Punxsutawney Phil Spots Shadow, Retreats

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Keeping with tradition, the nation turned its eye to Punxsutawney, PA, today to see whether Punxsutawney Phil, emerging from his underground home, would see his shadow and retreat, thus signaling six more weeks of winter. And indeed that’s what happened.

The annual holiday finds its origin in German folklore, in which a badger or a bear would predict the meteorological future. Immigrants brought it over to America, and the U.S. has been participating in Groundhog Day since the 18th century.

The nation took notice in 1887, thus catapulting Phil’s career as an international icon. Introspective and crippled by stage fright, Phil had no comment.

I am so ready for spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My daughter was born on Ground Hogs Day, and the joke was “hope she doesn’t see her shadow and go back in”….not a pleasant thought at all!!! Happy Ground Hogs day everyone!!!

Thanks, Libra. Aren’t groundhogs cute? It was nearly 60 degrees here yesterday and today close to the same. The trouble with where I live is that “spring” comes in and flirts with us in January, February and March and gets our hopes up. However, we have a beautiful spring here starting in April. I’m ready for my flip flops!

They may be cute, but they’re also fiesty (like Liz Smith I may add) as anyone!

deber: Aren’t groundhogs cute? Not if you’re trying to grow stringbeans, they’re not. But I forgive them… most of the time.

I’m enjoying the cooler weather. It won’t be long and I’ll be complaining that it’s to hot. Libra Lady and everyone Happy Ground Hogs day!

Always wondered if he would see his shadow without all of the TV cameras and lights. Poor Phil has a one day a year job.

Probably means we in CA still won’t get our much-needed rain…☹

Punxsutawney may have it’s Phil…I have my eye on our own Cloudy, the annual participant in the Groundhog Day celebration at Brookfield Zoo. We’re now officially on crocus and glory of the snow watch here in the midwest for the sure signs of spring…

I plant crocus right under my dryer vent for that earliest possible dash of purple and yellow! I hope the constant blanket of snow that has been insulating lawn and garden this winter produces a spectacular spring and summer display. Goundhog Day is in good fun, but New England winters always start early and end late - I look forward to ‘sock optional’ days. Stay warm, everyone!
