NY Post Offers Quasi-Apology for Chimp Cartoon, But Sharpton Marches On

The New York Post said "I’m sorry" — sort of — to those who were offended by its champanzee editorial cartoon this week, but it made no apologies to those it says took advantage of the situation. Al Sharpton, we think that means you.
In its apology, the Post says:
To those who were offended by the image, we apologize. However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past — and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback. To them, no apology is due. Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon — even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.
The cartoon depicting police officers shooting dead a chimpanizee was supposed to be a jab at the economic stimulus package and the Connecticut chimp attack, but many described it as racist. Others meanwhile said to take the cartoon for what it was and stop playing the race card.
Shouting "shut down the Post," Sharpton led a protest at the paper’s New York headquarters and will lead another one today.
"They thought we were chimpanzees. They will find out we are lions," Sharpton said.
Post officials says many are simply using this scandal to fan the flames of anti-Post sentiment, especially if they’ve been victims of the paper’s ire in the past. But, according to the Daily News, Sharpton claims past feuds have nothing to do with it.
"They’ve done a number of cartoons on me over the years, and I’ve never marched on them. They just don’t get it."

Oh Lordie…here we go again. I am off to the Circus with my daughter, you ladies have fun with this so called apology.
No one is going to get what they really want so why bicker about it. There is no winner or loser in this…other than a woman who is missing most of her face and some fingers.
Sharpton is not the only one speaking out about this. The paper is getting thousands of e-mails and phone calls. Deflecting the fact that this cartoon was reprehensible on several levels, by acting like Sharpton is the only one to care about it, doesn’t make it so. Here are 3 reasons they should be apologizing instead of making excuses:
1. racist
2. promotes violence against president
3. using a tragedy where a woman is in critical condition with her eyes ripped out and her face torn off… to make a racist, violent political statement.
Here is one reason why the paper doesn’t seem to care:
1. Their readers know they have a history of racism and don’t seem to care.
I agree Starry. Last night’s cable news shows covered it as we would expect. So many great points were being made about why it ran in the first place and how Rupert Murdoch is/was upset that it ran (because he is supposedly becoming more liberal because of his wife)…just a lot of information was given about the post that was new to me.
But for me the bottom line is the cartoon wasn’t funny. It wasn’t amusing, witty, interesting. It just lacked purpose and meaning. It was run because it is controversial and Col Allan (the Editor) knew it would be. From what the shows were reporting it may have cost him his job and now he is on his way back to Australia because Murdoch is giving him the boot. We’ll see.Elaine: …who felt they needed an apology…You GOT it! Time to move on.
Perfect !!! Nothing needs to be added.
