Obama Girls Headed to Sidwell Friends

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Contrary to speculation, President-elect Obama’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, will be attending Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC. Mercury News elaborates:

President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen private Sidwell Friends School in Washington for their two daughters.

A spokeswoman for Michelle Obama, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, says the Obamas considered several schools for ten-year-old Malia and seven-year-old Sasha but decided Sidwell Friends was the best fit.

Sidwell Friends is a private Quaker school in northwest Washington that Chelsea Clinton attended.

Many believed that the girls would attend Georgetown Day School, but obviously the Obama family decided otherwise. We wish the girls lots of luck, but know that they won’t need it — their father’s the new president! They’re automatically the most popular girls on that campus!

Irish Eyes, you like to mess with Obama’s name… I thought of you when I watched this. You have to get to the part where he talks about our “ninja” president and his name… but the whole thing is funny, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B34oBiDVpcg&feature=related

I don’t have cable, so I have to get Bill Maher’s Real Time in bits and pieces on youtube! I wish they’d show it on hulu.com, that is how I am able to watch the Daily Show! Both are great.

Barry O may not be the leftist free thinker that you all thought you were electing.

Yes, this wasn’t an independent decision—he considered his kids preferences, and I’m sure the fact that Malia felt more comfortable at Sidwell, where there are already kids there she knows and likes (the Biden grandchildren) played a part in the decision. And on Barry—it was a nickname his father also used when he first came over, and although it seems you are using it in a disparaging manner (and a bit overfamilar given his position) its quite a beautiful name, and what’s wrong with nicknames??

The Nixon girls attended Sidwell friends. I know it’s a long time ago. But there’s history to this decision. Lucy Johnson went to Cathedral School for Girls. There really aren’t that many options around Washington, especially considering the secret service protection they will have with them. I think they will fit in best at Sidwell since there are other children with similar “problems” of having well known parents.

I wonder what made them choose one school over the other.

DeBurca obj. I think it probably has to do with the fact that the “Friends - Quakers” are very open-minded, and focused on positive issues such as world peace, good environment, responsible citizenship, and more. I suspect the other school is more rigid, I can’t know for certain, however. It seems like a good choice to me.

I’ve read a lot about the Quakers and a bit about their schools. It does sound like a good philosophy to build an education on.

Let me qualify “a lot” I’ve read a few books about them, that doesn’t count as “a lot”, more like “a bit” lol but I know what you mean about the Quakers.

Ro, I attended a Quaker (all girls) high school in Philadelphia, PA. Everything you mentioned about ‘Quaker Schools’ is correct. Yet, you are remiss to assume that Quaker Schools are ‘less ridgid’ - IF you are speaking about academics. In fact, the emphasis on excellent academics is entrenched in Quaker ideology. Admission to the high school I attended was based on strict academic guidelines. Also, Quaker Schools were the first schools which embraced racial diversity. I’ve been to Sidwell Friends on a parent tour (1980-1981) when deciding on a school for my sons. I was VERY impressed with the ethnic diversity and the overall educational environment of the school. Most impressive was the look of happiness on the faces of the students. I’ve no doubt that the Obama children will be happy at their new school, and they will come away with excellent academic preparedness, while meeting children of all nationalities and cultural backgrounds.

What I meant is not exactly what I wrote, my apologies. I meant less rigid in terms of a world view, not education. I worked in the community with a varied group of people, and the one I most regarded was a Quaker woman. She was all that the others were, and more. Her openness to myself as a lesbian, for example was quite welcoming. She was equally intelligent, educated, dedicated and so on - she just had this special spark of ‘welcoming hospitality’ which really warmed my heart. And, she was a person who really got things done!

Well, the girls attended a private school in Chicago, did they not? A public school would have been out of the question, and I agree with decision. Barry attended a very elite private school in Hawaii as well.

When you have the money you usually spend it on the best education money can buy. The school they go to in Chicago is, as far as I have heard, about the best around. But it also costs about a $20,000 per year as opposed to $28,000 per year. Schools in DC must be exceptionally expensive. Obama attended a top school in Hawaii, but it was a real sacrifice for his family. I sent my children to the local public schools but, in Illinois the better part of the school funding comes from property taxes. So, when my oldest was ready to begin school we moved into a neighborhood known for its exceptional public schools. But although they are public and we didn’t have to pay high tuition costs, in our case it was a very big sacrifice to move into this neighborhood with its very high priced housing and high property taxes. We had to buy a much smaller home than we could have afforded elsewhere, and our taxes are a burden. But we made that sacrifice for the sake of our children’s education. It paid off. The sacrifice that Barack Obama’s family made to put him in the school he attended in Hawaii paid off as well.

DeB…I work for the mortgage division for one of the biggest banks in the world and my primary job is to pay real estate taxes from people’s mortgages and twice a year when its time to pay taxes to Cook County, WOW…most of us about fall out of our chairs to see the amount of the taxes in that county. I mean I have seen loft apartments that are 800 sq feet where the taxes for the whole year are over $5K…I just cant grasp that considering I live in a 1300 sq ft home and my taxes dont even push over $1000…. I guess what I am trying to say is with the property taxes being that crazy in Cook County I would HOPE and PRAY those schools are awesome!
