Streisand 'Difficult'? Babs Discusses Mother, Career and Gossip

It’s a good thing Barbra Streisand didn’t listen to her mother!

Convinced her daughter — "too skinny" and "not pretty enough" — would never make it as an actress, Mama Streisand suggested she go into the school system. Streisand, of course, wouldn’t hear it and followed her dreams to the big screen, stage, television and almost everywhere else. Now, having garnered Grammys and Oscars, Streisand this month picked up one of the nation’s top artistic honors: a Kennedy Center Honor. And, in honor of the event, Streisand sat down with CBS’s Early Show to discuss her landmark career, including defying her mom. Said Streisand of her youthful determination:

She kept saying, she was a school secretary, she kept saying, "You have free vacations, summers off and this is going to be good for you." I kept saying, "But, mom, I want to be an actress." "No, you’ll never make it. You’re not pretty enough, you’re not this enough, you’re too skinny." I was always very skinny. But I owe her a lot because, in a sense, I was proving to my mother that this skinny little girl, unconventional looking, I suppose, could be a movie star.

Indeed she did, growing past her dirt-poor roots and into one of the world’s biggest celebrities. And, like so many meteoric women, Streisand’s been plagued by criticism of her "difficult" nature. That nature, she insists, is simply a myth.

Maybe in the search for the — striving for excellence, I think may be perceived as difficult. It’s not perfection because there is no such thing as perfection. I remember writing in my journal when I was 15, observing an acting class, that perfection was imperfection. Because, otherwise, it’s inhuman, you know? It’s almost too perfect.

Streisand wasn’t the only legendary entertainer to take home an honor this year: The Who’s Peter Townsend and Roger Daltrey, George Jones, Morgan Freeman and Twyla Tharp were all celebrated for their respective works and contributions. Streisand’s in pretty good company, no? Not that we’re surprised by this funny girl.

I’m missing your point, Jim. I listen to Barbra Steisand several times a week, but my new personal favorite is Betty Lynn Buckley, another enormous talent who has been labelled ‘difficult’ at times. Peace and grace

I’ve love Barbra since the first time I saw her on Judy Garland’s TV show. Referring back to Brooklyn Gals’ post though, did anybody else notice what could easily be interpreted as a “nasty” look that Bush gave Peter Townsend and Roger Daltrey during their tribute? The best thing the look could be called is ‘strange’. Bush looked sloppy and slovenly slouching there in his seat. I’ll be so glad when he schleps his sh*t back to Texas so I never have to look at him again. Other than that the show was great.

Love Barbra and yes I do listen to her work. My husband used to go to the Purple Onion in San Francisco, eons ago. He told me that one knew she would become big. Congratulations on her honors.

BARBRA, You have Always been My Mentor as a Diva-In-Training! I never forget Your “Happening In Central Park” or “Happy Days Are Here Again”. I have always especially loved your “What About Today” album with “Punky’s Dilemma” & “Stony End” which included “(Don’t Know) Where I Stand”. I caught, by chance, when turning the channel, your tributes on the Kennedy Honors. Needless to say, I wept. They were tears of joy mixed with reminising. You have always been an exemplar extraordinaire - ever there. “Evergreen”, “Woman In The Moon”, “With One More Look At You”…that’s just scratching the surface beyond where you took us in “Funny Girl” - then “Funny Lady”…I found where Fanny Brice & her family have placed a Memorial for her in West Los Angeles. I think of you when I go there. It is a huge comfort of where I’m going & where I’ve already been - with you, Barbra. Such an excellent tribute - too short, however!!! You are ever our true shining STAR of Stars, Barbra! “The Way We Were”…I will always love you, as well as your works of art you have so generously shared with all of us. Thank You. Blessings On Your Head, dear Lady! PEACE ^_^ Jean Waldorf Black

You have to cut Streisand’s mother some slack… in her day her daughter probably would not have made it without conventional beauty. The 60s opened doors that were closed before as far as allowing people with more interesting faces a chance to succeed in Hollywood. And though mistaken, Streisand’s mom was probably doing her best with the experience she had to protect her daughter from disappointment. The lesson here is, take the opinions of others into account, but then decide for yourself!
