Patrick Swayze Proves He's Just as Strong as His 'Dirty Dancing' Days

The man much thinner and wearier than we remember from the "Dirty Dancing" days tells Barbara Walters in a candid interview that airs tonight on "20/20" that he is scared and angry as he battles the fate of pancreatic cancer. Swayze says:

There’s a lot of fear here … I’m scared. Yeah, I’m angry. Yeah, I’m asking, "Why me?" … I’d say five years is pretty wishful thinking. Two years seems likely if you’re going to believe the statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I better get a fire under it.

With great optimism and strength, he has been able to continue working. So even though he’s not as healthy as the handsome star he was in past movies, he’s just as strong and passionate. The 56-year-old spends long days on the set for a new TV series called "The Beast," an A & E drama about an FBI agent haunted by internal demons. In real life, Swayze fights internal demons of his own. Most patients with advanced-stage pancreatic cancer die within six months of diagnosis. Swayze was diagnosed last January and the malignant tumor on his pancreas spread to his liver. He says he responded well to the first round of chemotherapy until it gradually became less effective. Now, he’s begun a new treatment and continues with a positive outlook. He says:

You can bet that I’m going through hell. I’m at the beginning of my battle. And I expect it to be a long, hard battle, one that I’m going to win. I keep my heart and my soul and my spirit open to miracles. I pray.

Our prayers are with Swayze, his wife, Lisa Niemi, and everyone else touched by the disease. The "20/20" interview airs tonight on ABC at 10 PM ET.

Barb, what a story. Your right about it all. I pray the best for him.

thanks for your reply, reading about Patrick Swayze really reminded me of the ups and downs of my husband’s last year, the hope, frustration, fear and sadness but there is always hope. My daughter’s friend’s father also has that cancer and he is going to a Natural Medical Center here in Arizona and has daily infusions of vitamins, he is doing very well. There is hope, there is always hope.

Barb, thanks for your story. We all can have hope and Patrick Swayze has that and then some, not giving up for a single minute. I am sure his story hit many very hard who are in the same boat, only losing or who has already lost somebody to this disease. It could be painful to watch for them, but his spirit can be an inspiration to many suffering right now. I hope he can remain as he is now for a long time, but he is ready for whatever lies ahead. I sometimes think Barbara Walters goes too far in her interviews, but that is her way and has been successful.

Yes, it is difficult to see him and how he is losing weight. My husband went from 190 on October 25, 2007 to 220 in a matter of a week from complications of a pain pump, I miss him so and I could so relate with Lisa Swayze, not knowing how to cope with the loss, we were married 27 years. I think that Barbara Walters really gets into her job, tries to be thorough but must not have much hope herself, I have learned that hope is all we have.

I’m not a fan of Barbara Walters but as someone stated above, Patrick Swayze did ask that she be the one to interview him.

I will forever remember the sexy way he and Baby danced in Dirty Dancing. His love of life and love for his family are admirable. I certainly hope his dream of living for a cure happens and if not, may he be blessed with everlasting peace.

I missed the show and I am sorry about it. I dearly want Patrick to win this battle. I also love Barbara’s interviews. She is not afraid to ask the questions which we have in mind and are not able or afraid to ask. SHe is a journalist after all.

I lost my husband to cancer in 2006 after being married for 38 years and now I, like Barb, know that I’m no longer afraid of dying. His passing at home was calm and peaceful and the end of a sometimes terrible fight with that dreadful disease…..he very much deserved to rest. Lisa Swayze’s description of going through these past days putting one foot in front of the other accurately describes my experience…..and there is no way that you can possibly know what life will be like without him until he is gone. My heart ached for Lisa when Barbara Walters asked her if she had considered that possibility. I would tell Lisa and Patrick to enjoy each moment that they have together and to remember to laugh, as they have been doing so far. My heart goes out to them……..they are on one of the most difficult journeys they will ever face together.

I thought Barbara Walters handled the interview with Patrick and Lisa very nicely with respect and dignity. My prayers go out to Patrick and his wife. If you want to watch Patrick and Lisa Swazye at their finest, get the movie ONE LAST DANCE.

Oh, I loved Patrick so much in his famous film dancing with Baby. I watched it with my daughter then with my granddaughter. We all loved it. Then in Ghost with Whoopie. It is obvious they have a great friendship. She can’t talk about it without choking up. I wish for Patrick and Lisa peace.
