Obama Inauguration Speech: Read and Watch It! (Video)

Well, it’s official: Barack Obama’s now our president. In case you missed it - which we hope you didn’t! - here’s the text of the President’s speech, as it was prepared for delivery. We’ll post video as soon as it’s available:

My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

Let us all begin anew with dignity for all are brothers and sisters,” One Nation Under God with Liberty and Justice for All…” May this day bring Joy to everyone…Thank You wOw for posting the speech, I had missed while at the Docs, no radio reception in lead lined buildings! I to missed the inaguration speech. But I did read it hear on wOw. Hear are my thoughts, I am a 44yr. old American black woman with 6 children. Like most americans, I have taught my children that they could be anything they wanted to be. But for me, here is the rub. We, we’re all taught that as children, but the last administration, has so screwed over our children in the public school system .That, most have become jaded, and most importantly hopeless. My children for example went from straight A’s and B’s, to High school drop-outs; Why, because they were no longer being taught anything of substance. They, were being taught the same subjects, over and over again, and because they already knew the information, their test scores were high, which in turn made the schools look good; so they would get the federal funding. So Mr. Obama’s speech for me didn’t tell me anything I wanted to hear. He is tell the country what he thinks we want to hear, like every other leader we have had. But what are his priorities going to be? We can’t expect him to fix everything all at once, which I don’t but…… When every State in this Country is broke or going broke, and one of the first things cut is education that say’s a lot. True, we all are suffering economically but, our children have and continue to suffer the most. How can we make great strides into the future when we are losing such potential in our children, by dumbing down our future generations and not giving them the tools needed to compete with the rest of the world, and to help fix some of these problems, in the future. Most have forgotten, this will most likely be their problem to solve in the not to far off future. They are the young people, that are going to be charting the course of our future.I believe that you, solve the problems of today by educating the leaders of tomorrow. I was always taught that knowledge is power, and right now our children are power less.

Armiz, as an educator, what you’re desribing is teachers teaching to the tests. We teachers have our hands and reputations tied by No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law enacted by now past president, George W. Bush. Teaching to the test raises test scores so districts do not have money taken away from state and federal funds, but does not, I repeat does not teach children to truly explore learning, problem solve in life’s issues, and think for themselves. You as a parent have every right to be concerned. We would love to teach substance, where learning is absorbed through exploration of ideas, literature, science, etc. An example…. my students( gr. 2) are very interested in dinosaurs, but I can’t specifically teach it because the subject doesn’t come up on any standardized tests in elementary school. A shame! When kids are interested, they will learn. So let’s hope genuine re- assessment is made regarding NCLB, pressure to pass tests is reduced, accountability and knowledge is measured in more realistic ways, and we will all be happier with Mr. Obama in his support for edcuational reform. Please encourage your children to read, read, read a variety of subjects. They can still be empowered in spite of NCLB hang ups.

Miss Dee, I am not surprised to find that you are a teacher. Bravo and Thank You for your efforts. The posts remind me of that “It takes a Village …”. THat we need to get back to Local schools with say no more than 22 kids per class room. WE need to do like my kids 5 grade teacher did…He refused to fill out report cards and told the children to do so. This man was the most amazing teacher that any of my children had in so very many ways. He was Amgens Teacher OF The Year and The Most Beloved teacher I have ever known. Times have Changed so much over the last 100 years, it is time to take what we have learned and apply it to the New Technology.Leap Forward into these New Times. I Imagine you have al sorts of ideas that need to be heard…Hugs and Happy Day….

thank you Dee, I do understand that teachers hands have been tied. And I didn’t mean to diminish any of the historical strides made today, for us as a nation and as people. My fear is, just like 911 we are all swept up in the moment for a while, then we begin to forget what really matters. I am sure as a teacher you understand what I’m saying. I have seen and experienced more in my 44years than most should ever have to, and I look forward to our country being that great beeken in the night that we once were and hopefully will be again. My grandmother told me as a little girl that if you don’t have hope you have nothing. Unfortunately, she didn’t live to see this day, but she would have been proud as I am and truly amazed.

It will be up to US to make sure Washington doesn’t forget what really matters. Unfortunately we had a president who never listened to the people in the first place. I believe we have one of US in there now. Mr. Obama is more accessible, a known listener, so we’ll need to keep speaking out so he’ll hear us. Be patient and keep the faith. All will be fine, Armiz.

There are so many of our schools that need to be refurbished and some that need major over=hauling. A school building tells students, continually and silently, who they are and how they should think about the world. It can help to manufacture rote obedience or independent activity; it can create high self-confidence or low self esteem. Teachers and staff also receive information from the buildings they work in. Dreary, overcrowded classrooms and cheap, shabby furniture and equipment, especially combined with low salaries, tell grownups as well as children that they are not worth very much. In the book, “School” a young man recalls his middle school: “All the windows were filthy, paint and plaster were scabbing off the walls in the cafeteria, and the playground was full of trash. The place looked like shit, and it made me feel like shit.”

Yep that act needs to be modified extensively or thrown out completely and a new version introduced. Teaching to the test is what it is and this is not teaching at all. This goes for the states’ tests too. Most are abysmal and in essence demand that time is wasted from teaching what kids need to know and teaching to the test instead. I know—I taught for 30 years.

fp, They’ll never trash NCLB, but modifications definitely are needed, because we know we’ll never see the funds to truly implement what is stipulated in that law. Reality check is needed- no one likes to feel threatened in their job or made to feel ineffective, and that’s currently what is happening when district scores don’t climb. We’re dealing with PEOPLE not products…. lots of variables. You know. I bet you’re glad you got out when you did! I’ve got 8 more years to go.

Dee i sure as hell hope they do something intelligent with it as for getting out when I did—no I miss the kids every single day—where I live now in MN there’s not much chance of subbing but I’ll try. I loved teaching esp the little ones; great kids mostly. :-)

I watched it, I read it, and I printed it….and I know that if I read it again, I will discover something more than I have already. So much will change! I am thrilled, excited, yet somehow very calm about all of this…’it is, as it should be’….

There’s a lot of history in that speech and it does need to be read and re-read often—It’s a great speech and heart-felt. He even extended an open hand to the Muslim world which is awesome IMO.
