Potential Wonder Resveratrol = 1000 Bottles of Red Wine

We’ll use any excuse to drink red wine. Now, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotech company has come up with the best argument for red wine we’ve ever heard: Resveratrol, a substance found in the skin of red grapes, can not only slow down the aging process and prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, heart diseases and possibly cancer, it can even help your diet plan.

You’d have to drink the equivalent of 1,000 bottles of red wine to match the benefits of one pill, which is said to work by triggering the sirtuin longevity gene.

"Our goal is to prevent and forestall many of the diseases that strikes us as we reach 50, 60 and 70. All with one pill," Dr. Christoph Westphal told Morley Safer on "60 Minutes" last night.

He gave a pretty compelling demonstration of Resveratrol’s effectiveness — in mice, at least. Two mice ate a high-fat diet; one received Resveratrol and the other didn’t. After 12 weeks, the one who had taken the drug wasn’t as fat and could run farther.  And when they died, that same mouse had youthful, fat-free organs. (The New Yorker had some fun imagining this experiment.)

But will it work in humans? So far it’s been tested on diabetics and has lowered their glucose and insulin levels — with no diet or drug interventions. Next they’re going to try a more potent version on cancer patients. If all goes well, it’s estimated it should be available in the marketplace in as little as five years.

I saw that part of 60 Minutes. I take a product called Resveratrox made by a company called Garden Green I dont know if it works yet because I am not a Senior Citizen yet but some day I may be able to tell. I think they said that the drug from the show may take up to 5 years or so to be sold. Might want to try this it says it has all the items in it that the drug has/will have. I am not sure about the 1000 bottles though? If I let it age do you think it will get better with time???

Well, I just hope it works, and the research is replicated before being published in any of the scientific press, before being sent out to us. I can’t drink anything with alcohol in it (neuromuscular condition) or it stops me from breathing so it’s not wise for me to let my red vino breathe if I cannot. ;-)) I’m sure, however, that the U.S. Pharmacopoeia will get it’s hands on this and the “new pill” will run about $100.00 each, at least. Sigh. Can we not eat grapes? (As I understand Resveratrol, its from grapes only grown in France, but we have planes adn ships coming from France hourly). I am not keen on OTC products that affect hormones, or same in fact, since 1 mg. of melatonin sent me over the edge and took me 28 hours to level out. Sheesh - scaring the liver out of me, we have to be very careful. In the past, a one a day vitamin, without my knowledge as to the source of my miseries from the time I took it for the next 6 hours (for 3 years) was the culprit with it’s additives (coating, fillers, etc.??). Hugs and be careful, please. Best to scarf tons of fresh veggies, and fresh fruits, grains, beans, lentils, daily. There is no one wonder, count on that! Again, this is marketing.

I thought it was already in the market! I have seen it at the vitamin store and even at Costco. Are they using the same word to describe two different things? Maybe the research is intended to get a pharmaceutical grade of it, but it is already out there, I think.

It is on the market and it has been for a long time. You can get it from the skins or the seeds or the vine of the grape, as well as from lilies and eucalyptus, but it seems the dark grape skin is the most potent. I take grape seed extract, which is the same thing. I think these guys are making an more absorbable and pharmaceutical form. Alpha Lipoic Acid, which is also great for the skin, balances blood sugar as well as good old cinnamon. There is much out there, but these guys are testing it for actual results. Interesting to see what the answers are they will confirm.

saw this last night… I’d do their trials in a New York Second! BTW: 1 pill = 1k bottles of red wine… a bit too much even for me. BTW #2: paleeeze stop taking unregulated products “manufactured” by so-called heath food/drug companies. They’re at best just taking your money for nothing, at worst causing you long-term damage.

agreed—-however, No One may match the danger-ratio of ‘Big-Pharma’—-second only to ‘Big-Oil’ in revenue—-this titanic industry routinely conducts their ‘drug-studies’ in a fashion conducive to their fiscal interest, with No regard to ‘real-life’ studies as those, usually ‘after-the-fact’ performed by Independent Medical Universities—-a typical example? the neuroleptic (major tranquilizer) Zyprexa- or the Vioxx fiasco. University studies often show wide discrepancies vs. ‘drug-co.’ same—- it has long been known this has been, and continues a major health concern. such unethical ‘skewing’ of test results to fiscally-driven, vs. ethical drug co. procedures and ‘claimed’ results remains very problematic—-i suggest one search Dr. Peter Breggin—-also of note: the former head of the APA resigned, stating that ‘Big Pharma’ had essentially destroyed his profession (shrinkdom), and while both of these ‘non-links’ relate to ‘mental-health’, the same unethical drug co. methods extend throughout most areas of medicine, hence Vioxx, etc. ‘supplements’ and their marketing Do present ethical issues—-‘snake-oil’ has a long history—-as long as the old term ‘pill-pushers’, which refers to MD.s—-both deserve redress—-

So that explains why we don’t hear much about Alzheimers, diabetes, etc, in Italy and France, and that the people live to ripe old ages of 100. The answer’s in the grapes! I’m all for preventing these diseases, but a pill may take all the fun out of using the grape in it’s natural state.

I’d rather have the 1000 bottles of red wine.

I was reading an article about this in a UCLA news letter on aging. It was suggested to eat grapes with dark skins - the darker the better. It will give you the same effect.
