Hospital to Hold Nadya Suleman's Octuplets? (Video)

Nadya Suleman in the RadarOnline Video

The octuplet mother’s dream world continues to crumble.

Over the past few weeks, Nadya Suleman has been criticized for having 14 children while unemployed and living with her parents. Some have even insisted she’s trying to be like Angelina Jolie, while others have wondered about her mental health.

And now things have gone from bad to worse.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the hospital wants proof Suleman can care for the octuplets before they release the eight babies.

Nadya Suleman told TV host "Dr. Phil" McGraw on Tuesday that she fears Kaiser Permanente Medical Center may not release her octuplets to her until she proves she can care for them.

In an interview with the Times, McGraw said Suleman called him Tuesday afternoon, distressed after talking to Kaiser officials. Suleman has taped two episodes of McGraw’s show, the first of which is scheduled to run today.

"What she is telling me is that unless and until she has a better living arrangement, that they are not likely to release the children to her," McGraw said.

Meanwhile, as we pointed out yesterday, Suleman and mom Angela, who live together, can’t seem to get along. RadarOnline.com posted footage of the women bickering, but has released new footage in which Suleman explains how she originally told her mother that her baby bump was a tumor. Also in the video, Suleman says to have any more children would be the "epitome of selfishness." Mom questions if it’s "obsessive compulsiveness."

All publicity stunts aside, we just hope the childrens’ interests are at the top of everyone’s minds.

This is news ?

We have all said from the beginning that there is no way this woman will be able to care for these 14 children. The state should just do these children a favor and remove them from her custody now. She needs psychiatric care, they need foster care . Speculation is over.

Yes she will.  When she gets help from people who care whether an embryo is a living human being.  The call she made was difficult and I have questioned myself whether I could pick out which embryos should be fertilized because cetainly I don’t want somebody else doing it for me.

Which brings to mind how can we ask doctors to become God? Who has a right to tell you how many embryos that you can have when there is a risks of having babies with problems INV and the price is so prohibitive.

It makes no difference to me if parents are given the option to carry full turn even when knowing that the baby will have problems.  It is very fine line for a doctor to decide whether a mentally retarded child has no right to live and I am glad he doesn’t have that power.

Chester, I’m not sure how your response fits with this question. These babies are already here and they need loving care right now, by a mother who is "there", physically and emotionally, not running to starbucks or courting the media.

Whether doctors are playing God is a religious issue and should be considered as such. As is the question of whether an embryo is a human being or a fetus with the potential to become a person, but still part of the mother and her control. Science is taking us into areas of moral ambiguity that need some regulation that will satisfy the religious and the non religious …. tough decisions, probably why it hasn’t been done yet !

"Things have gone from bad to worse"?  Why?  Certainly, not for the infants.  It is the policiy of every major hospital in this country to have proof of the ability for proper care after being dis-charged from hospital.  Many people are not aware that most hospitals have a Discharge Coordinator that will work with the patients to assure that the patient can go to proper care at home.  Well, obviously these babies do not have that luxury.  So, if the hospital keeps them to insure that they will be in loving and safe environments, good for the hospital.  And, for the mother, if this causes her delusions to break to the point where she will finally consent to psychiatric help, then that is also a positive thing.

Personally, I have always thought the hospital would be negligent if they just waved goodby and let the babies go to a home full of chaos…god, what a horrible situation that woman and that doctor have created…

Diana, i am not question you, but how can a hospital hold the children for more or less ransom for the bill, which this sound like that to me? and by holding them the bill gets higher? does it? aren’t they stepping on her privacy?

I don’t know beans about the policies in that particular hospital, but it sounds like to me that they are trying everything they can think of to keep those babies in a safe and controlled environment, which is a heckuvalot more important than her privacy, which, she seems to exploit anyway by her willingness to expose herself to the public forum at every opportunity.

And, if their bill gets higher (neo-natal costs are huge, under any circumstances), so be it.  What would happen if the babies go into total chaos and one gets injured or, god forbid, dies?

The article didn’t say they were holding the kids hostage for the hospital bill, but because she has been "out there" and telling so many untruths, they want proof that she can be a good mother.  Who better to do that then the medical field?  They know what these kids are in for in the future.

you are getting off track, we aren’t talking about how inept the medical field is and has been, we are talking about the hospital NOT releasing the babies for their own safety, NOT CUTTING OFF WRONG BODY PARTS…..

well if the medical field can cut off the wrong body part, how in the world can they tell a person if they can have there children or not?

you are lumping the medical field in one fell swoop and that isn’t fair to includ this hospital.  if they weren’t proactive for these children, they wouldn’t be doing their job.  this hospital didn’t cut anyone’s limbs off, they are looking out for the well being for these children and actually for the six children she has at home that will be affected by these babies coming home.  haven’t you been paying attention at all to what has been going on with this woman?

her own parents are stating that she has mental problems.  she is praying on the kindness of others and the handout of the government.  she is not filthy rich and married to provide these children with a male figure in their life.  she is looking to cash in and if you don’t get that you have been living under a rock.

the rock i live under; there no law in how many children we can have. is the hospital looking out for the children’s or just for media coverage?

Shirley, Your question is rational. We live in a "nanny state" that requires that parents have a federal and state approved infant seat that can safely see a baby home from the hospital. Doing the math of at least $250. apiece times 8, How does the mother have the money to transport them home. What kind of vehicle do we have on the market than can legally hold eight infant seats? Does the mother own one now? What kind of vehicle will legally hold the octuplets plus the other six just to go to the supermarket for food? You see where I’m going with this?

I am sooo happy to hear this!!  I think its great that the hospital is taking this role and not letting those babies go home.  One way or another the state of CA was going to pay for these kids and at least they can stay in the hospital where they are safe.  They may not get the love and attention they need but I dont think they would have gotten it at home either with so many other siblings.

I pray for these babies.  They didnt ask to be brought into this mess.
