UPDATE: Hurricane Ike, Tropical Storm Hanna, Tropical Storm Josephine

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Hurricane Ike/ NOAA

Concerns are heightening as a whirlwind of weekend storms charge across the Atlantic ocean and head toward the U.S. eastern coastlines. Hurricane Ike swept across the Atlantic toward the Bahamas and the East Coast yesterday. It’s expected to impact South Florida Sunday night as a possible Category-3 hurricane. While Tropical Storm Hanna took 61 lives in Haiti as of Thursday, Hanna is aiming to hit the Carolinas tomorrow as a weak hurricane. Here are the latest reports from the Weather Channel, National Hurricane Center and national news.

Hurricane Ike
Hurricane Ike rapidly gained strength on Thursday in the central Atlantic toward the Bahamas and East Coast in the US. It is expected to hit south Florida possibly on Sunday night into Tuesday. Read more by clicking here.

Tropical Storm Hanna
The latest forecast predicts Tropical Storm Hanna will make landfall on the northern coast of South Carolina around 2 AM Saturday. Then, Hanna’s set to move quickly up the East Coast and reach the New York city area early Sunday. Hanna has already left 61 people dead in Haiti from floods and mudslides, ABC News reported Thursday. Read more by clicking here.

Tropical Storm Josephine
Josephine was last reported a tropical storm in the eastern Atlantic about 520 miles west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, and reported a fairly weak tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 50 miles per hour. It continues to struggle and is also no threat to land as of Friday morning reports. Read more by clicking here.

Hanna is pounding us here in the south…went to sleep to monsoon like rains last night, woke up to more of the same this morning, with no let up. Good day to stay in the kitchen and cook something fabulous!

Is there any data that support the statistical significance between the increase in number and force of hurricanes and typhoons and the increase in ocean temperature?

Kitty I don’t know, but there must be something otherwise the global warming premise would not hold water. No pun intended. I think NASA tracks some of the temp info.

Depends which article you read. It seems scientists haven’t been able to put all the pieces together to state exactly why there’s been an increase in hurricane activity. There’s still ongoing debate about the exact causes, but there’s no debating there’s been a warming of the oceans.

I think NASCAR does about as good a job as NASA in understanding hurricanes, they seem to be a world of their own since they can be overwhelming some years and totally quiet others.
