Palin's Press Bashing Political, But Is It Good?

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

A good politician knows she needs the press. And Sarah Palin’s definitely a good politician. Her relationship with the news media, however, rests in a precarious position.

The Alaska governor made headlines this month when she came out against Katie Couric and the comedienne Tina Fey, women who, Palin claims, exploited her for their own gain. She has also lashed out at tabloids for following the trials and tribulations of her teenage daughter, Bristol, and her fiancé, Levi Johnston. The couple had their first child this month, a topic Palin didn’t shy away from while on the campaign trail — her children were often present at very public events.

While Palin insists her efforts against the press are simply to protect her children and set facts straight — for example, that the young couple are not high-school dropouts — analysts see something else happening: Palin’s intentionally causing controversy to remain in the national eye.

University of Alabama communications professor Janis Edwards waxes suspicious: "[Palin] does seem to have ambitions, and this is one way of staying in the public eye." Meanwhile, Leonard Steinhorn, a professor of communications at American University, wonders whether Palin’s biding her time before the 2012 presidential election, an election in which Palin said she could run. "I think she’s positioning herself," says Steinhorn. "She’s attacking the media as a way to generate support among a base she hopes will support her."

Attacking the press has long been a political game and plays off the public’s spoken or unspoken disdain for the "chattering classes" and "media elite." But such attacks can also draw journalistic ire. If the press feels alienated, so too could the coverage. Careful, Palin. It’s a tricky game.

This is definitely true. The media has not been hounding Sarah Palin. If you notice it is always “Palin contacted this news source or that news source….” so clearly she is attempting to keep her name out there. She would be well advised to do as she said she want to do, stay in Alaska and govern.

Belinda- I know people who voted for Obama say that Palin was hounded by the media and even they did not appreciate it. She has the right to speak up about it. You don’t have to accept it and that’s your right. I think Gov. Palin was hounded by the media and that’s my right to say so. Peace.

Maybe it’s your writing style that confuses me, but I don’t understand your point. The conversation thread has to do with Sarah Palin’s assertion that she is being hounded by the media NOW, post election. It makes reference to the fact she is only speaking up and to the media to squelch inaccurate statements being made about her daughter. The harsh glare of the media she was under during the campaign dimmed greatly after the loss. It is now a mere flicker if that….and it is Sarah that keeps contacting media sources to discuss her opinion of the presidential race, the media and how she was treated, the McCain camp and how they ran the campaign, what she wants for 2012, etc. etc. etc. It was she and her daughter that sought out the media to SELL photos of her new baby boy. The media are not camped out (as they were at one time) in Alaska following her every move. No, to the contrary SHE is contacting them, as if to say “Hey, don’t forget about me….over here boys!” She does indeed have a right to speak up and to the media. But what she shouldn’t do is cry foul when as a result of her contacting them receives attention, but then turns around and uses the excuse that she is being hounded by them. So you keep believing the big, bad media is out to get sweet, pure Sarah. Whatever it takes to get you through the night…..

Hi Belinda, I agree with you on this. If she is contacting the press, she needs to stop (though I do believe she was “hounded” during the election). I’d like to see her get involved in other ways; governing AK, studying hard on international/national politics, and commenting or getting involved in politics—but no more talk of children, comediennes, etc. It’s over—I’d like her to start anew. Now I know she bugs you big time. But she could potentially have my vote in the future if she does her work to become more knowledgeable internationally and continues to be a positive force for conservatives.

Exactly Susan! Why is it you of all people on this site (the one that was about to give up completely on wOw :-) actually understands what I have been trying to say for months? I agree with you 100% about the revamp she will have to do on herself to be considered a serious and viable choice in 2012. The question is will she? Can you imagine the power, authority and positive media attention she could garner if she evolved into a more serious, intellectual and broad minded woman? She would be a force to be reckoned with! But as she is today, and how she conducted herself during the campaign, she is only shoring up her base support (uneducated White women, older women, southern Whites and lower income White Americans - according to polls). Half of the Republican party left after she was chosen by McCain, she has little if any people of color supporting her, the middle class to a large degree have shun her, young people and educated and affluent adults weren’t being wooed by her. Maybe as she grows emotionally and intellectually, so too will the people she attempts to speak to. Every woman in my opinion has the potential to succeed beyond belief, and she is included in that belief. It just irritates me beyond words when I see women behave beneath their abilities….it grates on my nerves.

If she wants to be in the media spotlight so much, maybe Rush Limbaugh can use a co-host or a weather lady. She used to be a sportscaster didn’t she? She could do the sports for FOX. Oh… she wasn’t good at it? Well that’s ok, her fans don’t care.

Ha, ha—DeB I’ve got to ask. Do you not like or respect anyone that is remotely conservative? I thought you were a more of a libertarian, but you seem sold out on the liberal agenda. Now granted, Sarah and George are lightning rods—but is there anyone?

I am a 51 year old woman who has had a long time to decide what my views are based upon my own observations and education. To me the “conservative agenda” is fear and greed based and has been proven to not work.

Hmmm—of course, the liberal agenda isn’t exactly a success. Look at projects, welfare, birth control (doesn’t seem to stop abortions), etc. I’m guessing the answers are somewhere in the middle? I knew you probably didn’t have little kids, because you have lots more time to research than I do.

FDR’s Liberal agenda created the American middle class. Reagan’s conservative agenda began it’s demise and resulted, through the 8 years of Bush conservative agenda, with another Great Depression. BTW, I have a 26 yr old, a 21 yr old and a 6 yr old. I can do more than one thing at a time.

She’s attacking the media as a way to generate support among a base she hopes will support her.” that about sums it up…another drama queen who can’t tell time (her 15 minutes are over). Wake me up when she actually does her job and then I’ll pay attention.

You just gave me an idea… maybe we should start a movement to get people to buy cheap watches and send them to Palin in Alaska with a note saying “Your 5 minutes are up.” !
