Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

By Ann Coulter
Being really proud of America whether your husband is running for president or not. You know how Michael Moore feels about America? It’s the exact opposite of that.

In response to "Sunday is President George W. Bush’s birthday. On this 4th of July, do you have any special birthday wishes for him?"

Thanks for not letting Muslim terrorists kill me this past seven-and-a-half years. I owe you one, big guy. Don’t think of it as getting older; think of it as your birthday cake’s carbon footprint getting bigger!

Click here to read birthday wishes for the president from Sheila Nevins, Marlo Thomas and more.

Editor’s Note: Ann Coulter is a political commentator, syndicated columnist and best-selling author. Her latest book is If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans.

Even though I can’t imagine the founders of this site welcoming her as a member of their panel I’m still concerned at the possibility. It know it will certainly ruin the comfortable atmosphere of camaraderie that I feel among this group of people.

Sherrie- I agree. If that female (not going to call her a lady) gets a prime spot at the top, I’m outta here. She really makes me want to hurl… her all the way to the moon and not back.

I will not longer visit this site if you post anything by this woman.

This woman, Ann Coulter, is extremely stupid and self-serving. For some apparent reason, many people failed to stand up to her. I would enjoy a 30 minutes discussion with her; not to change her, but to expose her silliness.

Karl write your points of disagreement about her. People will discuss them

Well, someone should play devil’s advocate here; might as well be me. Okay, for all of you who have accused Ms. Coulter of all sorts of misbehavior and also for those who wish she would join the Russian cosmonaut program, I have yet to hear one you provide a quote attributed to Ms. Coulter to have aroused such a vehement response. Okay, ladies, what exactly has she said that is either untruthful or simply unfair?

How about her attack on the Widow’s of 9/11………

As mentioned already, she has said all sorts of nasty things about a group of 9/11 widows; over half of the footnotes in her book “Slander” were either wrong or just outright lies, and let’s not even go into all the lies she tells in the book; she has said that liberals are traitors who deserve to be shot; Rush Limbaugh LIKES her; she loves George Bush and helps him spread his lies. Enough?

The one that sticks in MY mind is the CNBC interview in October 2007, when she was asked if she had her way, what would this country look like. Forgetting politics, immigration, abortion, etc. The exact question to her was: “What is the Ann Coulter prescription that would make the fabric of this country different” ? And her reply was that we would all be “christian, tolerant people who defend America”. She then tried to say that all Christians were only “perfected Jews” (Old Testament / New Testament). But the interviewer, who is Jewish, wasn’t having any of it and asked her if she felt he needed to be a Christian. Her response to that was “Well, if you were a PRACTICING Jew, but you’re not”. She then went on to say how much diversity she found in “MEGACHRISTIAN churches accross America.” And that Christians simply were on the “fast track” and how Jews could be “perfected” if they became Christian, too. I found the whole exchange to be abhorrant. But, you’ll say, was it either untruthful or unfair? And that is her vitriolic genius. She doesn’t MAKE statements of FACT - she makes OPINION statements, such as the above, or how the 9/11 victims are whiners, or Elizabeth Edwards was using her cancer as a political ploy to gain sympathy. Or how about the statement she made, around the same time, in the New York Observer, that “a womans right to vote should be taken away because they vote stupidly” . Ann Coulter’s SOLE purpose is to make outlandish statements that defy intelligence and she has no place in journalism, let alone an earned right to be there. Bonnie, you talk about “misbehavior” which is defined as “improper or bad behavior” and that can all depend on who’s ox is being gored. The other definition is “inappropriate” and, if nothing else, Ann Coulter is the very definition of THAT.

Peg o Much better. If people would bring up the points then a good discussion could start on why we don’t believe her brand of ….whatever is not for whomever. We don’t own this site, we are guests here. We contribute to conversations and create an atmosphere here, but we don’t own it. I was glad to be reminded of some of her inanities, she is a real strange mixed bag.

Peg, Frannie and et al. I agree. There were so many distasteful remarks being made without any commentary. I only know Ann Coulter from her television appearances. From what Peg said, she is narrow-minded in her belief in Christianity and I do remember something about the widows of the first responders who, I believe, started to make political commentary but, nevertheless, they are widows of true heroes. I knew this discussion would be hyperbolic from the moment I read the headline and doubtful if any were here that would defend Ms. Coulter. So, I took on the task to keep the discussion from becoming a regular bitching session. I am not sure whether I succeeded or not but I am pleased that we now have a weightier list of grievances against the woman and just don’t want to shoot her off in some rocket located in the former Soviet Union.

Bonnie - we were posting at the same time! You did succeed in making me voice exactly what (to me) was objectinable about her. And I hope I made MY point about how she does not make factual statements but incendiary ones. I appreciate the opportunity to verbalize exactly how and why I feel and think the way I do about her.

Thank you Peg. I was unaware of some of her remarks. As I wrote earlier, I was only aware of her from her television appearances. She is incendiary and I often thought that was part of her “gig”. Sells more books by being outrageous. However, I do recall that she said in the early part of the primaries, that if John McCain, whom she disliked, was the Republican nomination, than she was throwing her support over to Hillary. She proceeded to call Senator Clinton “my gal” throughout the program. I wonder if she followed through when it became apparent that John McCain would take the GOP contest? As for this discussion today, I intentionally tried to stir things up in order to get more defined responses and less of the “Oh My God, what is she doing here?” that was taking over the commentary. Is everyone okay with that? I hope so because there is little I can do about it now, even if I chose to, which I don’t. I log on here for us to mix-it up a bit and to get opinions from one and all and, perhaps, to have intelligent debates about points of view.

Peg, Frannie and Bonnie, My problem with Coulter being on this site has to do with what appears to be a sort of “endorsement” from WOW and yes, it drags down the overall level of the debate about important issues which we all face as a country. I believe in free speech and think she should be allowed to say anything she likes, just as I am free to not read/listen. But, when you have a platform, a “tool of communication” you should exercise good judgement about its use. (sort of like “yelling fire in the theater” thing) If you know someone is prone to violence and anger and you hand them a loaded gun and they shoot someone, aren’t you an accessory to what happened? I just feel like WOW used a shortcut to get “hits” and I think this is a great site and want open and honest discussion, as I get from all of you.

Elisabeth S It may be a shortcut to get hits, or she may be coming on board. So what if she does? I don’t see it as the founders endorsing her, they all hold very strong opinions, and express them. It is just more variety in the mix. I don’t have a problem with that. What difference does it make? If I want to read her I will, and if I don’t, I won’t. Did she do anything to you personally? Everyone acts like a mass murderer is posting articles or comments on the site. Get a grip. It is just words. It is not life altering, it is not cancer, it is just words. She does not have the power to destroy the democrat party. Only democrats can do that by leaving the party, then it is over and would be replaced by something else. It isn’t going to happen. Where is our strength. It is so true when George Will said that we have become hypochondriacs. We are afraid of everything.
