Sarah Palin Is No Ann Richards (Video)

Who even says politicians need to be funny? Quite frankly most of them are dull, boring and snore fests … which is fine. Instead, they should be considering how to figure out our country’s woes rather than firing off Totie Fields one-liners. "Saturday Night Live" might have pulled huge ratings by having Sarah Palin on this past weekend, but Governor Palin, you’re no Ann Richards. Oh, and you’re also no Tina Fey as Sarah Palin! (But Tina’s got the comedy thing down pat so back to Palin.)

Have I not followed everything Palin has said?  Has she had one decent laugh-out-loud one-liner since entering the race as the Republican vice-presidential nominee? Have I missed a side splitter? I mean, that lipstick-on-a-pig slinger was no bombastic blaster. Palin saying, "Live from New York!" didn’t make me giggle nor did her repartee (if you can call it that) with uber-liberal Alec Baldwin make me holler: "Now, that’s funny." We have to go back in time to a quick-thinking funny governor from Texas to remember and treasure the skill of being a highly regarded politician who could also tell a joke.

Ann Richards gave the famously memorable regarded keynote speech at the 1988 Democratic National convention. Remember her classic zinger? "Poor George, he can’t help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth." That was simply the way Richards spoke day in and day out. (By the way, you can betcha’ Ann would have rapped with the Eskimos on "SNL"!) Her biting humor was also known for not offending an opposing viewpoint. With her wisecracks also came the gift of charm, compassion and a tone of voice that was never mean. "We’re gonna tell how the cow ate the cabbage," were lines that came out as natural as if she had been given the gift of a silver tongue. You just get the sense that Sarah Palin might be a mean one and a little bit of a bully. (I don’t know, Troopergate?)

No doubt she can be charming. Politicians have that skill down too so they can get your vote and then once they’ve notched their spot again for another four or six years, they don’t necessarily have to be all that charming, or even fun. Or in this case trying to be what they’re not on "Saturday Night Live." As Chevy Chase said of her appearance, "What was brilliant about ["SNL" chief] Lorne [Michaels] was that he had nothing written for Sarah and that apparently she cannot improvise herself out of a paper bag!"

He doesn’t have to be. In the future someone will be saying “Senator, you are no Barack Obama.”

DeB, I’ve been away for awhile due to a death in the family, but happy to be back and reading your posts, which I have always enjoyed. A friend of mine in the States, who is Republican, had a shirt made for me that says “A Canadian Mama for Obama!” which of course I wear with great pride!

That’s great! My son has a t-shirt that says “My Mama Likes Obama”!

Oh, and Catherine, I am sorry about the death in your family… I didn’t mean THAT was “great”, I meant the shirt.

BTW Catherine… are the Canadians as perplexed as the Irish over Palin? In Ireland they are absolutely aghast that she is in the position of perhaps being a heart beat away from the presidency of the US!

Hey DeB, no worries I knew what you meant lol. Omg, you are trying to get me into trouble with that question aren’t you! (wink). DeB, I can’t speak for all Canadians, but just let me share this with you. Once a week, I get together with a great group of my lady friends, from all walks of life. From Christians, to Athiests, moms and women who have chosen not to have kids, straight and gay, stay home moms and working moms. We make a group of about 15 -20 from week to week. Last week we took over a local coffee shop, to discuss the outcome of our own election, which in turn brought up the subject of your election. Palin came up in conversation, and the concensus was unanimous, it’s scary to think that this woman is a heartbeat away from the presidency. Eventually we had other patrons in the coffee shop involved in the conversion, it was quite exciting really, and with the exception of one person, out of all of those that came and went, the sentiment was the same, how could this woman possibly be ready to be president.

Well, that is the exact sentiment I found in Ireland too.

De, I forgot to mention that in China they feel the same way about Sarah Palin……….. I think the rest of the World thinks we’ve lost our minds.

Ooops lost my connection there for a second. Anyway, DeB, from those I have spoken with there is literally no support for McCain or Palin. Some folks have said they are afraid of McCain and Palin starting new wars and dragging down the G7 economies even further. So I can safely say that my fellow Canadians I speak to are certainly aghast and perplexed at the prospect of this woman being president. Another concensus, from the other night with my group and those that chimed in, was that Obama, is refreshing and presents a stature worthy of being a Leader. Many felt that Obama, could restore the USA on the world stage, and he would be best likely to improve ally relations strained under the Bush administration. The only positive thing stated by one bystander that chimed in was that the only redeeming quality of Palin is that she likes hockey, which is Canadians favorite pastime, so she isn’t all bad. That was that one exception I was referring too. Many also feel McCain is a hypocrite, attacking Obama for having 100% negative ads, which is false, and attacking Obama for a negative campaign, after claiming he wouldn’t stoop to such tactics, yet has stooped to those tactics over and over again, now robocalling, and the comment that he is now rethinking his decision of not bringing up the “Rev”, and still harping about Ayers even tho he claimed he didn’t care about it and that they should be discussing the issues, yet he still uses it as an attack ploy. That’s what I’m hearing up here DeB.

Catherine Kaiman, Welcome back………..sorry to hear of the death in your family. I was talking to my Chinese friend today, I asked her if people were interested in our election over there. She talks to her sister everyday who still lives in China. She said Yes, people watch everything they can about American politics. She also told me They really love Obama.

Thank you Dona! The American election is playing all over the world, and it certainly has the worlds attention. It over took our own recent election, which I’m sad to say had it’s lowest voter turn out in history. Oh well at least the right guy got the job! Apparently Obama is huge in Israel as well. According to my father inlaw. I’ve heard that even some long time Republicans are stepping up for Obama, isn’t that interesting!

From everything I have heard or seen, it seems most other countries really want us to elect Obama, so we can get this Nation back to some semblance of normalcy.

I live in the wilderness, I guess. I want a T-shirt too! How about: McCaine ain’t Able! [Caine and Able? Two brothers in the OT Bible]??
