Obama's Grandmother in Kenya: 'I Will Die of Happiness' (Video)

They’re singing in the streets of Kenya.
Barack Obama’s step-grandmother Sarah Obama in Kogelo, Kenya, celebrated with fellow Kenyans when news broke last night that the Democratic Illinois senator was declared the presidential victor.
Sarah Obama, 87, and her family ran out of their house in the western Kenyan village and started dancing. Bloomberg reports that she is already planning what to serve him when he makes his first visit to the village as the leader of the free world: Asian-style bread, called chapati. It’s his favorite, she said.
“I am so happy that I don’t know if I will die of happiness at the airport” when Obama arrives, Sarah Obama told reporters. “It will not only change our lives but the whole of Kenya.”
The rest of the extended family celebrated by dancing and chanting in the local Luo language, “Obama Biro, Yaw Ne Yo,” or “Obama is coming, clear his path.”
Obama’s relatives were also singing in Kogelo’s streets: "We are going to the White House!"
Country leaders even declared Wednesday a national holiday after Obama.
“This is a momentous day not only in the history of the United States of America, but also for us in Kenya,” President Mwai Kibaki said in a statement, according to Agence France-Presse. “The victory of Sen. Obama is our own victory because of his roots here in Kenya. As a country, we are full of pride for his success.”
Obama’s father, Barack Obama Sr., was born in Kenya and left the president-elect’s mother two years after his son was born. Obama met him once after that and his father died in a car accident in 1982. Obama’s first book was titled Dreams From My Father.
Obama’s half sister, Auma, told Bloomberg that although Kenyans are excited, she realizes that he won’t provide any quick fixes for their country.
“He makes it very clear that he is an American and his first priority is to Americans,” she said. “We support Barack but we have no expectations. … The shock hasn’t set in that we are the first family.”
