Paging Dr. Gupta. Obama to Name TV Medical Guru as Surgeon General

Barack Obama is said to be adding a bit of celebrity to his Cabinet.

Not Judge Judy for attorney general, but Dr. Sanjay Gupta for surgeon general. Name sound familiar? It should.

Gupta is CNN’s medical guru and all-around cool medical dude. He would, by far, be one of the most — if not the most — high-profile surgeon generals in history. Having Obama add a bit of TV fame to his roster of advisers was a bit surprising, and there are some who are scratching their heads, but not about his qualifications, per se.

Liberal economist extraordinaire Paul Krugman reminded us in his blog about Gupta hammering Michael Moore over his movie, "Sicko."

Krugman writes:

It’s sort of a minor-league version of the way people who pointed out in real time that Bush was misleading us into war are to this day considered less "serious" than people who waited until it was fashionable to reach that conclusion. And appointing Gupta now, although it’s a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way."

But many others say Gupta’s a great choice. The surgeon general’s job description is that he/she "serves as America’s chief health educator by providing Americans the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury."

Providing information in an easy-to-understand fashion is one of Gupta’s trademarks.

"There’s no one in the United States better at communicating many complex health issues to the community than Dr. Gupta," Dr. James Curran, dean of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, told The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

CNN says Obama’s team likes the fact that Gupta, who now lives in Atlanta, has worked in government (as special adviser to then-First Lady Hillary Clinton in 1997), and also likes his stellar career as a neurosurgeon. But his communication skills were a huge draw. He regularly appears on "American Morning," anchors the weekend "House Call with Dr. Sanjay Gupta," does CNN documentaries, hosts a weekly podcast called "Paging Dr. Gupta" and provides medical segments for the syndicated version of "ER" on TNT

When the U.S. went to war in Iraq in 2003, Gupta was embedded with a Navy unit called Devil Docs. While covering the doctors in his capacity as a journalist, Gupta put on his doctor’s hat as well, performing brain surgery five times, the first of which was on a two-year-old Iraqi boy.

"Someone like Sanjay, who both has medical experience and is fantastic at communicating – I think that’s a perfect combination for the surgeon general," said CNN commentator Hilary Rosen.

The Washington Post says Gupta has told Obama’s people he wants the job, and the final vetting process is under way. Perhaps Gupta can finally get Obama to quit smoking …

And maybe, if Tim Geithner doesn’t work out, Obama would consider Jim Cramer for Treasury Secretary?

Gupta sounds like an excellent choice to me. His skills clearly enable him to meet all the criteria laid out in the job description, and with health-care issues becoming increasingly deleterious to the American way of life, he’s got a straight shot at the media to get new ideas and new policies before the American people.

I don’t think we need someone who made People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive cover as Surgeon General. Surely there are other, more qualified people to serve than a medical journalist. He may be a neurosurgeon but honestly, a primary care physician would have been a better choice. He’s been selected because he knows his way around a camera. In addition to Krugman’s objections, which I share, here are a few other bloopers in Gupta’s Hit Parade: Working mothers cause obesity http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2007/05/20/two-two-two-moral-panic… The Columbia Journalism Review didn’t think so highly of the job he did trying to explain McCain’s health care plan, either. http://www.cjr.org/campaign_desk/paging_dr_gupta.php?page=all Here’s the good doctor writing about how not enough doctors are “diagnosing” obesity because then people won’t know they’re fat (Note the female patient in the photo, not male) http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1655704,00.html Of course he overlooks the obvious: Doctors don’t write obesity on a patient’s chart because insurance companies are looking for any reason to deny coverage to a whole passel of insureds, by claiming they had knowingly risked their health by “choosing” to be fat. Gupta also appears on a waiting room TV network called Accent Health, produced by CNN, which I’m sure offers drug companies the chance to boost sales of their products by putting them in front of a valuable and captive audience just before they discuss their health conditions with their doctor. That’s just as bad as direct to consumer advertising on regular TV. Pass on Gupta. Find someone more creditable than a hot-shot medical journalist.

I’d rather have a neurosurgeon as Surgeon General than some of the numbskulls we’ve seen in the past.

I’m with Corrine M on this, I smell a shill. I want someone to challenge the out of control drug and insurance conglomerates that only exacerbate the problem and offer no solutions, just more of the same. I don’t want another “Vanna White” spokesperson, telling me I need a drug or more insurance, I want support and assistance to enable me to make better health care choices for myself and family.

I hope he takes a positive role on getting health care available for anyone who needs it. I guess it is an honor to be Surgeon General. But I agree with other writers who say that in the past there have not been good choices made. This man seems to be qualified and well known by the public. The basic desire is to get health care available for all and I know I repeat myself. As a health care worker and human being I wish to see universal health care for everyone in the U.S
