Openly Gay Mary Beth Maxwell To Head Labor Team?

President-elect Barack Obama’s cabinet may become even more colorful!

In addition to a number of black and female members, Obama’s transition team has reportedly started vetting openly gay union activist Mary Beth Maxwell to head the Labor Department. Though she’s going up against the likes of Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, Maxwell’s already received the backing of gay rights organization Human Rights Campaign and Representative David Boinier, who, interestingly, has also been named as a potential labor pick. The Wall Street Journal provides a bit more background on Maxwell’s bio:

Maxwell is the perfect labor secretary you’ve probably never heard of: a gay woman, community organizer and labor leader with an adopted African American son. And this founding executive director of American Rights at Work is about to get the full-court press….

Many labor leaders are thrilled by Maxwell’s potential position, with AFL-CIO and Change to Win, which is made of Service Employees, giving her a thumbs up. Other labor leaders, meanwhile, wonder whether Maxwell’s got the chops to take the national stage. This picture of Maxwell fired up at this Change to Win rally gives us a feeling she can hold her own. We don’t know what she’s saying, but it sure looks good.

Openly gay union activist Mary Beth Maxwell”… is that her official title? So, will she always have to be referred to as that if she makes it into the cabinet? Oh, right, if she makes it in she will become “Openly gay cabinet member Mary Beth Maxwell”. Hmmm… still isn’t easy to say.

Ro, I know … a real shocker, huh? Perhaps one day when people are use to the fact that there are openly hetersexual people among us, they will stop labeling them.

I’m just hoping she’s “openly smart” or “openly pro-labor” or “openly not crooked” or “openly ……”

Since I know little about this woman, I will trust that Pres-elect Obama is choosing her because she is the best person for the job. So far I like the way he is filling in the Cabinet “puzzle”. I hope they can all work together to change the course of the ship of State. It is a little frustrating that WOW chooses to present this Cabinet pick in the context of her personal life. Serena is right, did we talk about Joe Biden as the heterosexual, father and husband? It is demeaning to women to be defined by the “roles” they play, as opposed to their achievements and attributes. For me it reflects age old “sexism” and makes WOW look like they are stuck in the 1950’s, where this headline belongs.

Y’know what? I’m very clear on what I like in the bedroom. And I can describe it ever-so-clearly. But in every job interview I’ve ever had, I’ve never been asked about it. And if I got the job, and people started acting like knowing for sure what it was I liked doing in the bedroom was more important to them than what I actually did every day at my desk…well, I might even have a sexual harrassment suit. And if I got soused at the Christmas party and let it slip, and suddenly everyone knew what I like to do in the bedroom, well, they could laugh at me, but they couldn’t fire me. That’s the difference. But there’s no question that the GLBT community has a few human rights issues to discuss with America’s new President-elect. So to announce that she’s “openly gay” might just mean Mary Beth Maxwell wants the labor force to know they have an advocate at the table, whatever their orientation..

Ms Dee, Please, do not tell us what you do in the bedroom. lol It occured to me, it’s not about what she does, rather who she does it with. ??? Having written the above, I must also write; being gay or lesbian is not simply about sex, it is simply a way of life. Why is it people only think of us in sexual terms, and not so much like every other person, just human with a different preference for a partner?

That’s my point, exactly. Drives me crazy that anybody has to defend their “way of life” (in the most intimate detail) before their full-fledged humanity and freedom to express it is even considered.
