Monica Crowley: Somewhere, Hillary Is Smiling

By Monica Crowley

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Somewhere, Hillary Clinton is smiling.

She’s smiling because John McCain had the cojones to do what Barack Obama did not: put a woman on his ticket.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is now running with McCain as his choice to be vice president. She is a tax-cutting, pro-drilling, environmentalist, gun-defending, pro-life mom of five, with a son in the Army about to be deployed to Iraq.

You want "change?" Here it is. Obama said last night that change doesn’t come "from Washington, it comes TO Washington." How odd, then, that both Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden, are quintessentially Washington creatures.

Governor Palin, from Alaska, is about as far removed from Washington as you can be without living in Russia, just a hop away from her state.

She hunts, shoots, has a lifetime membership in the NRA, ice fishes, is Christian and pro-life.

A few months ago, Obama put down people like her, saying they "cling to their guns and their religion."

Something tells me Governor Palin is going to be a rock star in the states that really matter — Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan. They like their guns and religion, too.

In high school, Palin played basketball so fiercely that she earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda." She also played in the championship game with a stress fracture in her ankle, nailing a free throw in the critical final seconds.

She’s a cool chick and a tough cookie. I say again: somewhere Hillary smiles.

Diana and Joan, Thank you so much for that last exchange. You are my favorite posters, intelligent voices of reason that are “right on” with every post. I wish I could write with such clarity, but I can’t, so I will leave the heavy lifting to you. Today has been such a roller coaster….. part of me resents being “played” by John McCain, does he really think we are that stupid, is he really so machiavellian that he thinks he can get away with this. Of course we will see through this ! He has just doomed his chances. BUT…. on the other side, will this be enough to energize his “base” and bring out all the anti-abortion forces, could he possibly win? Are women really that stupid ? I can’t even entertain the thought of what a McCain presidency will mean, with this simple woman a heartbeat away. It just can’t happen !!

Diana, but weren’t all those people already voting for McCain? I think Palin will turn off most Independents who are not right wing fundamentalists, and those people were voting McCain anyway. The only thing she may do is get more of them to show up at the polls but I don’t know that it will make a big difference. This is not 2004 and even the evangelicals are getting tired of being used and manipulated by the GOP.

You’re right, very good point. It will, once again, come down to the swing states. I think now Pennsylvania and Colorado are Obama’s. I wonder if the black vote in the deep south may be enough to swing one of those. The only difference is that a pro-choice pick might have keep them home ( Ridge, Leiberman) , but not any more.

Yes, but a pro-choice pick like Lieberman would have won over a lot of Independents.

Go figure, I have the indistinct honor of having him as my Senator ( I want to grab that Sharpei pace of his by the jowls and just slap him silly… but don’t get me started) You’re right, only Independents and Republicans voted for him last time. Interesting thing about him, pro-lifers don’t like him, but “Rapture” people do, and they are usually the same people. I’m just so confused today ! Bill Maher is starting his new season right now, I must go watch, I need this !

I don’t have cable so I have to wait a couple days until it’s posted on youtube. What a great night for Maher to start his season! Lieberman is YOUR senator? Does everyone feel duped by him there? I even can’t stand the sound of his voice. The Rapture people like him because they think he is going to spark the big end of times war in the Middle East and then … well you know the rest.

I’m back… it was great. His comments about Ms Palin were priceless, as expected. OH yes, Lieberman is ours. He lost the democratic primary and we were hoping he would go away, isn’t that what you are supposed to do when you lose ?, but, OH NO, not Joe, he ran as an Independent and won by taking Republican votes from a terrible Repub. candidate. We were hoping McCain would choose him because it would’ve killed two birds….. He would make Mccain loose, and HE would be gone. Unfortunately, we have to put up with him for 4 more years. We have one last hope, that he will fun for Prime Minister of Israel.

De B Republicans would have wanted a republican, not an independent democrat. They are just funny that way. I know some people that thought Hagel would be great with Obama, and he was a republican. Wouldn’t work. As you do, I also live amongst them.

Many Republicans have switched over because of the direction the party is going. Any who were not quite sure, and held out some hope that McCain would bring the party back away from the control by the extreme religious right I am sure now realizes there isn’t a hope in hell of that happening. Most of the people I know who voted Republican their whole lives have switched to the Democrats because of Bush, now I’m sure this Palin choice has convinced many others that the Republican Party of today has little resemblance to the Republican Party they grew up with.

Speaking of, I chatted with my mother-in-law in Lancaster, PA (a city overwhelmingly GOP), and she told me that, this morning she saw 10 Obama lawn signs and 4 Obama bumper stickers on the way to the market. She’s astonished (and happy) to learn that she’s not the only Dem-supporter in the neighborhood. I think that VP pick might have shook some people loose.

I heard Obama got a bump in the polls as soon as Palin was announced. I know he got a lot of money too because the first thing I did was go to his website and make a donation so I am sure many of his supporters did the same.

Excuse me? The Evangelicals are the GOP. More of them are admitting that there are more issues involved than abortion and gay marriage, but I have never had the impression that they feel that they are being used by the GOP. Au contraire…they are the GOP branch that has been calling the shots, more or less since ‘94 after Gingrich’s Contract on America. They love this! Especially, after the news has reported how she wants to get Creationism taught in the schools and to end roe v wade.

Get creationism taught in the schools and end roe v wade… this after 8 years of the anti-science president. This is really depressing. OR, this is great because she is too extreme for most voters. In the past the fundies got out the vote for the GOP but Obama has his own group of enthusiastic voters that Gore and Kerry did not have. The young vote. My son and his friends flew to Denver just to be there for Obama’s speech. That stadium was mostly filled with young people and the newly registered record numbers are the young people. It’s not the same as it was in 2000 or even 2004.
