Octuplet Mom on Food Stamps Gives All Eight Babies Same Middle Name, 'Angel' (Video)

Maliah/NBC "Today Show"

Nadya Suleman introduced her eight little angels to the world yesterday. While they all have different first names, Suleman kept things relatively simple by giving them all the same middle name, "Angel." But that hasn’t stopped the controversy from swirling around the unemployed mother of 14 as we all wonder: Just how is she going to take care of her enormous family?

An interview the single Suleman gave to Ann Curry only stoked more questions about her state of mind and ability to support her huge brood. The soft-spoken octo-mom told Curry that she in no way expected to make money off her kids, and, in fact, denied receiving help from the government. We’ve included that interview below.

In addition to defending her honor, Suleman insisted to Curry that she doesn’t receive any government help. The LA Times, however, reports that she already was receiving $490 a month in food stamps and that three of her first six children are disabled and receiving federal assistance.

"In Nadya’s view, the money that she gets from the food stamp program … and the resources disabilities payments she gets for her three children are not welfare," Suleman’s publicist, Michael Furtney, told the Times. Furtney declined to specify the children’s disabilities.

Nadya Suleman did admit to Curry that she had struggled to provide for her kids, but was confident that she could take care of them, telling  her, "I will do the best I possibly can … I do believe … that God will provide in his own way."

But Nadya’s own mother had harsh words for her daughter. In an interview on Radaronline.com, that included pictures of the kids’ cramped home, the clearly frustrated grandma said she was already practically raising Nadya’s six kids. "It’s unconscionable," she said. Her daughter has no means to support the kids. "She already has six beautiful kids. Why would she do this?" Suleman’s mom insists she had pleaded with the doctor not to go ahead with the fertility treatments.

That doctor has now been revealed as controversial Beverly Hills fertility specialist Dr. Michael Kamrava. Suleman apparently paid his hefty bills with some of the $165,000 in the disability payments she got after being injured while working at a psychiatric hospital.

Here’s the aforementioned exchange between Nadya Suleman and Ann Curry:

This woman needs to be in a psychiatric institution and the doc needs to lose his license to practice for doing this travesty in the first place. The psychiatric institution she worked in would gladly accept her as a first class looney I’m sure.

I just read an article that she has had plastic surgery procedures (rhinoplasty, lip augment) to make her look more like Angelina Jolie. Where is the money coming from for all of this???

She longed for siblings, according to the interview. Does she realize she’s the mother, not a sibling? I feel sorry for those children.

Ki they actually do walk amonst us: *One day I was walking down the beach with some friends when someone shouted…..’Look at that dead bird!’ Someone looked up at the sky and said…’where???’* *** While looking at a house, my brother asked the estate agent which direction was north because, he explained, he didn’t want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, ‘Does the sun rise in the north?’ When my brother explained that the sun rises in the east, and has for sometime, she shook her head and said, ‘Oh, I don’t keep up with that stuff.’ * **** My colleague and I were eating our lunch in our cafeteria, when we overheard one of the administrative assistants talking about the sunburn she got on her weekend drive to the beach. She drove down in a convertible, but ‘didn’t think she’d get sunburned because the car was moving’.* **** My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car it’s designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped She keeps it in the trunk…* *** My friends and I were on a Lager run and noticed that the cases were discounted 10%. Since it was a big party, we bought 2 cases.. The cashier multiplied 2 times 10% and gave us a 20% discount…. * *** I was hanging out with a friend when we saw a woman with a nose ring attached to an earring b y a chain. My friend said, ‘Wouldn’t the chain rip out every time she turned her head?’ I had to explain that a person’s nose and ear remain the same distance apart no matter which way the head is turned…* *** I couldn’t find my luggage at the airport baggage area. So I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. ‘Now,’ she asked me, ‘Has your plane arrived yet?’…* *** While working at a pizza parlor I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time before responding. ‘Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don’t think I’m hungry enough to eat 6 pieces.* *Sadly, not only do they walk among us, they also reproduce!!!!* These are true statements heard by me and other friends.

I don’t care whether these are old or new, Frank, you gave me laughs! Here’s a real situation I jotted down––not so much stupidity as ineptness. Conversation at B.J’s this morning after not finding my Total Cereal: Me: (going to counter where young girl is manning station) Excuse me, but could you please tell me to whom it is I could speak to about something that is no longer on the shelves. Girl: You can speak to me. Me: Well, thank you. There doesn’t seem to be any Total cereal. Girl: (Punching in her computer) Sorry, but it has been discontinued. Me: What! (saying this with great consternation) Who on earth discontinued it? Girl: I don’t know. Sometimes things get discontinued and we never know why. Me: But somebody knows why. Who is in charge around here? Girl: Probably the manager, but he wouldn’t know why either. Me: You mean to tell me there is somebody who makes these decisions but nobody knows who that is? Girl: Pretty much. I’m just a lowly sales clerk so I don’t know anything. Me: Well, you don’t look or sound lowly to me. You have been lovely, but back to the issue at hand: There has got to be somebody I can yell at. Girl: You could yell at the manager, but he’s not here today. And as I said I don’t think he’s be able to tell you why. Me: So it’s like there’s someone somewhere who’s pulling all these strings and nobody knows who it is. Girl: Like God, maybe Me: Yeah, although he doesn’t seem like a Total eater to me. Girl: My mom loves Total, eats it every morning. Me: As do I! It’s a healthy, 100% vitamin enriched cereal, not like these fancy sugar loaded cereals that are a ubiquitous commodity these days. Girl: whatever. Me: Well, thank you, what you can do for me is to convey this message to your clueless manager. Tell him you had an irate woman on your hands this morning threatening to never step foot in this store again if Total is discontinued. Got that? Girl: I sure do. And thanks for shopping at B J’s.

The reality is in most instances when you’re talking about welfare, you’re talking about women who were “irresponsible” in their actions which resulted in a pregnancy. But in this instance, this is a woman who “knowingly” had multiple births. Both scenarios are just as egregious as the other and are not to be respected or accepted. The fact that she can’t see that what she is doing is a detriment not just to herself but to her children is what I find the most disturbing.
