Palin Talks About 'SNL,' Hollywood and Pregnant Daughter

On the eve of Election Day, Sarah Palin told Tina Fey to not ditch her Palin costume just yet.

In a telephone interview with "Access Hollywood," John McCain’s running mate talked about being the butt of many “Saturday Night Live” skits, her pregnant teenage daughter and what she would have done differently on the campaign trail. She also said McCain did “great” during last weekend’s episode of "SNL."

"We hope that Tina Fey keeps that Sarah Palin outfit that she has because we hope she’ll be needing it a lot in the next four years. We’ll give her some material,” Palin told Billy Bush. “She’s very talented and it’s been nice to have that kind of levity in the campaign … I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Palin said she has also met Fey’s family — including her in-laws — on the campaign trail.

Asked whether celebrities’ endorsements of Barack Obama have hurt the McCain-Palin campaign, the Alaska governor said: “I don’t think that many in celebrity-dom are too much a part of representing the real hard-working middle-class Americans who have great challenges, especially financially."

So what does Palin consider her biggest mistake on the campaign trail?

“Not being able to anticipate the unfair shots that were taken at my kids and at my record that could so easily have been disproved,” she said. "Some of the things the media claimed, like I tried to ban books, which were obviously so false. We were unprepared for those inaccuracies in mainstream media, that we couldn’t correct the record fast enough. That kind of hurt in the beginning.”

And about the pregnancy of her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol – did she cry? Absolutely not, she said.

"Bristol is a very strong young woman and she’s going to be just fine and a wonderful mom,” Palin added.

“Bristol and I and the rest of the family know this is a team effort. And to be thrust like that into a spotlight on a national scene was perhaps an unfair shot to be taken. But really, if we don’t have thick enough skin at this time, as candidates, and I consider our whole family – this is a candidacy for all of us, we shouldn’t even be running for office. But we know it’s all going to be worth it in the end.”

The woman can’t open her mouth without revealing her ignorance, irrelevance and ambition. I’m offended with her constant would-be identification with “hard working, soccer mom, Joe six-pack, middle class” people. Only the slightest observation and investigation reveals that she has placed herself well above that genre, the mark of a real politician. She is beautiful, smart in a sort of way I find quite unattractive, and at ease in the public address system (not forum, where she fares poorly and cries “unfair” and “sexist” while lying and hitting others below the belt in ways that curl my toenails). But contrary to much other opinion, I do not expect to see her star rise above its current arc. She just doesn’t have enough substance and there are many other women who are so much more qualified and capable - and less self-serving, which ought to be the basic requirement for “public service.” She thrust her family into the spotlight when she accepted this nomination and it is blatantly disingenuous to expect that she and her family would be treated differently from any other public official and family. Clearly, she put ambition before family. What is more offensive to me is her utter lack of humility in assessing her own strengths and weaknesses, her lack of experience, education and savoir faire. A pushy woman is a pushy woman and it has nothing to do with feminism, so let’s lay that one to rest. She can play the good ol’ boys game like a man, but she can’t beat them as a woman, and that is the crux of the issue - both for her and for those of us who want to bring the real female voice and sensibility to the public place.

I do think if she had input into this campaign, it would have been dirtier. I also never thought that her daughter would be offended being in the spotlight. These kids live in a Brittney/Paris world and love the publicity. I don’t think she put ambition before family either. Her family seems to want this too, especially if it leads to something bigger down the road and gets them out of Alaska.
