Pat Wexler on How to Get Jill Biden's Look

ETCETERIST: Besides Michelle Obama, something else magical happened in the world of style last week during the Inauguration and America now has a new sweetheart, Jill Biden — 57 and fabulous. Everyone wants her look. But can they have it? Should they have it? And what exactly is her look, from your perspective, Dr. Pat?

PATRICIA WEXLER: I think it all happened for her on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" when she said what she said about her husband having the choice of either the vice presidency or Secretary of State. Instead of Joe Biden getting angry or uptight, it was one of those endearing “Lucy” moments, you know, a kind of comic scolding like Ricky would give Lucy when she was too out there.

ETC: And now, all across the worldwide web, she can do no wrong and she has replaced, I don’t know — Doris Day — in the blonde icon firmament.

PW: First of all, in case anyone is wondering, I do not think Jill Biden is cosmetically enhancing. What you are seeing is a very fit woman. To me, she looks like she has lost about ten to 15 pounds during the campaign. I mean, I know much younger women avoid wearing anything sleeveless, but there was Jill Biden in sleeveless Reem Acra on Inauguration night, showing a very fit arm. The essence of her look, and the specifics, is that hers is the natural look. Instead of up and fixed, her hair is a soft blonde, worn loose to the shoulders, beautifully cut and shaped to be proportionate with her body, her height, her face and her coloring.

ETC: Natural — you mean natural color and no makeup?

PW: No, I mean natural colors, natural shade. Rather than being dramatic, like a Chanel makeup look in one of their ads, hers is natural, more Bobbi Brown. A Chanel look would be alabaster skin, a prominent cheek, a dark lip, a contoured eye — very sophisticated, very city. That’s a wonderful look, too, but it isn’t Jill Biden’s look. Hers is a blended look; the natural look is a blended look. A soft eye, a moist rather than matte foundation that compliments the color of her skin, and a lip gloss instead of a strong lipstick. And it is all blended, seemingly natural.

ETC: So whether blonde or brunette, to get the Jill Biden look, think blended, not separated? I detect some political symbolism here Dr. Pat.

PW: Natural, not theatrical. Whether it is your face, your body, or your clothes.

ETC: And what about the brow?

PW: Very important. I think like Michelle Obama seems to have done, reshaping her brow from being sharp to making it softer, for a friendlier less severe look, so too has Jill Biden reshaped her brow. Nothing changes your expression more than the right brow. You can do it with Botox, or you can do it by shaping and using pencil. That is what, it looks to me, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden have both done — and they have gotten great results. They look fabulous. Natural. Youthful.

My dears, do you want to look great - like Jill Biden? Then find your own style, dress in clothing that makes you feel good and smile. Jill Biden’s look is taken.

Couldn’t agree more. Both Michelle and Jill look great because they look like the individuals they are and both seem comfortable in their own skin. Also, neither seems overly obsessed with their appearance.

I agree too. Exercise and be fit as possible, keep it simple and sleek. I think Jill is great. I have blond hair a little longer than hers, and on me prefer a blunt cut….but I like the layered cut on her. Very feminine, too. She is a doll…..as is Michelle. And I do appreciate product links….because when am interested rather just hit the link than look for the website.

While I have respect for Dr. Wexler’s opinions and enjoy reading her on wow, I must tell you that I have a feeling that this is a vehicle to sell her product line, and I guess I don’t appreciate the link at the end of the column taking us to her site. Perhaps, I am over reacting, but this is just not a forum to sell things…is it?

I agree, Diana. I, however, am yet unsure about my level of respect, but this fashion nonesense has been coming at us lately, ad nauseum. Frankly, I am tired of seeing grown women “dressed up” in little girls clothing, with their upper thighs leaking out when they sit down (tugging at their skirts as Ms. Biden has done many times, among all others who dress in scanty attire in public forums), tricket decor for, apparently, a sweetness demeanor intending to be translated to oneself, thinness to the extreme (like legs might poke out of the tights and pick the poor 50+ year old owners to pieces) and desperately trying to look younger. Age has its privileges, and should be commanding respect, now WOWS! Our society has two extremes on so much lately, one end pushing morality, and the other shoving it aside, while waving the moral banner. Sheesh. Just because we are in a recession aka “Depression of the new Millennium” does not mean hems have to hike, and prudence in dress does not have to take a hike. Hopefully, Wowowow will wake up; however, I know from the beginning it was intended to test the preferences of adult women, in our age range, but this is demeaning, at best. At least put out a Poll, and ask us, please. Basta!

Oh my, how we love to critique these women. They always look nice, yet there is always somebody who will criticize hair, makeup, dress , more. I have a friend who thought Jill Biden looked awful - and so it goes. I wonder how they feel reading criticisms of how they looked, when they felt they looked fine?

Lizzie, It’s a national sport…..all the reality shows are critizing this or that, making everything over. My first go around was design school and second, the UCLA writing program. In both you do your thing and lay it on the line. Every week putting your renderings on the board for the entire class to critique. I remember one gorgeous, perfectly professional woman I totally admired looking at one of my renderings and saying to me “I hate you!” One of the nicest compliments I ever had. People in politics, like people in the arts, need to listen for what can help them grow and improve, and forget the rest.

PS when I feel I look fine or have otherwise done my best…other’s opinions are just that.

Ms. Dee
Oh, Billy. Don’t listen to the naysayers. I really love what you bring to this site. But then, I’m always trying to figure out how to look my best. I agree with Mommy (almost all the time) that everybody’s best look is unique to them. I’d add that good health (physical and mental) is the bedrock of beauty, whatever your age. But after that, it’s good to be reminded, occasionally, that I do have eyebrows and I might want to take care of them. I’ve always said, “I have a front-line body…it’s seen a lot of action…” but fitness just feels good, even when nobody’s looking. So do carry on, Mr. Norwich. Whether it’s gossip or good advice, I enjoy what you type.

Jill Biden like Palin is one of only a handful of honest people involved in government. Joe Biden did not dispute the fact he was offered the VP or Sec of State job. He better not say his wife lied, when she didn’t. His wife spilled the beans, and all of you like Joe Biden are sweeping another Obambi error under the rug. Palin and Jill Biden in 2012. Not change, but honesty.
