First Family Picks Portuguese Water Dog for White House

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Attention all Portuguese water dogs! Keep your ears up, tails wagging and heads up high, because the Obama girls are looking to adopt one of your kind. This means you, yes you, could be the next First Dog!

Please, hold your drool.

First Lady Michelle Obama tells People magazine that she wants a rescued Portuguese water dog who is "old enough" and a "match" for the family dynamic.

"Temperamentally they’re supposed to be pretty good," Obama says in the magazine’s latest issue, which hits newsstands on Friday. The breed is known to be highly intelligent, non-shedding and has many features similar to that of a poodle. Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy has two Portuguese water dogs of his own.

So, finally the dog search is nearing an end. Barack Obama promised his daughters, Sasha and Malia, a new puppy while on the campaign trail. The quest to find the Obama dog was a bit of a challenge though. The pooch had to be uniquely suited for Obama’s eldest daughter, Malia, who suffers from allergies.

And if the new dog eventually wants a furry friend, click here for more hypoallergenic options.

I call Pepe my road dog.  He’s always ready to hop into the back seat and ride :) Pepe is a Poochon.  He’s cream/white and has the most beautiful hazel eyes. He’s always right at my feet and I love him so much.

I have a Chocolate Lab and my girls is my best friend.  She goes everywhere with me in our dog house on wheels.  I even take her to work and she sleeps on the floor of my office.

I wish them luck finding a Portugese water dog at a shelter. It’s certainly a noble thing to get a dog from a shelter, but it’s not often you will find a purebred dog of any breed at a shelter. And since poodles and PWD’s look so much alike, I think if Malia’s allergy is the primary reason for getting this breed, they should skip the shelter idea. It would be even more unfortunate if they did get a dog from a shelter, and then had to get rid of it because of the allergy situation. I think they should go to a reputable breeder to make sure they get what they want.
