Pelosi in Rome: Stimulus' 'Buy American' Provision Not 'Protectionist' (Video)

The stimulus package has caused Nancy Pelosi a bit of headache during her trip to Rome. The legislation in question includes a "Buy American" provision, which has some international observers balking that we’ve become protectionist, a charge Pelosi denies.

"Somewhere in the mix of things, someone has decided that America has become, is becoming, more protectionist. I don’t think that is the case," Pelosi said at the Italian parliament, per Reuters.

The watered-down version of the "Buy American" provision in the stimulus bill would require public infrastructure projects to use U.S. steel and goods. That has made some U.S. trading partners pretty unhappy. Brazil says it may challenge the legality of the provision at the World Trade Organization. Meanwhile, China commerce ministry spokesman Yao Jian said Monday that Beijing was "deeply concerned" about protectionism, adding: "We think trade protectionist measures will escalate the already serious economic situation under the financial crisis."

But Pelosi stressed that while U.S. appreciates and needs global trade, the country also needs to protect its workers.

"We want them to be assured that we’re looking out for their interest as we look to grow the U.S. economy. I don’t think that’s protectionism. I think that’s what any country would do for its workers," she said. "President Obama is not a protectionist president."

Maybe the other world powers would feel better about this if they understood it’s practically impossible to buy American:-)

Isn’t that the truth. A lot of things are make a little in this country and a little in that country. Everything is shipped around to different county to be made. The last country get to put the famous words on, “Made in … . “.

I believe there are some aspects to protectionism at play with our new stimulus package and that is not (in my opinion) a necessarily negative thing. The “Buy American” provision as it is written specifically using the sample indicated in this article, the mandatory use of American made steel goods for infrastructure projects should be applauded. Very few American realize that as much as 80% of all we use in our day to day lives, from clothing, cars, paper goods, foods, toys, even medications are not manufactured in America. There’s a lot of blame to go around as to why that is fact. But the bottom line is as President Obama is making clear, those days must come to an end, and we must get back to the old slogan “Made in America: and have it mean something. Right now it’s hollow.

Soooo…when, in retaliation, these other countries no longer buy American steel goods for their projects, will that be okay? The reason alot of these products are not made in the U.S. is because unions cause the expense of producing them to skyrocket in comparison to having them manufactured outside the country. It’s common sense. Next thing you know, you’ll be demanding that all products sold in the U.S. should have to be American made.

If we think we can buy nothing but American, millions more will lose their jobs. Politicians are all about money, nothing else. How many individuals will become rich off this stupid bill?

Love seeing Nancy take some heat! She was in such a hurry to shove this bill down the throats of the people without the “tranparency and review” Obama promised so let her take some heat from the other countries she is so fond of saying that hate America.

S J…Maybe while she is there, she can find a country that likes and wants her and just stay there. We sure do not need her in this country period!!

Robert — I truly believe that Nancy REALLY wants to be Secretary of State! Maybe she pitched a fit “Well, Hilllary made a trip, why can’t I”. If she can’t find a country that likes and wants her, maybe she will make up a bill (with pork added) where they will HAVE to take her. If I were President Obama I would keep this woman on a short leash!

Lady Gator…. Short leash… I think a chocker would be better!!

Robert — well if it were a choker — it would have to be filled with diamonds or fur lined.  A Princess always demands the best from her subjects!

Nobama and Pelosi were in such a hurry, and as of right now, it still hasn’t been signed! But, there wasn’t enough time to read it? It had to be approved on Friday? They were afraid that the long weekend would provide more time for Americans to see what a lousy spending bill it is. Also, has anyone noticed how Wall Street has reacted to the news the bill was approved? We have a 6% loss in two business days. Yeah, there’s change and hope.

Well, if it’s only for infrastructure projects, I guess…. Whatever we need to do to re-invigorate our steel industry is a good thing. We can figure out how to play fair around the world at the same time, I’m sure.
