Monica Crowley: Somewhere, Hillary Is Smiling

By Monica Crowley

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Somewhere, Hillary Clinton is smiling.

She’s smiling because John McCain had the cojones to do what Barack Obama did not: put a woman on his ticket.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is now running with McCain as his choice to be vice president. She is a tax-cutting, pro-drilling, environmentalist, gun-defending, pro-life mom of five, with a son in the Army about to be deployed to Iraq.

You want "change?" Here it is. Obama said last night that change doesn’t come "from Washington, it comes TO Washington." How odd, then, that both Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden, are quintessentially Washington creatures.

Governor Palin, from Alaska, is about as far removed from Washington as you can be without living in Russia, just a hop away from her state.

She hunts, shoots, has a lifetime membership in the NRA, ice fishes, is Christian and pro-life.

A few months ago, Obama put down people like her, saying they "cling to their guns and their religion."

Something tells me Governor Palin is going to be a rock star in the states that really matter — Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan. They like their guns and religion, too.

In high school, Palin played basketball so fiercely that she earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda." She also played in the championship game with a stress fracture in her ankle, nailing a free throw in the critical final seconds.

She’s a cool chick and a tough cookie. I say again: somewhere Hillary smiles.

How can Crowley say Obama is “quintessentially Washington”? Perhaps Biden, but not Barack.

Yes Ms. Crowley …… thank you for your commentary. That is all that I can say for now as I am in a self-imposed “silence” mode regarding specifics on Gov. Sarah Palin …… pending the completion of my homework on her background and public record. Hi Lady Gator!!!!! Glad to know that you are doing okay. I have been thinking of you since the last storm. And here we are again …. waiting on Gustav!

You are doing research? I hope you will share. I was looking up a few things too, trying to get the other side of the trooper firing investigation, and finally found an article that explained why Palin was so upset about the whole thing: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/30/AR200808 Evidently she overheard this brother-in-law threaten her father’s life. Still to make it into Hatfield and McCoy involving state government may be improper. This hurricane is derailing the Republican convention, at least for tomorrow. This one looks very scary, heading straight for New Iberia.

Ms Crowley, I watch McLaughlin Group every week and we both know if Obama had chosen Hillary you would have said he didn’t have the “cajones” to stand up to the Clintons. Barack Obama chose a VP who is ready to take over if need be and brings impeccable foreign policy credentials to the office. McCain chose a VP who brings nothing to the office except those anti-choice people who only care about that one issue and don’t trust McCain with it. McCain has proven time and time again to have no ability or desire to surround himself with high caliber people, just more proof that he is another 4 years of Bush.

Quote from article by Monica Crowley~”Something tells me Governor Palin is going to be a rock star in the states that really matter — Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan. They like their guns and religion, too.” Why is it the term “rock star ” is used as a negative by Republicans to describe Obama, but they use it as a “positive” when describing folks in their own party? Sorry I find that rather hypocritical. Also the statement “States that really matter”? What the heck? Don’t all States matter, don’t all American’s matter? Or is it only the ones with lifetime memberships in the NRA and pro-lifers? The more I learn and read about Republicans, the more convinced I am that they will keep your country supressed in fear and on the verge of bankruptcy. But as long as they keep exporting American jobs to China, then the longer Republicans can access the bank of China to pay for your oil. Gee what a dismal future for the United States, IMHO.

Catherine, I observed the same thing when it came to describing Hillary Clinton in a thread recently. The term “rock star” has been used repeatedly to dismiss Obama’s abilities and to ridicule him, yet this past week the same term was used several times by both a several of the wowOwow people as well as people posting in here as a positive with regard to Clinton. Now it is again being used as a positive with regards to Palin being a “rock star”. Words have no meaning to the media and people in general these days.

No Way-No How -No McCain
Too bad we don’t have more informed, thinking people like you in the States, Catherine. Love your posts!

Have to question your assertion Monica that she is an environmentalist? Was that meant to be ironic? She is for drilling in ANWR, and she opposed putting the polar bear on the Endangered Species list. Hillary may be smiling, perhaps even laughing, but if so, she’s laughing at John McCain’s foolishness and that of the GOP. Hillary supporters are way smarter than he and the GOP gives them credit for.

Someone commented a few days back in the discussion of an article about Michele Obama that she should be at home taking care of her two little girls and not be running around and trying to get her husbans elected-that was the gist of the comment anyway. Now we’ve got Ms. Crowley praising Palin as the savior of the Rep. party. Ms. Palin who has 5 kids, including a newborn with Downes Syndrome. You think she might want to be around her chilren more, wouldn’t you? I’m not saying she should give up being Gov., although my cousin who lives in Alaska might. According to an article on the Huffington Post, Palin is so Anti-Choice that she opposes rape and incest exceptions for women seeking an abortion. While she may have said something nice about Hillary today, she has publically stated that she could couldn’t support her because “Hillary’s whining turned her off.” So Ms. Crowley why don’t you and Ms. Noonan go out and have a cup of coffee together and come back and write more pieces about how awful Obama’s speech was and how wonderful it was for McCain to pick this particular woman as his running mate. (Maybe he’s looking to dump Cindy and find a new mate.)

As far as the couple of posts stating that Palin’s move up the ladder of politics is proof that she’s a player, I just heard an Alaskan political analyst on PBS say “To be fair, she has been lucky enough to always be running against very unpopular and sometimes criminal opponents. Senator Biden will be her first quality opponent.”

Re Ject
Why is Barack’s lack of experience a good thing and Sarah’s is a bad thing? Why, as women, are we belittling the success of another woman? I don’t see eye-to-eye with Hilary politically, but I respect her tenacity and admire her ambition to be what she wills and be stopped by no one. Can’t we take a moment to say congratulations to a woman making it onto the VP ticket, because that’s a huge achievement. Period. Face it, there are only two VP slots per election cycle and Sarah made one. Yay for Sarah. There are plenty women haters out there, do we have to be so quick to jump on the bitterness and sour grapes band wagon?

Come on Re Ject, there are plenty of women in the Rep party who are way more qualified. Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snow are 2 that come to mind. McBush (That was not a misprint.) is pandering to the fundamentalist conservative side of his party.

Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe are RINOS—republicans in name only—and those of us in the GOP hold them in about as much regard as you Dems hold Lieberman. This is not about what Dems think about who McCain picks, it’s about what we republicans think. INo one cares what the republicans thought of Obama’s pick in Biden. You didn’t see republican women complaining on this site about that choice. It was Obama’s choice, if the Dems are happy with it, so be it. Why would we want someone you feel comfortable with anymore than you are willing to nominate someone we feel comfortable with? If that were the case, I would want Lieberman to be the Dem nominee.
