Monica Crowley: Somewhere, Hillary Is Smiling

By Monica Crowley

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Somewhere, Hillary Clinton is smiling.

She’s smiling because John McCain had the cojones to do what Barack Obama did not: put a woman on his ticket.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is now running with McCain as his choice to be vice president. She is a tax-cutting, pro-drilling, environmentalist, gun-defending, pro-life mom of five, with a son in the Army about to be deployed to Iraq.

You want "change?" Here it is. Obama said last night that change doesn’t come "from Washington, it comes TO Washington." How odd, then, that both Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden, are quintessentially Washington creatures.

Governor Palin, from Alaska, is about as far removed from Washington as you can be without living in Russia, just a hop away from her state.

She hunts, shoots, has a lifetime membership in the NRA, ice fishes, is Christian and pro-life.

A few months ago, Obama put down people like her, saying they "cling to their guns and their religion."

Something tells me Governor Palin is going to be a rock star in the states that really matter — Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan. They like their guns and religion, too.

In high school, Palin played basketball so fiercely that she earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda." She also played in the championship game with a stress fracture in her ankle, nailing a free throw in the critical final seconds.

She’s a cool chick and a tough cookie. I say again: somewhere Hillary smiles.

You are assuming Obama has a lack of experience. A lack of experience being wrong yes. Palin has a lack of experience. She was a mayor of a tiny town of about 5,000 (tho someone said 9,000, either is almost too tiny to be a town). And she has 18 months “experience” as the governor of a state which has fewer people in it than the big cities of the US. And according to an Alaskan political analyst I heard speaking today, she got those two positions by running against candidates with terrible approval ratings and even pending criminal investigations. She is not a person fit to be our president, fit to represent us in the world… Imagine the United States being represented at the G8 by her?? This is not the person, male or female, to be a heartbeat from the most powerful position in the world.

Palin has been governor since 2006 - by inauguration it will be 3 years as governor of the largest state in the US bordered by 2 foreign countries, one of them hostile. She has negotiated complicated leasing deals, oil deals, extra taxes on oil profits, $1200 rebates to citizens. She plays hardball with the big boys, taking down the incumbent governor and the Attorney General - both from her own party- and still has an 80% approval rating in her state. She is Commander of the National Guard in Alaska. (Obama has zero foreign policy experience, zero military experience.)

As of now Palin has been governor for EIGHTEEN months of a state with ONE-FIFTH the population of Chicago. Before that she was the mayor of a “town” of less than 6,000 people. According to the town’s bylaws her 2 top duties were to “sit in on council meeting but may not vote” and “attend ceremonial functions” Also, the “80%” approval rating has been challenged even by the Anchorage news media and has been dropping steadily in the short 18 months that she has been in office. If you want our country in the hands of this pro-creationist anti-women’s rights person who as zero relevant experience to run a country should McCain be unable to finish his term… that is up to you. But don’t hide behind pretending this woman is anything but what she is.

This is a great day for the women of America. I have been walking on cloud 9 since this morning! Sarah Palin is one remarkable woman. I’ve been talking to other women friends and they are energized by this choice also! This is such a stride for all of us women who work so hard just to live our lives and to accomplish our dreams. No amount of nay-saying from celebrity or other Obama supporters can diminish Sarah Palin’s accomplishments or her qualifications!!!! Let’s drop all the negativity and celebrate together that for once an accomplished and qualified woman is getting ahead in politics! Kudos to all American women without whom our country would not be as great as it is now!

No, Hillary isn’t smiling and anybody who would think she would be is as clueless as the rep party about why Hillary was our first choice. This is an insult to Hillary and all thinking women.(sadly some women don’t realize why)

HIllary had no experience as an elected official before she ran for the Senate. Imagine if Sarah had become governor based on her husband’s elected office with no other experience of her own. HIllary has no foreign policy experience - she’s never been involved in any foreign negotiations.

In the politics of personality, Palin is an interesting new addition to the debate and who knows how that will end. But in the politics of issues, nothing has changed; McCain/Palin mean to give us four more years of Bush to all our detriment. Obama/Biden do not to all our benefit.

Monica, if you think Hillary Clinton is smiling, then I don’t believe you know the Senator. My guess is that she’s laughing her head off at McCain’s (and the Rove party boys) pick for his running mate. Laughing at the absurdity of it all. Laughing at possibly the worst choice an already questionable candidate could make. Sarah Palin just might be McCain’s very own Harriet Miers.

Last evening Senator Obama made his historical acceptance speech before his adoring delegates and many ordinary Colorado citizens who wanted to share this moment in history with the senator. The Senator gave his speech through almost constant applause. Many of the pundits said it was a speech worthy of the occasion. Others, including some African American listeners, were not too sure. You would think that people and pundits would be talking and reliving this speech for days if not weeks. Oh yeah? Within a time frame of less than 24 yours, what is the country talking about? John McCain and his selection of Governor Palin of Alaska as his VP nominee. I guess we now know what event is the more newsworthy, if not as historical. Looks good for the election of John McCain. A little too early to say but it looks like today has “been a bright, sunny day”. If Hillary is smiling, she isn’t the only one.

No Way-No How -No McCain
It is amazing how unsophisticated and just dumb anyone could be not to have figured out Rove’s strategies after 8 years of the same blueprint. Announcing a radical and outrageous and controversial VP selection was done deliberately after Obama’s speech to take the attention off of the issues, and also the fact that he had garnered the largest global TV audience in poltical history….by almost double. He also had a larger audience than the Olmpics Opening in Bejing, the Oscars, and all but a few Super Bowls. Rove’s operating MO has always been, and he learned it from the evil master Lee Attwater of Watergate/Nixon fame—-the Doctrine of Chaos and Distraction. A Beauty Queen, a relative unknown, a neophyte, a woman. Not to mention that Fox is the propaganda arm of the GOP and if they go 24/7 on something the others will follow, and the reality is that most news in the US follows the average Americans attention span, which is to say, not long. “I guess we now know what event is the more newsworthy, if not as historical.” We know what is more sensationalized….including that she may be indicted soon and this spotlight will put her Troppergate more in the news as it was today in the Washington Post. And it is also newsworthly because it is the worst VP selection in the history of the US. “Looks good for the election of John McCain.”….so amusing.

No Way-No How -No McCain
What is going to be hysterical is when Miss Congeniality who admitted that she never was interested in Iraq, didn’t have any International experience whatsoever, she has a degree in journalism from a third rate school, has been selected after one meeting with McSame because she is nothing but a PR prop…and she is going to be debating Biden. She is so clueless that on the stage during the announcement she had nothing to talk about but her husband’s sledding. She is an ignorant dummy who thinks humans have no effect on Global Warming, who wants creationism taught in schools, and is a dominionist—which is to say as stupid as they come—and she is going to be debating Biden. It’s going to be Bambi in a knife fight with a Ninja. Preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww It’s going to be soooo much fun to watch.

Interestingly, Tom Brokaw repeated over and over to not draw an incorrect conclusion by all the applause during Obama’s speech. He was referring to the rest of America.
