Sarah Palin and Princess Diana - Distant Cousins

Barack Obama and Dick Cheney (and Brad Pitt) are not the only people who have odd common ancestry.

John McCain’s vice-presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, is linked in her family tree to former U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and the much-beloved Princess Diana.

According to genealogists at Ancestry.com, Roosevelt, the Depression-era Democratic president, is Palin’s ninth cousin once removed. Their common ancestor is Puritan Presbyterian Rev. John Lothrop, who came from England to Massachusetts in 1634.

The website also says the Alaska governor is a tenth cousin of the late British royal, Princess Diana.

Palin and Diana descended from John Strong and his wife Abigail Ford. Strong was born around 1605 in England and emigrated to the United States, where he died in Massachusetts in 1699, Ancestry.com said.

Cheney’s wife, Lynne, last year uncovered ancestral ties – eighth or ninth cousins once removed, depending on who you talk to - between her husband and Obama while researching her book.

Obama, the Democratic presidential hopeful and Illinois senator, is also a ninth cousin of actor Brad Pitt. Ancestry.com says: "Obama and Pitt are ninth cousins, sharing an eighth great–grandfather named Edwin Hickman. Hickman owned land in Virginia that was eventually purchased by Thomas Jefferson and incorporated into Monticello."

"When you’ve got candidates who have deep roots in America, there’s a good chance that they’re going to have some famous cousins," Ancestry.com’s chief family historian, Megan Smolenyak, told Reuters. "We’ve all got literally millions of cousins. The trick is finding that one little connection that results in something like Sarah Palin being related to FDR or Diana.”

Oh pleaaassse! The front page of the Washington Post today has an article, “Campaign 2008-PR Consultant Helped Palin Grab Spotlight” by Kimberly Kindy. She writes about how Mrs. Palin “invented” herself with an outside $31,000 public relations contract, as well as highlights what a light work schedule she had. In my opinion, it’s how she got noticed by the RNC and the McCain campaign. Which “my friends” reminds me of one of the movies in the “Omen” series that starred a little girl that wanted to grow up be President and take over the world. Remember “Damien”. Sarah still scares the “bee jeebers” , “Bye Gotcha” out me! Talk about self promotion in the very worst way. No matter what happens on Nov 4, Mrs. Palin will now be the equivalent of “Rush Limbaugh”. She’s going to make a lot of money at the publics dupping and expense either on the Radio, TV talk show or ?. Sarah Palin is no Princess Dianna by any s-t-r-e-a-t-c-h of the imagination.

Oh! Me, too, Mary Lou … I saw Canada all the time, and I went there, and we were on the same dateline, too, so I wasn’t looking into the future, or at Russia. I was real, I saw it, and I knew it - but, I didn’t know any Joe 6 Packs or hockey moms - I did know some hockey wives, though. Capt. John Smith and Oliver Hazard Perry are my kin, too - but that doesn’t mean I can sail, or navigate. I often got lost in the tunnel’s inspection offices in Windsor. Oh, my… I’m feeling like Palin must be IRL.

Good one Mary. Me thinks The late great Princess Diana would roll over in her mausoleum.

Well I bet Diana is very embarrassed by her cousin

Love it. Love it. Love it! The original article also stated that Governor Palin is distantly related to Franklin Roosevelt. Well, I guess that is a nice answer for all the naysayers who had such crude remarks to make about her. Love it!

I’m sure there are many people who are distantly related to Roosevelt and Princess Diana and others. I don’t think it matters that much since each of us is an individual. We each have to stand on our own merits. (Though, frankly, I would love to be related to Whoopi Goldberg.)

You know what Joe, you don’t get it….and the sad part is you never will. People like you flock to McCain Palin rallies and you do the rah-rah about Country First, you condemn Democrats as being socialists, liberals, abortion loving radicals. You cling to your political party, which it is obvious is the Republican Party and can’t and won’t be honest with yourself. You can’t bring yourself to admit that 8 years ago and then 4 years ago all of the song and dance that McCain is giving us as it relates to what he will do for the middle class, was not done. We are worse off now than ever before. You’ve spoken PERSONALLY to Barack Obama, a privilege not many of us have been granted, you have a personal reference point to judge him from and you STILL insist McCain would be better to lead out country? You really want to live another 4 years as we have the last 8? I have nothing but pity for people who think like you do and I pray that on November 4th Americans of every race, ethnicity and religion will remind themselves of the last 8 years, the manner in which McCain has run his campaign, the woman he chose to be VP and represent the U.S. on a world wide stage….and choose to do the right thing for that country they say they love so much. But instead choose to sacrifice all for the sake of keeping “someone who’s not like us” out of the White House.
