Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

By Ann Coulter
Being really proud of America whether your husband is running for president or not. You know how Michael Moore feels about America? It’s the exact opposite of that.

In response to "Sunday is President George W. Bush’s birthday. On this 4th of July, do you have any special birthday wishes for him?"

Thanks for not letting Muslim terrorists kill me this past seven-and-a-half years. I owe you one, big guy. Don’t think of it as getting older; think of it as your birthday cake’s carbon footprint getting bigger!

Click here to read birthday wishes for the president from Sheila Nevins, Marlo Thomas and more.

Editor’s Note: Ann Coulter is a political commentator, syndicated columnist and best-selling author. Her latest book is If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans.

Ann Coulter is a friend of WoW?! I have been off-line for about 10 days- has something major happened to the site that I missed?! I thought WoW was a place for thoughtful discussions, an alternative to the polemics that pollute so much of public discourse. So, does this mean that Ann Coulter has a more nuanced and reasoning side than has typically been presented for public consumption? Or has there been a tectonic shift at WoW?

Lets all write to Joni………..The majority of the Wow women agree she is a despicable person. I realize she can make comments on any subject the same as the rest of us………but if she’s included as a regular contributor I’m OUT.

I like and admire Joni very much, but Joni IS Random House, and Random House, unfortunately for Random House, is Ann Coulters publisher. So, there you go.

Ann is a provocative thinker, in the vein of Michael Moore. Why threaten to leave a website, why not just leave or not read the selction. I am amazed at the lack of tolerance and respect here for opinions that are not mainstream liberal opinions. The best way to defeat the opposition is to closely examine and understand the opposition. You can’t do that if you put your fingers in your ears, and shout: La, la, la…I can’t hear you. I find opposing opinions fascinating.

I think this is a little condescending remark, Bella. Although I know it’s well-intentioned, I think wow readers are intelligent and not merely expressing their disdain for Coulter without some concrete understanding of “the opposition” She is provocative alright, but not ANYWHERE in the vein of Moore. When a person expresses baseless and condescending opinions we do not have to respect her at all. This site is about mindful discourse, not mindless babble. This is why even Bill Mahr has not invited her back to the panel. As he realizes he must present arguments from both sides, he finally realized that Coulter has nothing to offer. EVER.

J Atk- “She is provocative alright, but not ANYWHERE in the vein of Moore”—that is YOUR opinion. Obviously, you have no problem with the garbage Moore spews. You might not realize this, but there are some of us that think Mahr and Moore express “baseless and condescending opinions” and are hateful as well. That is the problem with the disgusting display of self-righteousness here. Everyones political beliefs are dictating their reactions and they are responding with the same kind of rhetoric they acuse Ann of using. If this were a liberal, like Maureen Dowd (no less provocative than Ann, in MY opinion), everyone would be drowling all over her. Besides, she wrote a little over fifty words, all of which are quite benign compared to the many, extremely, offensive remarks about Bush that have been posted on this site. Apparently, WOW’s new “rules” don’t apply to Ann Coulter.

Eleanor—I don’t believe “drowling” is a word, didn’t you mean to say “drooling”? Better proof-read next time before you submit.

I’m not going to defend what I said but I happen to NOT be a liberal. I listen with care and draw conclusions based on discussions that have good arguments, debate that leaves you in scrutiny of what is right and wrong. You make it sound like I’m a big fan of Moore and Mahr, which is not true. However these two bring up real issues and present cases for them. I’m much more likely to listen to people who present a point in any debate. Yes this is MY opinion, Eleanor. Maureen Dowd would not call 9/11 widows self serving cry babies. Bill Mahr would actually HAS republican friends. Michael Moore care about the sick and the economically disenfranchised. Ann Coulter has done NOTHING except went to fancy schools, and write biased books, sell herself on TV shows and stir up emotions just for the sake of being provocative. For your information, I am not just saying this before I lean more to the left. If I were I would be disagreeing with every rightist. But I’m not. I’m simply saying that Coulter is simply awful, no matter which side you lean. And from another 71yr old Republican who posted recently on this site, he happens to think so as well. Btw, if you think Michael Moore spews garbage, obviously you have never done anything worthwhile. That’s all.

Well, Eleanor—“You might not realize this, but there are some of us that think Mahr and Moore express “baseless and condescending opinions” and are hateful as well.” That’s a legitimate point and while I might not agree, and can’t stand Couloter, since you posted this…on that basis I’d think about it.

Miss Coulter. I’m going to take a page from our President and opt not to read the article. When I logged on…as our mother’s would and some of our mother’s still say” close your mouth, you’re gawking!” However, I took this as a miserable opportunity to go back to a question, “What was the most dangerous thing you ever did?” An issue I will most likely fight my entire life as it was caused my permanent disability. It took me back to thoughts of leadership. Facing, listening, Miss Coulter as one day I will run into my incident causers. My first incident 3 years ago did not go well. I’ve seen people throw pies at Coulter. I recall one quiet morning on Washington Journal (C-Span) OMG! Not so quiet afterwards! Campus heat last year, listening to Chris Matthews the Mrs. Edwards incident. Many of you could help me go on and on. The thing is, that this is why she should not be excluded from this venue. In my world I am never going to run into this woman, any other women like her or the men equate to her politic. How many of us will? But what we all will run across are the thousands that listen on the radio or buy the books and their rage. We have to not let rage equate rage.Nor should anyone sit with that passive sickening smile. It is so hard to take the higher ground, when all we all want to do is just (fill in your own blank), but everyone on this masthead created our site for us all to become better. To become stronger, to get a better sense of “I know you’re an idiot, but somewhere there’s common ground and we’ve got to find it.” I hope my words are not getting lost because right now, I’m sobbing because we’ve just got too much to do people…too much. Haters are always going to hate, they suck the air. I’m not wanting to attack anyone because that’s the distraction. That’s the diversion. When ever you hear it, it’s a scam. Leaders always blow right through. Our Independence Day is upon us. Let us all focus on next year. Our blessings to our troops, our loved ones and our beautiful country.

I’m assuming this is the momentary end of this thread…yes..we can listen/watch Ms. Coulter..but,gosh, I’d rather not…The function of crazy people is to make us all behave in nutcase fashion…I’m not going to ask the powers that be to never track AC on this site but I can just bip past it if need be….talk to me about how to find “out of print” old perfume….I think that’s really a serious topic…..Rive Gauche….wholesale? Okay and I want to tell you about this great pseudonym?avatar named Phillenda Blancks…..

Well, then let the Founders of Wow explain why they gave her a soapbox on this site. If THEY RESPECT her, I’d be interested in knowing why. Ricky would say, “They got a lot of splaning to do!”
