Liz Smith's Not Surprised Oprah's Sharing Her Personal Struggle

Liz Smith

I never cease to wonder at how Oprah uses facets of her own personal life to illuminate problems and procedures facing us all. She developed an entire successful magazine using this method and she gets results. 1) She defuses her personal wealth and specialness by appearing open and generous. 2) She illustrates problems and solutions that are common but very bothersome. 3) She instigates a sympathetic rapport with her audience by relating to them, being candid and down to earth.

P.S. She guarantees magazine interest and TV ratings over the next months as she lets her audience follow her latest weight loss. Can she do it? You bet. She is one brilliant cookie.

Why am I not surprised by my favorite lady’s analysis of this chapter of Oprah’s life. I do think Oprah is brillant. And I applaud her turning the results of hypothyroidism and overeating into a moneying-making vehicle. Well done.

It’s interesting that Oprah can’t stay in shape—despite the help all her millions give her. A personal trainer, a personal gym, a personal (low fat) chef, a stylist, nutritionist, buyer, fun work to do & fun time off, no money worries, all the attention she could want, all the vacations she could want, all the personal choices she could want, & a nice looking man who loves her on her arm. Maybe SHE should have run for president, instead of just endorsing Obama. It would give her something important to do, that takes her all, instead of just having fun choices every day with charity work on the side. Maybe that’s why she won’t control her eating—she doesn’t feel she deserves it all.

Liz you are 100% right about Oprah. The examples of why you admire Oprah are exactly how I feel and why I am so impressed by her as a woman and entrepreneur. I just wish more people could be open minded and see her through our prisms.
