Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

By Ann Coulter
Being really proud of America whether your husband is running for president or not. You know how Michael Moore feels about America? It’s the exact opposite of that.

In response to "Sunday is President George W. Bush’s birthday. On this 4th of July, do you have any special birthday wishes for him?"

Thanks for not letting Muslim terrorists kill me this past seven-and-a-half years. I owe you one, big guy. Don’t think of it as getting older; think of it as your birthday cake’s carbon footprint getting bigger!

Click here to read birthday wishes for the president from Sheila Nevins, Marlo Thomas and more.

Editor’s Note: Ann Coulter is a political commentator, syndicated columnist and best-selling author. Her latest book is If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans.

Dona I don’t have any problem with criticizing our president. I have a right to, so does everyone on this site. This is our country and we have freedom of speech. Hey, I voted for Gore. It is the name calling that I think is petty, like comparing the president to Hitler, while Bush has done more than any other leader of any other nation to fight aids in Africa, to insure that population is not exterminated. Hitler was exterminating a people, and as many as he could. So did Stalin. I did not like the Neocon vision for the world, I always thought it was wrong. I was against going into Iraq, and many more issues I disagreed with this administration. As you said “I wish we could rise above the pettiness.” It seems like we can’t. I believe in free speech, whether anyone agrees with the free speech or not. I just believe it is disingenuous to speak hatefully about our politicians, especially those on the opposite side of the aisle, and then complain when someone like Coultere does it. Yes, she had been pretty rude. Why would anyone say some of that stuff. But take a look at ourselves, it doesn’t seem hypocritical to you? It is okay for liberals but not for conservatives. Many jumped on this thread to jump on Coulter and the founders. They have a right to do that, but Coulter’s remark was not that controversial, nor was it degrading. It was predictable. I was hoping to find a good wit that would have countered her as Buckley used to do with his political opponents. Reaction took hold instead of a wise or measured response. Therefore Coulter had the upper hand. Dona, that wasn’t dissent - that was hate and anger. We can all sound like we are smart and know what the answers are, but when faced with adversity, not many knew how to handle it. Where are the problem solvers?

Hi Frannie!

No she would not be accepted here, no matter what her views are. It is that she has espoused and incited violence against people. It is that she has spoken of and to people in the most vile of terms. It is her personhood and her complete lack of respect for other human beings.

If you recall there were a few women here, who called themselves liberals and spoke in vile terms, with no respect for anyone who did not share their narrow viewpoints. Other people, who are liberals, wrote tirelessly to the founders, asking that these women not be allowed to post here in such a manner.

What good does it do to have the rules and then give someone a forum, who embodies everything our new rules reject?

People who treat other people as though they are garbage to be spit upon and are an embarrassment to our country, are certainly an embarrassment to this site.

Hi Deni! Good to see you. I fully understand and appreciate your feelings. One of the women that you describe up there is still here, but under a new name. Another, may have also reinvented herself and be here. Who knows? They are playing within the rules. They didn’t get kicked off, and now if any of us get out of hand, the Duchess steps in. I love the Duchess. Someday when she is not looking I might borrow her tiarra and take it on a night out. If Coulter plays by the rules, which she did, then do we have a right to censure her? The rules are the same for all. That is democracy. If she doesn’t play fair, then she shouldn’t be here. AC didn’t respond to any posts with hateful or rude comments. If she does, then she should be deleted. There are many posters on this site that we take at face value by what they post. We don’t know what they are like in their regular lives. They could behave cruelly to people. I don’t know. Do we ‘weed’ them out? It is not for me to judge who deserves to be here, I am not the thought police. Maybe my problem is that when I heard she said something inflammatory, I didn’t give it the time of day. I remember hearing something once and just rolled my eyes and thought, for such an intelligent woman, socially she is her worst enemy. Otherwise she is laughing all the way to the bank. She doesn’t care what you or I think. We don’t buy her books. She also let herself be a target on this site. She knew what would happen. It consolidated many democrat constituents. People who shied away from each other were joining together to give here what for. I don’t really see what harm she has done here. I would prefer to behave better than her. Deni, I am not trying to convince anyone else to see it as I do. I have been involved in political campaigns, you should here what they say about their opponents, on both sides. Pitiful. Behind the scenes they all do it and laugh it off. It is not right, but she was sounding like some of those men. I understand why you take your stand and I respect you for it.

Hi Frannie!

My issue is that she was invited here at all. I was horrified that wow had titled her “a friend”. And not just because of the idiotic stuff she says. She used her own website to post a person’s private unlisted phone number and people terrorized the woman and her children. AC left the number on her front page for a year. All because the woman had written an article, criticizing AC, for wishing death to her opponents.

I only posted here to you, because of your statement that if AC was a liberal, she would be accepted. I was pointing out , that she would not be accepted, no matter what her affiliation. And I used the example of the nameless one (or ones), to illustrate my point.

I won’t stay on this thread any longer, but it is good to type with you!

Deni Thanks for the response. I am really done with this. I am tired of this thread and my posts are so long, because I am tired. In the reply box they don’t seem so long Oh well. Keep standing for what you believe. I always respect you for that. I don’t recall you calling her any names and that is one of the reasons I respect you.

Frannie Pleas reread my comment; I said this site IS one of civility, which is why I was disappointed to see Ann Coulter’s writing featured. I believe that suggests the whole reason I come here is for the civility that’s lacking in other places. She didn’t just comment like others, it was placed boldly on the “front page,” which seems to suggest the site was lending support to the tone she uses and has often boldly declared to be purposefully uncivil. I don’t know what you read in my comment that you considered uncivil about her; I made no comments about her, simply said her tone is not appropriate for what my understanding is of the goals of this site. I think you may have misread in a moment of pique.

Darby, Point taken. You were very civil and had a right to say whatever you wanted to . I think at that point I was so tired of the whole thing. There I was, sounding like I was defending Coulter, when I don’t really care about her. I do like honesty and fair play. Everyone kept telling me she said this and that. If they didn’t like her, why would they have given her the time of day? Whatever. Sorry if I misunderstood you. You made a very fair comment.
