New York Governor Irked Over All the Caroline Kennedy Noise

In
this series, which started in July ‘08, wowOwow follows the political
news swirling around Caroline Kennedy since her surprise endorsement of
Barack Obama and high-profile placement on his VP selection committee.
Now, Caroline is ready to launch a political career of her own. With
the Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch, we’ll follow all the latest news.
The saying "seek and you shall receive" may not work in Caroline Kennedy’s case.
Word
has it the more people suggest that the selection of Kennedy to
fill Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat is a done deal, the more New
York Gov. David Paterson is resisting. It’s up to him to appoint the
next senator from New York.
The governor is frustrated and chagrined, the advisers said, because he believes that he extended Ms. Kennedy the chance to demonstrate her qualifications but that her operatives have exploited the opportunity to convey a sense that she is all but appointed already. He views this as an attempt to box him in, the advisers said.
"You have people going around saying, ‘Oh yeah, it’s a done deal,’" said one of the advisers. "The quickest way to not get something you want is to step into somebody’s face."The governor himself even vented to reporters on Tuesday.
"I’m
certainly hoping that the time to confirm Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton comes soon. Because we have reached a new high and new low in
areas of gossip, speculation, mind-reading and otherwise information
that I always wonder where the source of all this comes from," Paterson
said.
Meanwhile,
some other Democrats think that, although Kennedy said this week she would
support a Democrat for next year’s mayoral election, she’s still too
close with Michael Bloomberg, a Republican. New York Assembly Speaker
Sheldon Silver on Tuesday said he questions "whether
her first obligation might be to the mayor of the City of New York
rather than the governor who would be appointing her."
A
Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday shows that 33 percent of New Yorkers
think Paterson should name Kennedy, while 29 percent say Attorney
General Andrew Cuomo should get the seat. Another 4 percent pick
Albany-area U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, while 24 percent want someone
else and 10 percent are undecided.
And although Kennedy so far is refusing to disclose her finances, The New York Daily News has discovered that JFK’s daughter is worth at least a sweet $100 million. The crown jewel of her belongings? A 366-acre oceanside estate on Martha’s Vineyard, passed down by her mom, the lovely Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, now worth about $40 million.
At least we know Caroline, if chosen for the Senate, won’t be in it for the money.
