Powell Blasts Palin for Polarizing, Endangering Republican Party (Video)

Sarah Palin helped push the Republican Party farther to the right this election – a polarization which could lead to the downfall of the party, insists Colin Powell.

Oh, and he also says Republicans should stop listening to conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh and we need to rethink the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

“Gov. Palin, to some extent, pushed the party more to the right, and I think she had something of a polarizing effect when she talked about how small-town values are good,” Powell told CNN in an interview that will air Sunday. “Well, most of us don’t live in small towns. And I was raised in the South Bronx, and there’s nothing wrong with my value system from the South Bronx.”

He adds: “It was that attempt by the party to use polarization for political advantage that I think backfired.”

If the GOP doesn’t wake up and realize the far-right wing can’t carry the rest of the party, Powell – who created shockwaves throughout the political establishment when he endorsed Barack Obama for president, albeit, late in the game – thinks they could become obsolete.

“There’s nothing wrong with being conservative … but if the party wants to have a future in this country, it has to face some realities,” like it has to woo blacks and Hispanics, who are quickly becoming the majority in this country.

“I think the Republican Party needs to stop shouting at the world and the country … the party has to take a hard look at itself.”

Here’s video from the aforementioned interview.

that’s a Zero… not an Oh. Powell was the most notorious salesman for the war. I have zero respect for the man.

I agree with you, Alias. At one time I had high regards for him but watching him testify on TV for the war at the UN made my stomach turn. I have a strong sense of when someone is lying and he was. He was hunched over the table in front of him almost on his belly and telling people that the little vial of liquid he was holding was the reason our country had to go into Iraq.I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I almost brought my house down trying to get some mold out of my basement by mixing cleaning stuff under my kitchen counter. My husband grabbed me around the waist and hauled me out of the house then disposed of the mixture. By that time my lungs felt on fire. He is a chemist and educated me about mixing different chemicals. Remember how the Oklahoma bombing was committed? I think it was with fertilizer. Nothing really sophisticated. Just basic chemistry. Sorry, too long of a post but I really agree with you.

So much for Saddam’s savior. Democrats do democrat much better than RINOs. Put your ass where your heart has been, General. Osama can use a house boy.

Osama?” “Houseboy?” Merrell, YES!! The post is racist. I think we are all VERY aware of the implications. Unfortunately, the comments reflect (and support) the essence of Powell’s message, respective to the divisiveness and extremist conservative views, which were evident in Palin’s messages… especially of Palin polarizing and endangering the Republican Party.

You are spot on, Merrell. It should be pulled, if Duchess would be so kind. When Zawahiri used the term against Obama back in November, I remember it was explained that it meant “house negro” or ” house servent”. This is the original BBC article when it ran; you decide, and let me know what you think.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7737710.stm

Wow… way to go Colin Powell. I think that anyone who disagrees just needs to look at how the election played out.

Powell allowed the Republican Guard retreat from Kuwait intact when he stopped the assault on their retreat along the Highway of Death. That Guard put down the revolt against Saddam’s rule and kept him in power though the interim until Gulf II. As SecState Powell helped our enemies by apologizing for our successes. I am sorry that Dr. Rice had to wait so long to take the job, and that Bush did not let her do the job right.

There is nothing good to say about the mess in Iraq . Both the Gulf war and the current one were full blown deadly mistakes. Powell, I believe is an honest man. He was up against one of the most devious deceptive power managers perhaps in history. and I don’t mean GW. We forget that Powell was in the vanguard of the Civil Rights issues. He deserved to a leader and rise as high as he did in the service. But in that era there was a lot of “go along to get along behavior.” It was necessary as one of the steps along the way of Civil Rights. But Powell was human and taken in by the con artists of the W. administration. We all knew that Cheney represented the oil interests and Bush is a pushover by anyone with a few brains and smooth talk. In my life I have nursed many war veterans and it is the saddest work at times. People now forget about the ww2 vets and even worse the Korean vets. Somewhere along the way we Americans lost our way and followed the leaders almost without question. We have to get back to a truly shared democracy. Starting with our own problems with poverty and brutality and ignorance. Do not blame Powell as he is just part of the public caught up in the Romantic Savior Image of the USA. We need to save ourselves before we can help others.

Every word he said was dead on. He has said everything that I believe and feel as it relates to Palin and her role in polarizing our nation. It truly amazes me how many people are so entrenched in their political leanings that they can’t or won’t allow themselves to see that. Dismissing it as “liberal ramblings” never once being objective on the matter. She is loved by many, but the reasons for that admiration are steeped in issues of concern. She speaks to the ugly side of our beliefs, beliefs that are becoming more and more antiquated in the face of a changing nation. Her divisive language speaks to people who are stuck in the mindset they can hold onto an image of America that is very quickly changing. To not recognize these changes and learn to accept them and adapt, will surely leave those who support her beliefs alone with their bitterness and resentment. You can’t kill off every politician or official that doesn’t fit your image of who you want in office. Who moves in your neighborhood, works beside you or owns the stores you frequent will continue to change. You can relocate over and over again, but life and times in America will continue to change. And no amount of hate filled speech and divisive rhetoric from Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and others will change that. Either change or be left behind. Those are your choices, Period.
