Salma Hayek Breastfeeds Starving Sierra Leone Baby (Video)

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Salma Hayek in Sierra Leone

During a recent trip for UNICEF to Sierra Leone, actress Salma Hayek gave quite the gift to a starving child — her own breast milk. "Dateline" cameras and reporter Cynthia McFadden, also a wowOwow contributor, were on the scene.

"Am I being disloyal to my child while giving her milk away?" wondered Hayek, who gave birth to daughter Valentina in September, 2007. She concluded that her own daughter would understand. Sierra Leone has the highest rate of infant mortality of any nation. Click here for more photos of Salma Hayek in Sierra Leone. Watch Hayek breastfeed a hungry, ill baby:

I think that is so awesome for her to do. I always thought and still do that she is absolutely gorgeous. Now I can see she is beautiful on the inside too.

A simple natural instinctive response to the situation - Selma did her very best for that baby.

Okay. An army of lactating women could save the world. Why didn’t we think of this sooner. God Bless You, Ms. Hayek! Let’s get this organized!

ABC News covered this too - why on earth would “wet nursing” bring about national attention? What women do with the most utilitarian parts of their bodies is no ones business, least of all wet nursing, which is among the top 3 longest successful “trials” in the herstory of humans, the other two being birth, and breastfeeding. Such has saved 1000s of lives. In the late 1970s, a Dallas pediatric researcher came out with a paper that decried the practice, of course we were operating the region’s first “milk bank” with the help of the ARC, to save neonates lives, via women contributing their mammary nourishment to sick newborns - bothered the guy! He state that such would make those babies bodies reject a blood transfusion later if life if needed. What he didn’t realize, we hoped, was that he was using the most highly inbred stain of rats for his research - which would reject their own cells! Moreover, he had not a whit of awareness that we needed to get the babies stabilized, first, then worry about a blood transfusion later in life. Sheesh. He went on the Cleveland, thank goodness. Very interesting that this coverage even occurs, and equally, that the public feeds into it (no pun intended). If it wasn’t for breastfeeding, we would not be here. And, yet, women have saved the world, and yes, men can lactate, too - many a missionary did to save an infant when the mother died, until civilization could be reached, perhaps longer (?). You are all correct - kudos to a real human being.

Kudos to Selma who has gone outside the box of what many think is improper. Breastfeeding is one of the most natural and rewarding experiences that God gave to women. I do believe they need to take a look at the men that superstitiously think that they cannot have intercourse with their wives while they are lactating and want them to stop breasfeeding their infants….I have a problem with any father that would put his carnal desires over whether or not his child went hungry. Perhaps wet nurses need to be brought back into service as was common in the colonial days. Is that a step back, no it is getting back to what God intended..not some beauracrat stating what is and is not proper…Selma, you have a fan in me for life…
