBS News The mother of newborn octuplets and six other children collected almost $168,000 in state disability payments for an on-the-job back injury that she and a doctor said was worsened by pregnancy, according to state documents released Thursday. Nadya Suleman, 33, became pregnant with all 14 of her children after a 1999 injury during a riot at a state mental hospital where she worked, state Division of Workers’ Compensation documents show. She stopped working, but had the six older children during that time, notes Early Show correspondent Hattie Kauffman. “There has to be some question,” says CBS News Legal Analyst Trent Copeland, “about whether or not a woman who’s disabled and collecting over $150,000 worth of disability payments is really authorized to receive those payments if she’s too disabled to work, but not too disabled to have at least a half-dozen children.”

Here’s what i read on Mahalo.com:Nadya Suleman Nadya Suleman, age 33, is the mother of the octuplets in California, on January 26, 2009. The unwed mother already had six children under the age of seven, all conceived by in vitro fertilization, before conceiving the octuplets in the same way. Suleman’s extraordinary conception has been the focus of an ethical debate.1 On February 6, 2009, NBC aired part of an interview by Ann Curry with Suleman. The full interview will air on the Today show on February 9, 2009, and on Dateline on February 10, 2009. Suleman said that she dreamed of having a “huge family” because she lacked a “feeling of self and identity” and defended herself against the accusations that she is “selfish.”1 On the same day, it was revealed that Suleman, who suffers from a “depressive disorder,” collected nearly $168,000 for a work-related back injury she sustained in 1999.2 Fast Facts Age: 33 years old in 20093 Worked at the Metropolitan State Hospital from 1997 and 200612 Divorced Marcos Gutierrez in January 20084 All of Suleman’s children were conceived via in vitro fertilization1 All the children have the same biological father1 Graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a bachelors of science in child development in 20065 Mother of six before giving birth to octuplets on January 26, 20096 Lives in her parents house in Whittier, California3 Children’s ages: Seven, six, five, three and two-year old twins, eight newborn babies (six boys and two girls)7 One of the children is autistic6 Nadya’s father is originally from Iraq8 The family’s 1500-square-foot home is located in Whittier, California5 Grandmother Angela Suleman filed for bankruptcy and had to abandon their home about a year-and-a-half before the octuplets were born85 Nadya’s father said they have “another huge house” and told reporters, “You are never going to know where it is”3 Nadya’s father said he would return to Iraq to work as a translator and driver6

so she believes even her autistic child only requires 45 minutes of “holding” time?

Can anyone explain why she was known as Nadya Doud while in high school? Also, I just checked the CA website that lists all present and past license holders for Psych Asst’s and she’s nowhere to be found by the surnames Suleman, Solomon, Doud, Gutierrez in all of California. Hmmmmmm. For those wondering where the surname Doud came from, her divorce petition, initiated by husband Marcos Gutierrez said her name was Nadya Doud, aka Nataline Denise Suleman. [Incidentally, they were married in 1996 but separated in 2000. However, neither filed for divorce until late 2006.] So this means she had the very first child after he had left.

Does Nadya realize that the only man in the world who would be interested in forming any kind of “relationship” with her—you know, just in case she ever finds that she needs that sort of “connection”—Michael Jackson, is having financial troubles too, and that the ‘Neverland Ranch’ is in foreclosure?

I’m upset that this single and unemployed woman intentionally brought so many children into this overcrowded world. What makes me even angrier though is that for the past 10 years Nadya Suleman has been receiving disability payments (for a work related back injury in 1999) and though she’s been deemed “completely unable to work”, she’s felt well enough to undergo IVF treatments and have 14 children during this time. Her doctors even advised her earlier not to get pregnant since this could worsen her back condition. She told a workers’ compensation judge in 2001 that her condition was so disabling that she spent most of the day in bed and had been unable to care for her first child. This woman Nadya Suleman possibly lied to the Disability Judge and physicians about her condition and then used her disability payments for IVF treatments. This makes me really angry.

My husband and I are unable to have children. When we looked into invetrofertilization the cost was between $20,000 and $30,000. My health insurance was exceptional and it wouldn’t touch paying for it. I guess my question is where did she get the money to do this if she is a single mom with 6 kids already.

From the grandmother, who is in a pretty good position to know the truth. Grandma Blasts Octuplet Mom: “Nadya’s Not Capable” Angela Suleman inside her home, which is already cramped with 6 children. “The truth is Nadya’s not capable of raising 14 children.” The mother of the woman who gave birth to octuplets recently is speaking exclusively to RadarOnline.com and says her daughter’s actions are “unconscionable.” All of Nadya Suleman’s children have been conceived with in vitro fertilization. The comments from Nadya’s mother Angela are adding fuel to the growing controversy that has already sparked an investigation by the California Medical Board into the circumstances surrounding implantation of six embryos into a woman with six children. See exclusive photos inside the trashed home. When Nadya, 33, decided to be implanted with multiple embryos, Angela was stunned. She told RadarOnline.com: “I was very upset. She already has six beautiful children, why would she do this? “To have them all is unconscionable to me. She really really has no idea what she’s doing to her children and to me.” Nadya lives with Angela, a retired teacher, and Angela says Nadya contributes no money to the support of her own children. Eight people - soon to be 16 - are cramped into a small three-bedroom house and fed in shifts. RadarOnline.com obtained exclusive photos inside the house, photos that are bound to raise more questions about Nadya’s ability to care for so many children and a RadarOnline.com reporter described the interior as “filthy”, with food on the walls. “How she’s going to cope, I don’t know,” Angela told RadarOnline.com about her daughter. “I’m really tired of taking care of the six children and need her to think about how she’ll provide for all these children.” Angela told RadarOnline.com that Nadya turned her boyfriend into a sperm donor for all 14 kids, but refused to marry him. “He was in love with her and wanted to marry her,” said Angela. “But Nadya wanted to have children on her own.” Nadya was so determined to have children, she first became pregnant at 16, Angela told RadarOnline.com. She miscarried, said Angela, and discovered she had blocked fallopian tubes. “How she’s going to cope, I don’t know.”Angela said that she and Nadya’s father, Ed, begged one doctor not to implant any more embryos in Nadya, who already had six children. But Nadya found another doctor to implant six embryos, and two split, resulting in eight more babies. That doctor’s decision to perform the in vitro has left the octuplets grandmother furious. “I’m really angry about that,” she told RadarOnline.com. Angela also voiced her anger over Nadya’s claim she was raised in a dysfunctional family and was lonely as a child. “We raised her in a loving family and her father always spoiled her,” Angela said. “The truth is that Nadya hasn’t worked since she started having her children,” Angela, charged, “while Ed and I battled to pay her bills. “Nadya promised to help me with the bills, but she never has. I lost a house because of it and now I’m struggling to look after her six. We had to put in bunk beds, feed them in shifts and there’s children’s clothing piled all over the house.” Angela told RadarOnline.com that she wasn’t at the octuplets’ birth because she was looking after the other six children. “But I saw the octuplets when they were two days old. They were so tiny and fragile, with bright purple skin, I was afraid to touch them but they’re all doing well. “Nadya has given them all Biblical names. Seven of them are dark-haired, but one, Noah, shows my side of the family. He looked so cute with his purple skin and bright yellow hair.”

I saw her on TV today showing her babies. What really struck me were her well maincured nails. How does somebody with 6 children at home have time to get a manicure, or even pay for it considering the financial status of her family?

From the LA Times. So much for the delusional claims of not receiving welfare. She also told NBC that she does not intend to go on welfare, though her publicist confirmed Monday that Suleman already receives food stamps and child disability payments to help feed and care for her six other children. Suleman’s publicist Mike Furtney said she receives $490 a month in food stamps. Furtney said Suleman did not want to disclose the nature of her children’s disabilities or the nature of those payments. “In her view these are just payments made for people with legitimate needs and are not, in her view, welfare,” Furtney said. “She just believes that there are programs for people with needs and she and her children qualify for some of them.”
