Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

By Ann Coulter
Being really proud of America whether your husband is running for president or not. You know how Michael Moore feels about America? It’s the exact opposite of that.

In response to "Sunday is President George W. Bush’s birthday. On this 4th of July, do you have any special birthday wishes for him?"

Thanks for not letting Muslim terrorists kill me this past seven-and-a-half years. I owe you one, big guy. Don’t think of it as getting older; think of it as your birthday cake’s carbon footprint getting bigger!

Click here to read birthday wishes for the president from Sheila Nevins, Marlo Thomas and more.

Editor’s Note: Ann Coulter is a political commentator, syndicated columnist and best-selling author. Her latest book is If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans.

Good suggestion Carol- I would be most interested in hearing the thought process as well. There are clearly two parts to it: who was asked to participate, and the decision to headline Coulter’s (rather benign) response. What makes me sad is the reaction on all sides. Look how quickly the conversation turned ugly. We have become so habituated to vitriolic conversation that it takes very little to reduce even this group to reflexive posturing. Given that Coulter’s main role in public has been that of ‘pot-stirrer’, I wonder why she was highlighted on the site. Is it naive to be shocked at I Love Money’s suggestion that the link is through Joni Evans and Random House? or is it more naive to even take that suggestion seriously? Was it mischievous, to see how the zeitgeist of the WoW community would react? Whatever it was, giving a banner headline to Coulter was certainly not “random” ;-)

I would like to hear Carol’s question addressed by Wow.

It’s not about party lines or free speech. It’s about integrity.

Thank you Kate and Deni, I reread all of my own comments, and don’t think I ever stooped to Coulter’s level. I also believe those that are angry with her posting is because they, like me, already know her history. Yet we were asked to give proof. I don’t know if that was because these people did not do their own research, or they wanted to see those vile comments published here. And from some of the comments I read, they seem to agree with Coulter on many of her past statements, but hide behind “her right to post here” instead. Fags? Jews? Arabs? The Edwards? 9-11 Widows? Even National Review got rid of her. And I know Bill Buckley would never allow such views because he did not believe in anti-Semitism. Look at the people who get upset with my remarks about Iraq, but then never seem to agree with me about how we have let down our forces in Afghanistan—the place that should have been the focus of the war from the beginning and the one I supported. Or when I tell them terrorism is rising in Pakistan because the Bush administration did not keep their promise to rid of the country of them. Now they are seeing the error of that broken promise. And all that does to us is put our own country in danger. Deni, So glad to see you back. Hope you got my message that I gave to Frank.

Carol I agree I think most of us are just expressing our opinion about her “published” comments, which presumibly are meant for consumption and comment. Is that not what she does for a living? So everyone who is so concerned for her “feelings”, please spare me. You are right neither Buckley or George Will would ever stoop to her level. Did you watch Charlie Rose the other night, all about Pakistan-very good show. Through our foreign policy we are losing an opportunity to see real democracy take hold there (and in Afganistan), while we try to enforce an artificial “democracy” at the point of a gun in Iraq.

Yes Elisabeth, And it scares me to no end that Bush (and his administration) is not supporting our troops in Afghanistan and as a result we are losing many brave soldiers. And now, the people of Pakistan are against us and even their own army are protecting the terrorists because of anti-American feelings. Had we acted when Pakistan needed us, we all would be safer. Also Elisabeth, have you noticed the people who attack us when we go against the “Republican point of view” never comment to the Founders of Wow when they have said the same thing? I have just as many anti-Bush/war statements (see their birthday wishes for him) from them, but they do not get called out on that. In my heart, I truly believe Obama will be looking at these issues more than McCain—only because McCain has yet to address them because to do so would be going against Bush.

Carol, I don’t think that you “stooped’ to any level. You didn’t call her names or say you were going to vomit. I left you a response on some earlier posts that you questioned me about. Hang in there.

Hey Frannie, I just got through answering your last comment to me. And I sincerely hope you understand why I feel the way I do. As for “vomit” I thought that was pretty funny coming from Donna because it is so unlike her. Her responses are usually tempered.

Carol That is true about Dona. She is always so kind.

Hi Carol,

No I did not get your message. Now where is Frank? Frank, you are in so much trouble…

Deni It seems like everyone is in trouble today.

Please explain to me how anything Ann Coulter has said or written is any worse than the vitriolic language used about her that I have read here tonight. Let’s hold ourselves to the same standard we hold others to. Ann Coulter says what she believes and her message is consistent. I am tired of the hypocrisy that passes itself off as political correctness. I do not express my views in the same manner as Ann Coulter does, but I defend her right to express hers! By Deb

You have a good point. I fear that the first amendment has worked against us in this regard. Ann is the one person whose freedom of expression should be suppressed from the general public. I’m sure there is a lot of crazy people out there like her, but at least we don’t have them gawk on TV. That’s all I have to say. Hooray to the freedom of speech, I guess…

You have a good point, Deb. We are all entitled to free expression and speech. BUT… Just to be clear, Ann Coulter said this to Matt Lauer once: (on the subject of 9/11 widows) “These broads are millionaires stalked by stalked by grief-parazzies”? “I have never seen people enjoying their husband’s deaths so much”. I guess she HAS said something that is the worst. Ann is the one person whose freedom of expression should be suppressed from the general public. I’m sure there is a lot of crazy people out there like her, but at least we don’t have them gawk on TV. Hooray for the freedom of speech, I guess…

J Atk It was an appalling statement to make, as well as rather stupid. She got some air time after that, but then the networks didn’t bring her on very much. The market took care of it. I don’t really watch the morning shows, but I haven’t seen her on much lately, I don’t watch that much anymore, but I haven’t heard any great controversies over her lately.
