The Politically Incorrect Side of Julia Reed

Julia Reed
I have an American car, a black Cadillac STS, which I unapologetically love, and which did not cost nearly $40,000 — it cost $27,000. I got it used, from my favorite car dealer, Ed Kossman in Cleveland, MS, and his cousin Al delivered it to my door in New Orleans. I cannot imagine why anyone buys brand-new cars. Mine had been leased by someone who put very few miles on the thing, and when I bought it, it was less than two years old and in pristine condition. If it had been new, it would have cost more than $50,000. My father used to give me his old Caddies, which he also bought used, so this is the newest one I’ve ever owned. I love its smooth ride, its XM radio is my greatest joy and I dig that it’s sort of politically incorrect and not "cool" in the way that a BMW or a Mercedes is.

I would buy anything but an American car. I’m sick and tired of junk cars and the constant whining from General Motors about their inability to make fuel efficient cars. Toyoto has no problem in putting out fuel efficient cars, but if you ask General Motors to consider it, they act as if the sky will fall and we’ll all go back to riding mules and horse carts. The sooner GM goes under the better.

Yes, Caddies aren’t supposed to be cool, but…back in my 20s (when I still cared about being cool) I had to drive my husband’s company car for a few days. I grumbled, sneered and moaned about “having to drive that Caddy.” At the end of the week, he had to pry the keys out of my hand. Thanks for reinforcing my decision to buy used next time. Who knows? Maybe I’ll go check out those “uncool” Caddies.
