Obama Picking GOP Senator for Commerce Secretary

Barack Obama’s making good on his promise to work with both sides of the political aisle. The president has confirmed that he plans to name Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire as his Commerce Secretary, a slot left vacant after Bill Richardson stepped down amid an investigation into his management of state contracts.

While some Democrats had hoped New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, who appoints Gregg’s replacement, would pick a Democrat to fill Gregg’s abandoned Senate seat, thus giving them more power on the Hill, that scenario went up in smoke last night. As part of his deal with President Obama, Gregg said he would only accept the job if Lynch picked a Republican. And the governor agreed. The move may be more shrewd on Obama’s part than some think — with Gregg, a well-respected politician, on his side, Mr. Obama can hope that backroom persuasions and trust will help him shore up Republican support, something that goes far further than a simple Senate seat.

Gregg, whose political career began in 1980 as a Representative, reportedly has strong ties in the business community, and his lengthy career, including a stint as New Hampshire’s governor, provide him with the budget expertise needed during these troubled financial times. Some women’s activists, however, may be upset to learn that Gregg last week voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Bill, which makes it easier for victims of pay discrimination to sue for their rightful wage.

On a related note, The New York Times reports that Gov. Lynch has been leaning toward appointing centrist Republican Bonnie Newman to replace Gregg in the Senate.

Of course he voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Bill, he is a Republican and that was a pro-woman bill.

Another one bites the dust….(obama sure knows how to pick them) “Nancy Killefer, who failed for a year and a half to pay employment taxes on household help, has withdrawn her candidacy to be the first chief performance officer for the federal government, the White House said Tuesday” http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D96463C80&show_article=1

Libra: Another one bites the dust…. I wonder who’s in charge of vetting? Obama did fairly well in his selections at first, but now… I guess he’s running out of qualified people.

Morjorie…maybe if obama was vetted in the first place, then he would know what questions to ask of his nominees. Do ya suppose???

Marjorie….that’s the problem…no one is in charge of vetting…that has already been proven!

I don’t think this was a smart move, but I trust President Obama’s thinking. He must have a calculated move that isn’t apparent to the rest of us…..

You know, last week when the possibility of this appointment was announced, I took a look at the history of Governors in New Hampshire….For a very long time, the Governor was Republican, the Shaheen stepped in, then a GOP governor for two years, and now a Democrat is Governor of NH. It was interesting to learn that NH has no term limits on the Governors’ term of office, and Lynch could very well be the Gov. after the next election in NH! I was hoping, of course, that Lynch, a Democrat, would pick a Dem for the Senate, making it a Dem Majority on the Senate—-but now that is not going to happen…….oh well, maybe in two years….

I know that we don’t know all of the details but we just have to trust that it will work out. The questions that the media seems to dwell on are trivial.

Tax fraud is illegal and lands you in jail. Tax errors don’t. These tax issues were small in opinon if they had been ordinary citizens it wouldn’t even be a topic of conversation. Not a lot of money involved.
