Obama Set to Pick Clinton as Secretary of State, But Will She Accept?

Two Democratic officials confirmed last night President-elect Barack Obama is set to name Sen. Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State. The formal announcement will come after Thanksgiving, according to the ever-anonymous sources, and shows how far the political powerhouses have come since they fought hard for the presidential nomination. The move also proves Obama is building what he’s called the "Team of Rivals."

Many feared Bill Clinton’s post-White House career would complicate matters, but Obama aides say they were pleased by Clinton’s "unprecedented disclosures about his finances," reports Politico. But the Clinton disclosures were just the tip of the iceberg in this complicated process.

Clinton and Obama have obviously been in close contact, but "Hillaryland," the senator’s closest allies, also played a large role in "campaigning" for Clinton, say insiders. Regardless, the ultimate decision remained up to Mr. Obama, who apparently believes Clinton would bring what one aide described as "instant stature and credibility" to the nation’s international relations.

Some assumed Clinton would jump at the opportunity to become the nation’s top diplomat; aides say she’s also been mulling ways to improve her senatorial standing and has been waffling over which direction to take. The New York Times reports that Mrs. Clinton started talks with New York Democrats prior to the Obama invitation:

The discussions about an enhanced position for Mrs. Clinton are factoring into her deliberations over joining the cabinet, the officials said. Mrs. Clinton, the junior senator from New York, is wrestling with whether to abandon her independence to become the nation’s top diplomat or remain in a chamber where lack of seniority limits her influence.

Mrs. Clinton asked to join the Senate Democratic leadership after the November 4 election, and party leaders began trying to figure out a way to accommodate her without dislodging any of the current leaders, Democratic officials said. The conversations, they added, preceded Mr. Obama’s approach to her about becoming secretary of state and are on the table if she turns the job down.

One friend said Mrs. Clinton decided late Wednesday to say no, reasoning that she would have more freedom in the Senate. By midday Thursday, the friend said, she was “back in the indecisive column again.”

Things are now apparently "on track" for the post-Thanksgiving announcement. That would be good news, but that just means another week of unconfirmed murmurs. Yippee!

Honestly, I don’t know enough about Richardson or Hagel… their expertise OR their temperaments to know who would be better. But I know enough about Hillary to know, she is extremely capable and well able for the job, but also very ambitious and has been willing to let her future plans get in the way of making the right choice (ie the Iraq War vote) as well as the Bill factor causing undue drama. So, I guess based upon what I DO know about Hillary, I have to think there would be a better choice. However, should he choose her, I do think she is up to the job and I have such confidence in the good sense Obama has shown so far that I will definitely give him the benefit of the doubt for having much more knowledge of the whole picture than I do… and hope for the best.

hi, smart lady—-i’d relax on worry—-she knows ‘the-ropes’ cluttering the White-House—-it’s not Congress—-and she’s one tough ‘b….’, exactly what we need now—-she’s done so much ‘out-of-the-limelight’, i see no worries. ‘the female of the species’ is not only more deadly—-often more effective—-in 1 biz, i had 60 employees—-hired a woman ‘office-mgr.’—-talk about a ‘hatchet-man’? she really cleaned, as a ht-man—-fired 45 thieves, i never saw—-and the value of a biz is Not based on simple employee #s—-rather efficacy—-my net-worth soared—-please, don’t underestimate a female ‘chainsaw’—-and she’s one—-

Yes, I think I agree. I know she’ll do a great job. I just hate all the hype that follows her around. Obama must be very sure of himself if he thinks he can manage it.

i would say, ‘Obama’ is Not sure of himself on Global deals—-hence his choice—-She is—-her work on Africa, numerous global-glitches really requires experience—-or ya go to ‘hard-knocks’ U, and learn the hard way—-maybe we may soon sign the Kyoto Accord? for instance: Hillary knows the main Green-House prob is the USA—-bush’s refusal to sign if China (now small problem), or India (rapidly converting to ‘safe’ power)—-his refusal was ‘nutz’—- so, The 3rd World wants cheap power—-we’re using it—-here is where negotiations need experience—-i feel She knows the story——

Well, the world respects and likes both her and Bill too, so that on top of her experience and intelligence, should work for us too.

People around here need to get over their Clinton Derangement Syndrome and fast. Look at all the drama of the last week and all the leaks which I expect the Clintons are responsible for. Really? And who would be responsible for the leaks surrounding the other names that have been floated? Are you going to blame the Clintons for that as well? The “No Drama Obama” discipline from the campaign seems to have evaporated now that they’re in the White House. The Clintons, both of them, are too personally ambitious to be team players. Naturally. That’s why they knocked themselves out to GOTV for Barack Obama. It was all about them. Tell me—where were the other Democratic primary candidates campaigning for Barack Obama? Even Biden didn’t campaign for him until he was named VP candidate. Nobody without ambition goes into politics, including Obama. The move also proves Obama is building what he’s called the “Team of Rivals.” This myth needs to die. It’s become conventional wisdom among the DC chattering class and the politicians they influence, and that’s a serious problem. From an L.A. Times op-ed: Consider this inconvenient truth: Out of the four leading vote-getters for the 1860 Republican presidential nomination whom Lincoln placed on his original team, three left during his first term — one in disgrace, one in defiance and one in disgust. http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-pinsker18-2008nov18… Lincoln’s real rivals had already seceded from the Union and were building an army. Obama is talking about a “fully bipartisan government,” and he’s even exploring options for Republicans in major posts, and that ought to have you worried if he’s basing that on a work of what amounts to fiction by Doris Kearns Goodwin. As for me, I think Hillary is qualified to be SoS but I would rather she remain in the Senate for two reasons. First, Teddy Kennedy’s health will likely not allow him to do as much as he wants to on health care reform and that is an opportunity for her to help him lead. Second, I want her to challenge Harry Reid for Senate Majority Leader. He’s been a total waste of space and would really be a good opportunity for her to shine.

Lincoln’s major rivals were not the South but in his cabinet and a contentious bunch they were. Then he had McClellan who wanted the presidency to deal with and who considered himself a major player, even going so far as to call Lincoln an ape and actively politicking for the presidency, and then a series of blunderers and incompetents heading the Army of the Potomac until Grant came along. Kearns is right about Lincoln’s cabinet. It’s definitely not fiction. As for the so-called ‘myth’ of the team of rivals, look at the qualifications of the women and men he’s surrounding himself with. Even David Brooks was unabashedly admiring today in the NY Times re this team of rivals and their qualifications.

take a look at my Reep & ‘lincoln’ post—-from M.S. political science texts—-here? they spout propaganda in USA schools—-most just get ‘programmed’—-for starters—-you’d have to be demented to assume any Central Fed could handle 6, very diverse populations—-he preserved nada, crated a totalitarian state, while killing both millions, and 5 other Republics—-nasty fellow—-

Just got an email alert that Clinton is accepting Sec of State nomination. It’s another feather in her cap… but still… the way the Obama people and supporters have treated her, I worry that she will end up being scapegoated at some point, and that Obama will use the situation to shut down Bill’s career. The country will benefit from her service. Although really… shouldn’t she be the one pushing heath care reform through the senate? That’s her baby. And who needs that milquetoast Reid in that seat. What a waste. (Can anyone believe how they rolled over on the Lieberman thing? Sheesh!) The only great news in the last day was Henry Waxman’s new chairmanship. HOORAH! Waxman, Boxer, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters— these are some of the more outspoken Democratic voices that I find inspiring. Fire in those bellies, for sure.

Pi Interesting take on Clinton and Obama. Reid is stupid and a bore. He continues to get re-elected in his state because he blocks more storage of nuclear waste in Nevada. It just gets shifted out of his district. I like Waxman, my girlfriend worked for him when he was local. He doesn’t seem to like wasteful spending. I mean he seems like kind of a watchdog. Pelosi wanted him in the position, this may mean some changes in how they do things. I want Nancy to really put the pressure on and push the house to get at it. We shall see. Sorry, you lose me on Frank, he just keeps playing the same game and pushed those mortgages and blocked regulation of FAnnie and Freddie and now we have this mess. I have looked and looked and looked to see what direction the money came and went, and l he has too convenient an excuse in Bush. Bush - what is there to say that hasn’t been said? It happened on his watch, as well as everyone else that was there. I don’t quite get Waters. What is her main focus? I don’t always understand her motivations.
