Rupert Murdoch's Daughter Gives Up News Corp Board Seat

Not all of media baron Rupert Murdoch’s kids want a piece of the family business.

Elisabeth Murdoch turned down a spot on dad’s News Corporation board, Fortune reports. She was simply an "observer" at today’s board meeting — the first since President Peter Chernin announced that he was leaving. "Liz" rejection further adds fuel to the debate over who will take the company’s reins once the elder Murdoch steps aside.

It’s no secret ole Rupert wants control kept in the family; he has four adult children who could easily take over. Other than Liz, there’s Lachlan, 37, James, 36, and Prue, an elder daughter he had with his first wife — and whom Vanity Fair’s Michael Wolff recently characterized as the "official Murdoch family wing nut." Prue isn’t involved in the business, but her husband is a ranking company executive. Murdoch also has two very young daughters with current wife Wendi Deng. It’s believed that James, who runs the European and Asian arms of the businesses from London, will most likely be the successor, in spite of his critics.

Liz — now married to Matthew Freud, great grandson of Sigmund Freud — has had a rocky relationship with her father. She left Australia’s News Corp branch not long after she married her former hubby in 1993, but eventually became an executive at News Corp satellite TV provider BSkyB. But, after some disputes with other management, she left in 2000, forming Shine a year later.

Vanity Fair chronicles how she was a "harridan of a manager — ripping through the staff, sacking many old stalwarts and slashing operating costs" during one of her early ventures. Dad also reportedly wasn’t very approving of the way she went about her marriage and her child-bearing schedule. That said, her reluctance to return to the fold shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. This doesn’t mean Liz will never return to the company. She told The New York Times last year that she could, but doesn’t have a timetable: "I don’t know how it would happen one day, but it’s certainly not out of the cards.”

If she does come back, don’t expect her to do it quietly. In 2007, Liz was named the world’s most "powerful blonde" by Tatler magazine, beating Prince Harry’s girlfriend Chelsy Davy, along with women like Camilla Parker Bowles and Sienna Miller.

…she was a "harridan of a manager — ripping through the staff, sacking many old stalwarts…

Like the plague, it appears as if she’s run her course.

She sounds like a truly independent minded type of woman, good for her. Much better to be this way than the spoiled type that expects someone else to pay her way through life. And given Murdoch is worth millions, she could have easily chosen that path.

Sounded to me like she might be a spoiled brat, demanding her own way.  Money can create that kind of luxury in those predisposed to narcissm.

Just another view.

Peace and grace

But more probable is that Murdoch rejected the Board when our Liz Smith left the ‘Post’……..in which case, she is a woman of discernment.

"Dad also reportedly wasn’t very approving of the way she went about her marriage and her child-bearing schedule."

It does sound like he wants to control his children at any age.  She on the other hand sound like she wants to be in control of her own life.  Who wouldn’t?

It can’t be easy being one of the Murdoch tribe. Liz has figured out  how to do things her way and seems comfortable with her own style, even when her father isn’t. I don’t think it gets any better than that.

Not easy???…..I doubt if she wonders where her next meal will be from.  At least he makes her work for her role in the family business…not like Paris Hilton!

Paris Hilton works she just makes it look like fun.  Her parents are republican and I am sure they instilled a work ethic.

Unlike some I do not define a person’s character purely by their poilitcal party….or their parents!  But by their OWN actions!

My parents were and still are today staunch Democrats…and they too taught work ethic and values.

I don’t know but I hated it when Murdock purchased the Wall Street Journal it was a decent newspaper.  I don’t like the idea of someone owning so many meida outlets.

Do you HATE him personally or just because he seems to know how to make a profit?

"In recent years, Australian-born billionaire Rupert Murdoch has used the U.S. government’s increasingly lax media regulations to consolidate his hold over the media and wider political debate in America. Consider Murdoch’s empire: According to Businessweek, "his satellites deliver TV programs in five continents, all but dominating Britain, Italy, and wide swaths of Asia and the Middle East. He publishes 175 newspapers, including the New York Post and The Times of London. In the U.S., he owns the Twentieth Century Fox Studio, Fox Network, and 35 TV stations that reach more than 40% of the country…His cable channels include fast-growing Fox News, and 19 regional sports channels. In all, as many as one in five American homes at any given time will be tuned into a show News Corp. either produced or delivered." But who is the real Rupert Murdoch? As this report shows, he is a far-right partisan who has used his empire explicitly to pull American political debate to the right. He is also an enabler of the oppressive tactics employed by dictatorial regimes, and a man who admits to having hidden money in tax havens. In short, there more to Rupert Murdoch than meets the eye."

Rupurt Murdoch is hardly a ‘self-made’ man…He inherited a fledgling media empire, as well as a personal fortune, from his father, Sir Keith Murdoch. So (before you try to weild any class coscious "I’m-a-capitalist-and -you’re-not snobbery my way) I will say that "YES, it’s PERSONAL!" I don’t have a problem with the profit he makes, it is the shady and questionable business practices he employs. I will leave you with the words of Lord Acton (as this quote is a perfect fit where Mr. Murdoch is concerned):"Power corrupts, and absolutel power corrupts absolutely. Great men are most often bad men."
