Octuplets Delivered: 8 Babies Born at the Same Time. In This Economy?

Paying for one baby’s tough enough these days, but one California woman won’t let that worry her. The mother in question just gave birth to eight babies — only the second time in history live octuplets have been born, according to doctors. No one’s saying whether the mom took fertility drugs, but she did get one big surprise on delivery day: baby No. 8. Doctors had only seen seven on the sonogram. What a pleasant surprise!

The six boys and two girls, who weigh between 1.8 pounds and 3.4 pounds, were delivered by cesarean section in just five minutes by a team of 46 doctors and nurses in four delivery rooms. So far, all of the babies are doing well and are said to be breathing on their own. They were nine weeks premature and will likely remain in the hospital for two months. Doctors say the mother is resting comfortably and will be out of the hospital in a week.

Now she and the father are probably trying to figure out how they’re going to pay for all those diapers.

I’m glad it her raising those children not me. I am having a hard enough time with my 2. I just can’t image 8!

How would you keep track of 8 when they get to be toddlers? My aunt how had twins and said she had a problems because she would see one and turn around and see the same one, was never sure - don’t know how you could do it with that many, I’m sure she will have plenty of help.

Maybe give them each a collar with a bell of a different pitch?

;-)) Was ready to give my son a collar and a leash at times and that was just to keep my hands on him when he was 2, he could go farther and faster than anything I’ve ever seen.

As a toddler, my younger brother was like a cockroach; fast & sneaky. Even with five of us watching us, he’d manage to escape us. After one vacation where nobody could do any sight-seeing or relaxing because we were always chasing after or hunting for my little bro, my parents decided to keep him on a leash. It was a blessing; he couldn’t go far & it kept him within sight.

When my son was young they didn’t have the car seats they have now (his was the type with the little steering wheel) and he kept taking his apart. A friend took the back seat out of my car and ran a belt around it. He fixed it so I could put a harness on my son and attach it to the belt. That way he could stand up or sit down but not go anywhere. He loved it.

R.J.B.: Maybe give them each a collar with a bell of a different pitch? LOL. Good idea.

The doctors on TV this morning said they weren’t allowed to say that was what it was but that the odds were in the the millions that it would happen any other way.

This is a case where I have an medical ethics problem in regards to fertility drugs, if indeed that is the case. I would love to see this discussed by someone who is an objective expert in the field.

Diana T, I agree with you. If fertility drugs were used, it’s time to qustion their use. There is no way 8 children all born at once will get enough individual love, attention and emotional support. It’s very unfair to them to have been brought into this situation.

Not to mention the risk to the physical well being of eight fetuses being carried at once.

De: did you know that she had 6 children previously and was taking fertility drugs? That boggles my mind.

You are correct, Elaine…and that is IF they survive their first year. They will be very fragile for quite a bit of time, and I wonder how what effect that will have on their progression into healthy babyhood and beyond. And, why is it moral to produce 8 babies at once? I find it interesting that the Catholic Church will support this and yet, go against plain old vanilla birth control.

Diana: …go against plain old vanilla birth control. Good point. The dilemma for these parents would have been, which babies to kill when it was apparent all were firmly implanted in the womb. Difficult decision. Does make one think twice about fertility drugs. Can you imagine the expense to their health-insurance carrier (assuming they have one). ‘Million dollar babies’ takes on new meaning.
