Rock Band Heart Asks Palin to Stop Using 'Barracuda' Song

Singers Ann and Nancy Wilson of the rock band Heart have called in lawyers after John McCain’s vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin used their 1977 hit "Barracuda" at a Republican Party rally.

Heart is just the latest band to ask McCain and/or the GOP to stop using their music at political events.

Palin, who used the track for her appearance at the Republican National Convention in St Paul, MN, on September 3, was nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda" while playing basketball in high school.

"Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart have informed the McCain/Palin Campaign that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to not use one of Heart’s classic songs, ‘Barracuda,’ as the congratulatory theme for Sarah Palin," the Wilsons say in a statement on their website. "The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission.

"We have asked the Republican campaign not to use our music."

Nancy Wilson told Entertainment Weekly: "I think it’s completely unfair to be so misrepresented.

"I feel completely f—-ed over."

Both Wilsons then e-mailed a statement to Entertainment Weekly, again asking that "Barracuda" not be used to promote Palin’s image.

"Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women," the sisters wrote. "The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late ’70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there’s irony in Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there."

BBC reports that the GOP says it obtained the necessary license to play the song.

"The McCain campaign respects intellectual property rights," spokesman Brian Rogers told Reuters. "Accordingly, prior to using ‘Barracuda’ at any events, we paid for and obtained all necessary licenses."

One of "Barracuda’s" cowriters, former Heart guitarist Roger Fisher, told Reuters he was "thrilled" with the "ingenious placement of a kick-ass song," BBC reports. But he later said he supported the Democratic ticket and would be donating some of the royalties to Sen. Barack Obama’s, D-IL, campaign.

OK I must have been mistaken—I thought someone said they had…..I don’t think they have to ask the artists if they followed the copyright rules though.Sorry I missed that info…..

Did Bill Clinton pay for the rights to “Don’t Stop” for his campaign? I doubt it.

Fleetwood Mac made a live appeance at Bill Clinton’s inaugural. I know I spelled that wrong but…bottom line, who cares? Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were just nationalized and this is now what we’re going to get our knickers in a knot over. Pathetic.

Yes, and Palin was backwards in her knowledge on that one too.

Ann and Nancy Wilson were our part-time on the Oregon Coast. I can say with relative certainty that they would not have lent their song to Sarah Palin, regardless of their shared love for the Pacific Northwest. Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG may own the rights, but even Sarah Palin may be well advised to think twice before crossing the Wilson sisters, based on what I have seen.

Wow really? I LOVE Heart and this story is so funny because it’s so ironic Sister Kitty. What me and many others have clearly detected in the Reps in an amazing twisting, turning, revamping and restaging of an image done on the fly. They aren’t thinking things through before bringing them forth as representing the party ideas. Because of those quick time decisions, strange ironies are formed. It’s funny.

Did Bill Clinton pay for the rights to “Don’t Stop” for his campaign? I doubt it.” By Shellie G on 09/08/2008 5:30 pm He didn’t have to. Fleetwood Mac were supporters of his campaign. What these artists are objecting to is having people mistakingly think the use of their songs means they support the policies of the candidates who use them. Regardless of whether copyright laws have been honored the music of artists should not be used to misrepresent the meaning and intent of the music or by association the artist.

Why oh why do people put so much stock in what the hollywood elite have to say about this country. after all the bulk of this elite are drug addicted, and if not that I would like to see a statistic for what the divorce rate for actors and musicians, before I personally take stock in anything they have to say about Palin’s family values………If you vote based on anything Micheal Moore, Bill Mahr, or David Letterman say do this county a favor and stay away from the polls in November….Please!!!!!!!

Hi John, I, for one, am most interested in the source of information on which you base the statement that the “bulk of.. (H)ollywood elite…are drug addicted.” I will then provide you with many credible sources that show the overall US divorce statistic being 50% - likely representative of that for “actors and musicians” - as well as the rest of us. You need not have said “please.” It was my pleasure. I await your response.

Kitty , You are funny and I can tell that you are loving the fact that you have a male here to argue with. It seems no matter what I say you are going to try to slam me or pick apart my typo’s and the miss use of the lower case h’s when spelling, however I am a musician although not famous it is something that I know about. Music is supposed to be made for the people not ones self haven’t you Kitty O’Keefe ever had a song that fit a time in your life and you thought of it as kind of a theme song, with that being said how would have you felt if when you played it for friends you were told that it was stealing ( it made you feel good, it pumped you up for the big game), now the artist that you are a huge fan of says because I don’t like you although I dont know you and you payed for my album you have to pay me again….and by the way the divorce rate is climbing read the census every once in a while..

FYI: Ann and Nancy Wilson are from Seattle Washington. The band “HEART” broke onto the scene from Vancouver, Canada -where they lived in the 70’s. Nancy Wilson has been married to writer/director Cameron Crowe for 22 years. Ann Wilson made the choice to be a single parent and is the adopted mother of two children (Children somebody else didn’t want). This hardly qualifies the Wilson sisters as running with the “drug addicted elite.” The sisters have NOT said they don’t like Palin. They stated that her beliefs are NOT their beliefs and they don’t want their music linked to those beliefs. They are not judging her as a person - they are saying “NOT OUR POLITICS - DON’T USE OUR MUSIC TO PROMOTE IT.”

John - As involved in the political process as you seem to be, how can you even think of telling people to stay home in November? It is not just an American right - it is an American duty to one’s country to vote. To stay home would be disrespectful to the thousands that have died for our right to vote. Suggesting that someone should stay home in November seems very UnAmerican to me. I think I would rethink my comments if I were you.

I seems that you all are not READING my statements, It is a miss-use of an American Duty to cast a miss-informed, or un-informed vote, I dont personally care who you are going to vote for all I ask is that you do not make your choice based on a comment made by a celebrity, since when did being a talk show host or a movie star automatically make you a political genius.. Therefore I think that you should re-read my comment, and take it for what it really is….just know why your voting for who you are voting for….
