On My Tiny Mind: Tax Rebates, Gasoline and a Great New Book

Liz Smith

Are you one of those lucky ones who will get a tax rebate check? You are already being wooed by Sears and other companies, but I think the best advice came from the Wall Street Journal’s Emily Green. She says that better than paying off debts or saving for the future would be to pay off your credit card balance.

“A $600 balance on a credit card with an 18 percent interest rate costs you $108 a year!” Better still, if you can’t pay your credit cards in full by each month’s end, then force yourself to stop using them. These interest rates just keep you under for all time.

Think about saving then. This is from the Chicago Tribune’s Gail MarksJarvis: “A 23-year-old who puts $600 into a Roth IRA that earns 8 percent a year could walk out with $20,000 when he retires.”

The Bush administration wants you to plow the tax rebate right back into the economy, to buy something, to rejuvenate U.S. business. I want you to sock it where it will do you the most good.

Riding the subway now costs Londoners $8 a trip. But, hey, I discovered last weekend that to fill the really empty tank of a Mercedes S-Class sedan, which requires high-test gasoline, costs $77.

There’s a book coming in June titled Smart Women Don’t Retire — They Break Free. This is from The Transition Network and Gail Rentsch. The subtitle is From Working Full-Time to Living Full-Time.

2008_0512_smart_women.jpg

This one is for boomers who continue to pioneer each stage of life and it’s being recommended by AARP, by Suzanne Braun Levine, who was the first editor of Ms. Magazine, by Dr. Eileen Hoffman, who is a specialist in women’s health, by Jeri Sedlar, author of Don’t Retire, REWIRE!

Lynn Sherr of ABC, who wrote the foreword, says: “Now that we, the groundbreakers, are at an age when we considered our mothers old but know that we are not … now that we are, or are about to be, in transit, some removed from those careers by choice and some by fiat … what exactly are we supposed to do – with our energy, our connections, our experience, our ideas? We’re scared, we’re excited, we’re eager, we’re reluctant. And most of all, we are bewildered …

“This book compiles concrete evidence that the angst of friends and colleagues is, in fact, part of a flood of concern across the nation. The good news is, we are not alone. The better news is, there are some answers here, or at least signposts that point the way to new possibilities.”

——————————

I am told privately that the Transition Network members are big fans of the wowOwow site. So this book is right up our alley and I hope you’ll look for it. I am sorry to be so serious, talking about money which I know nothing about, today. Tomorrow I’ll go back to posting all that young and foolish stuff.

Unfortunately I am one of the people who must await a paper check since this year I owed a whopping $4.73 in income taxes. If I had only known that it would be direct deposit vs paper check, I would have donated a bit more to charity and voided that whopping $4+ tax bill. We have decided that this winter we want to stay warm and toasty in our house, so our rebate will go into our propane tank. A 500 gallon propane tank, with propane at a huge whopping $2.09.9 per gallon, is quite an accomplishment for someone on disability benefits. The remaining goes into the bank for the expected higher than usual utility bills of this summer and the upcoming winter. Getting ahead in life is surely a roller coaster riding around a circle …. and I can’t seem to find the beginning and the end, nor a place to get off.

doll lady, i’ve been agonizing over where i pissed off the irs, but the “stimulus” is finally going to be posted to my account. it’s all spent, but the “stimulus” allows me to build that city code required fence to hide my garbage can and pay the doctor and last until some more money comes in. my monthly energy bill went up to $80 starting this month, so i am running to stay in place. i will celebrate with a chinese buffet with a friend. lots of broccoli.

I have been tossing and turning wondering what to pay first when “it” finally comes.

It’s a drop in the bucket. I keep making a list, trying to decide which thing I most desperately need help with… And in the end it really won’t make enough never mind to matter. It will be gone before my bank account has a chance to even notice it was there. A lot of hype but not much help.

This quote was mentioned as a favorite on Thomas Sowell’s website. “We shall not grow wiser before we learn that much that we have done was very foolish.” — F. A. Hayek7 Total Iraq War approved funding to date- (United States)-525,900,000,000 I can’t say that number. Too many zero’s. I can, however, probably articulate the figures that would provide health care to uninsured Americans, provide shelter and food for homeless children and majorly address the decline in our education system in our country. These are just a few “uncovered” costs relative to the gigantic sum above. The appropriation of tax dollars is a powder keg conversation and a look at where to place a $600 check to me, with respect to the big picture, is a match. Somehow I find it difficult to separate the foreign policy issues and decisions from the economic ones. A quagmire at best…

You think this war is expensive? Try letting terrorists fester and continue. Letting Hitler fester was expensive, I can guarantee it. some people cannot learn from History. Amazing.

In the long term, war cannot combat an ideology that fuels terrorism. In actuality, it can stoke the fires of those whom subscribe to that ideology. Education and presenting alternative ways of looking at things is another avenue to create the changes that may be more effective in ultimately reducing terrorism. Particularly with respect to the young people who may not have access to the knowledge necessary to shape choices and behavior. It is true that children learn what they live, I think. Change happens one mind at a time. I’m not sure where sustained change has occurred one bomb at a time. The operative word is “sustained.” The problems in the Middle East and the radical agendas are not new, they are ancient. As for the above post, I’m missing the point of the Hitler analogy. In what way do you draw parallels between the Iraq War and Hitler? If you were talking about the ethnic cleansing and genocide in Darfur, I could better understand your reference. With what we have had revealed to us to date about 9/11, Iraq’s non-existent weapons of mass destruction, etc. I don’t see your point but would like to if you want to explain it further. My oh my…we seem to have moved away from what to do with the stimulus checks. Guess that happens.

Mine is going to be used to buy copies of my book. Not to sell, but I love just giving them away.

The Islamic agenda had it’s start with Hitler in the 30’s. Hence the comparison. You REALLY think there is not parallel with the goals of Hitler and we can just sit all those radical murderers down and give them a good talking to (education I think you called it….)? WOW! That’s rich. Also VERY elitist, as per an earlier thread when almost NOBODY knew what elitist meant. Welllllll, that is it! We know best, sit them down and EDUCATE them to our liking!!! Ha, how ridiculous. Try it and let me know how you like that knife to your throat..I think Danny Pearl thought it might work too. I just dont think these radicals see it quite your way (even though your mother told you you were special) …you know?

I am not LOL and by the sound of your reply, neither are you. I think it’s possible to express an opinion without denigrating someone that sees it differently. I thought carefully about whether or not to respond to the above. I think I would have opted out until I re-read the line about my mother (I can’t even believe that I am writing that on an adult post designed to share opinions). I would ask the writer of the above post to consider reading this link. http://time-blog.com/middle_east/2007/09/news_flash_muslim_denounces_te…. An effort to live a life that shows respect for others and an effort to practice harmlessness does not make someone elitist. I believe that the pen is in fact mightier than the sword and there comes a time when it becomes apparent that you can’t just “kill” your way through a problem , whether it’s offensive or defensive. I once read that an “eye for an eye” makes for a visionless, very blind world. Lastly, it does not make a person elitist to disagree with the viewpoint of another but in unspoken rule, never pull in as a verbal weapon, another person’s mother.

Keep writing flowery prose while real men protect your right to do it. Some day you might appreciate it-when the murderers are at YOUR door. Keep up the nice writing. Neville Chamberlin (the biggest elitist of all time, maybe) tried sending Hitler a nice letter to make sure he saw things Neville’s way…for some odd reason, it didn’t work! Should we use force when the crime is directed at those in the US who are in harms way in our cities and towns? Is there no need to protect our innocent citizens from criminals? There is a need for use of force sometimes and liberals need to realize that you can’t talk to people who are of the mind to kill. They are NOT like you and me and are not interested in being like you and me and it is elitist to think that. Why do you wish harm on the GOOD people of Iraq and Iran? By letting these murderers go unattended you would wish them harm and possible demise. I really dont think liberals have thought this through. I think they just hear..no more war, no more fighting, which is all well and good- just someone please tell the murderers to stop! There are good people there who need our good men and women to help them, and there are murderers in great numbers (well not as many now that our brave President has taken action thank God) Do you think that we are not seeing beheadings on TV anymore because they all just decided to give it up? Just imagine how many INNOCENT lives have been SAVED by getting rid of these murderers! Keep up the beautiful writing though, and smelling the flowers, there are grown ups in charge to take care of you while you do.

I read the click through on the CNN (Communist News Network) and Time Magazine site-the magazine that is almost out of business (seems they are changing their tune..hmm). I ask you, do you think this Muslim would have had the guts to write this before the Americans cleared the path by getting rid of the radicals? He would have been killed. THAT is precisely why we are there-to let the good people of the Middle East SHINE without threat of murder. Isn’t it wonderful when it works!
