Peggy Noonan: The Single Word That Changed Human History

Peggy Noonan
I have to echo Mary Wells: the Virgin Mary, also known as the Blessed Mother, is the most influential and powerful woman in the world. A good portion of the 1.2 billion Catholics in the world talk to her regularly, or every day, or more, seeking help and advice. Protestants honor her singular place in history, and the Koran speaks of her with respect as well. She was a young Jewish girl when she changed human history. So you see she covers a lot of territory. She did this by saying one word: "Yes." She performs miracles. She consoles. She has come down to talk to little children; she once, in Fatima, made the sun dance to prove that she was present. She is understood as such a source of mercy that it’s a pious old joke to say that when you die, if St. Peter won’t let you in the gates you can go around the back and talk to Mary and she’ll try to get you in. But she’s very good at thwarting mischief; when old John Paul was shot, he felt certain she’d saved his life by redirecting a bullet away from his artery. She is the main source of strength to many people who happen to make the world work, who keep it running. Without her, nothing would work. She protects nations. You cannot love Mary and at the same time hold to disparaging assumptions as to the place and power of women, so she is a powerful teacher in that area, also. She is very brave but not warrior-like, very powerful but not forward or aggressive. She is, I guarantee you, a silent mainstay and great love of some of the Most Powerful Women named on this list. (Ask the U.S. Speaker of the House how she feels about her.) She is the Queen of Peace. We are lucky she is there.

I’m sorry. You have had terrible trials and tribulations in your life. I will speak to this “Virgin Mary” as you called Her. She is not physically available to me, but spiritually and that’s even better. I will not pray for your conversion, faith is a gift that only God can give, but I will speak to her about the things that her Son has allowed to happen in your life and pray that God grant you peace in your life with all that has happened and ever will happen.

I think you ALL will find this interesting………………………I did not write this i recieved this in an e-mail and pasted it here The American Friends Service Committee, Mennonite Central Committee, Quaker United Nations Office, Religions for Peace, and the World Council of Churches are hosting the event, to be held in New York on September 25. I find it disconcerting that religious leaders would give any credence or forum to a man who so boldly and violently rejects religious freedom and embraces terrorism - including the total destruction of Israel. We as a nation cannot be apathetic to Ahmadinejad’s outright hatred of the Jewish people. I trust you will stand with me and the American Center for Law and Justice right now by giving generously to help us send a solid message to President Ahmadinejad, the United Nations, and these misguided religious leaders: Religious bigotry will not be tolerated in any form, nor will we give voice to those who repeatedly - unabashedly - refuse basic human rights and freedom!_____________________________________email ends. WE soon will not have any choices and I find this to be very scary May God Bless and protect us all in the name of JESUS amen God protect us all!!

I believe in Cinderella, I read about her in a book so she must be real ! “dancing sun”, you’re kidding, right ? Then again, with the right mushrooms anything can appear real.

This is to everyone who has commented so far. I have different belief’s……..I respect other people’s belief’s. Religion like Politics seem to either bring out the best or the worst in all of us. I think if we can be respectful of one another we just might learn something about each other. We don’t have to embrace anothers belief but it doesn’t hurt us at all to listen and either add to the conversation or not. I hope I never get too old or think I’m too smart not to continue to learn.

I agree Dona. I wonder why when some one attempts to share something so personal as the spiritual, invariably another must “school” them. I just read the article for what it was, one woman’s bold move into the unknown by faith and how this touch moved and inspired other women does so even today. Take from this what you will or not. It is a great gift to be able to go anywhere and be at ease but an amazing gift to be able to go anywhere and be offended by nothing.

I think a lot of women have gotten into trouble by just saying “yes”.

I disagree with almost all of Peggy Noonans conservative beliefs. But I admire her for standing up for what she believes. Faith is very personal and Lipstick we will pray for you that you will get relief from your sadness.

Holy cow! I am pretty much your basic Papist wop. I’m not crazy about the current Holy Father but…he was chosen, so be it. And there’s much about the Roman Catholic Church that I disagree with BUT I love the Blessed Mother. Don’t know why. I would never be so arrogant as to contradict anyone’s feelings or opinions about religion. To me, religion and/or the beliefs of notions beyond us are very personal. I attended Catholic schools before Vatican II so was exposed to the reverance and majesty and mystery of believing in something otherwordly. It gets me through the day. I’m not radical or nutty about my faith. It’s blind faith for sure. But leave me and everyone else to their personal beliefs. We all deserve a place to run and hide for comfort, if that is what it takes. Shoving these beliefs into the lives of others, however, is where I draw the line. It’s not acceptable.

Ms. Bonita, I’ve missed your comments on wOw. Hope you are doing well. It is so pretty today in the mountains of Tennessee. Sunny and cool and the trees are just starting to turn colors. I’ve been wondering about finding another site to visit on the web where there are other things to “talk” about besides the election. Things have gotten so mean spirited that I have become disillusioned and don’t comment much anymore. Today, I’m just jotting down some random thoughts as I look out the window at the beautiful day. I should sign off the computer and go for a walk. I was just thinking about you the other day and thought I would try to connect with you for a few minutes. As another poster says “peace and grace”.

Dab: Imagine my surprise when I saw your comment in my mailbox! I am flattered and humbled that anyone even noticed I was “here”. Wow! Honestly, in some of the threads I just felt like I was talking to myself…even ‘though there were tons of women posting. It seemed I only got a repsonse when I either said something dumb (without basis) or pissed someone off because of what I said. So, I just threw in the towel and decided to give it a rest. It’s pretty here in South Carolina but so cold! A cold front descended on us yesterday and it’s been quite chilly. I happen to like it for a change and can hardly wait to put on my turtlenecks and corduroy jackets! I hope everyone in WoW land is fine as wine and excited about being able to finally exhale one week from today. :) BTW, thank you again ever so much. I’ve always believed that all people really want is to be encouraged, noticed, heard. Thanks Dab, thanks a ton!

I have missed your posts. I always thought you expressed yourself very well and I didn’t read anything dumb from you. Some do get pissed off easily and I wonder if it isn’t to just stir the pot and keep the thread going. I live in Chattanooga Tenn. and we are also experiencing the cold. Actually, I am staying in the house on the mountain and it is cold in the mornings when my husband goes to work. I curl up in bed with a book and a cup of coffee and am so glad I am not working anymore. Seriously, I hope you don’t find this forward, but if you are ever in our tourist town let me know when and I would love to meet at the art district where they have wonderful coffee with an outdoor, european setting and heaters on the deck of the outdoor restaurant for wonderful pasta. If it is too cold the sites can be seen from inside the restaurant at the art district. You have always written with such cheerfullness and seem to have some exciting stories to tell. My husband and I would love to meet you. I grew up in this town and was born only about 6 city blocks from the art district. This area of Tennessee is my home and I love to share it with others.

Together We Can Make A CHANGE! Ever have one of those days, it seems like all the people around you just want to knock you down… Or just get into some kind of insulting or name calling battles? Remember to try our best to show kindness Words can be said that are hurtful to others And what They say sometimes makes us shudder!! We need to remember They are people too! And We should Listen to their point of view and even tho they might not be true its just helps us get new attitudes! So, when People get you down… Remember to just keep going, We will be the ones doing all the Glowing! To all of my fellow OBAMA/BIDEN supporters Keep standing strong with a smile on your face!! november 4th we WILL Win this Race!!
