Monica Crowley: Somewhere, Hillary Is Smiling

By Monica Crowley

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Somewhere, Hillary Clinton is smiling.

She’s smiling because John McCain had the cojones to do what Barack Obama did not: put a woman on his ticket.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is now running with McCain as his choice to be vice president. She is a tax-cutting, pro-drilling, environmentalist, gun-defending, pro-life mom of five, with a son in the Army about to be deployed to Iraq.

You want "change?" Here it is. Obama said last night that change doesn’t come "from Washington, it comes TO Washington." How odd, then, that both Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden, are quintessentially Washington creatures.

Governor Palin, from Alaska, is about as far removed from Washington as you can be without living in Russia, just a hop away from her state.

She hunts, shoots, has a lifetime membership in the NRA, ice fishes, is Christian and pro-life.

A few months ago, Obama put down people like her, saying they "cling to their guns and their religion."

Something tells me Governor Palin is going to be a rock star in the states that really matter — Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan. They like their guns and religion, too.

In high school, Palin played basketball so fiercely that she earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda." She also played in the championship game with a stress fracture in her ankle, nailing a free throw in the critical final seconds.

She’s a cool chick and a tough cookie. I say again: somewhere Hillary smiles.

Everybody has baggage. So does Palin. But really ask yourself, if one of these 2 VPs had to end up leading this country, which would you want it to be?

No Way-No How -No McCain
I think characterizing a position one heartbeat away from the powerful position in the world with such supercillious ideas and words is despicable to say the least. We are talking people’s lives, the environment, the economy….we are also talking about the so called judgement of McCain and if he is or is not acting in the best interest of the US and the world. He is not. Here’s what Senator Boxer said today: “”The Vice President is a heartbeat away from becoming President, so to choose someone with not one hour’s worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice. “If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken. “The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart. “Senator McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a women on his ticket, such as Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison or Senator Olympia Snowe - they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice. “In addition, Sarah Palin is under investigation by the Alaska state legislature which makes this more incomprehensible.”

As I mentioned elsewhere, Sen. Hitchison said not only was she not considered, she wasn’t even asked for her advice (see her website). Sen. Snowe is completely silent on the issue (see her website). But you see, they would have things to say and opinions about stuff, and John-boy wouldn’t like that. Doesn’t want just some ole “c___”, but a young woman with a nice ass would be okay.

Joan, I don’t think it’s important whether we think Palin is a cool chick, etc. What’s important is that she’s running for VP and has the approval of the GOP base and Evangelical money will start pouring in. Instead of being superior to her appearance, etc or credentials. she has 53% countrywide approval at this time. I am a life long Democrat who will vote for Obama, but Hillary was my choice. Don’t underestimate the significance of this selection, as many factors are in play. Palin stands for everything I’m against, but she appeals to a large segment of GOP and possibly other voters. And I don’t mean Hillary voters. Democrats have to start being very specific about the differences, and Obama has to do better at doing this. It’s his job to close the deal and being derisive about Palin is a loser. GOP issues need to be closely examined and refuted by stating what we will do and how we’ll do it. Attacks are needed on policy not on personality. Criticising Palin’s qualities as a mother and her judgement regarding her kids is a BIG loser.

Well, Joan, she is married to the “First Dude” of Alaska, as he calls himself. LOL.

Great response Joan, I have little respect for the Monica Crowley’s and Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s and other TV personalities with little credibility, attempting to speak for women when they can do little more than spew the corporate mantras given to them.

Tee Zee: My thoughts exactly. The fact that Monica with the hair says McCain has balls to pick Palin–a WOMAN–-as his running mate is pure garbage. I don’t watch the view, but have seen snippets of it on Huff Post and Hasselbeck makes me crazy. I find myself wanting–––––and mind you, this is only a three minute segment usually––––to reach into this screen and put a muzzle on her mouth.

Pyhllis, (Loved your posts today by the way) The best thing about the View, now that Whoopie has joined, is the LOOKS that she gives Elizabeth, the rolling of the eyes, and, you will love this, she actually does put a muzzle on her. She does not suffer fools gladly ! I work from a studio at home so it is great diversion at 11 am.

I am a strong Hillary supporter and seriously objected to the manner the MSM and Camp Obama treated Clinton. The rampant sexism was not encouraging in a spew of Hope and Change. However, I will vote as a Democrat in November as I will vote the issues for this crucial moment . But dissing Palin is a BIG mistake. Whether Rovian genius, or McCain preference, it is an inspired pick for several reasons. For openers, did you think McCain had any choice as to selecting a hugely conservative candidate? He needs the Conservative Base, and he needs Dobson’s Evangelical big bucks. McCain needs money, and he sucked the air out of the Dem convention with a female selection. Criticising Palin’s glasses or hair, or lack of experience? [careful here], is a loser. She makes the voters he needs happy and they will now come up with the money he needs. Palin’s views are no different than any other acceptable GOP pick would have been. Currently Palin countrywide has 53% approval, and Biden…47%. If you were listening, Palin did NOT diss Hillary or Ferraro but complimented them. While I would never have voted for McCain no matter who his VP choice was, this was a smart GOP move. Underestimating Palin can be a serious mistake for us Dems. Both she and McCain represent issues that must be attacked rather than their personalities. Obama MUST start being very specific about exactly how he differs, and just WHAT he proposes doing. Putting Palin down won’t work. It’s the issues that must be differentiated and directed to those who still doubt.

Let’s see, issues. Anti-abortion, anti-polar bear, pro-NRA, pro-offshore drilling, doesn’t see a problem with asking public officials to fire people for personal reasons, doesn’t have a problem with having 5 children (one disabled) and leaving them for someone else to raise, no national experience whatsoever, little state experience (2 years) …. Do we need more issues here? Doesn’t believe in intelligent design (requires intelligence to understand and accept evolution)…. Shall I go on? I’m not “putting Palin down,” I’m just stating her positions…..

Thank you Tee Zee….I have little respect for dummies, panderers, and corporate lackeys…unfortunately plenty of that going around.

Yep, she cut taxes by raising the sales tax. Gotta love a tax cut that either cuts services, jobs or increases the sales tax. However, Monica, I do agree she is a Conservative’s dream.

Carol Clinton cut taxes and raised them on small businesses, and vice versa on others.

Monica — Thank you for a positive article. I agree “Somewhere Hillary is smiling”. I also agree with you on the statement “bringing change TO Washington”. I was shocked by Obama’s choice of Senator Biden. More far fetched than Sarah Balin. However, it was a nice ‘safe’ choice for him. So much for his vision of “change”. Maybe, after all, it is just “words”. Your remarks are so refreshing. Nice to have positive remarks for a change. We don’t see much of that on this site. I think there are also some who have missed the fact that Senator McCain didn’t just pick her because she is a woman. He covered all the bases. He covered the suggestions of the Republican base. That will be more important to most than the lone fact that she is a “woman”. I certainly look forward to seeing how much she can continue to make “Hillary smile”. Thanks again for the positive article.
