Sex Trafficking of Children in America? Tragic but True

Cynthia McFadden

It may be hard to believe, but all over this country, young girls, American girls, are being bought and sold for sex. I do not mean women who work willingly as prostitutes. I am talking about underage girls, as young as 12 years old, who are forced to provide sex to strangers or risk losing their lives. The FBI estimates that, at this very moment, 100,000 minors in this country are being forced to trade sex for money. Some advocacy groups estimate the number may be three times that.

Over the years I have reported on the enslavement of women in various places around the world, from the children sold in the sex markets in India to the women from the former Soviet Union sold to brothels around the world. Though such bondage is not legal in other countries, it is openly practiced. The police turn their backs and their eyes as girls as young as nine are bought for sex in the markets of Mumbai, and teenagers looking for a better life after the fall of the former Soviet Union have their passports held until they can "pay back" their purchase price in capital cities around the world. But, I confess, it is not a story I thought I would be telling from Toledo, OH.

While the notion of sexual slavery inside the United States comes as a shock to many, for the past three years a team of us at ABC have been following the story of two cousins, kidnapped off the sidewalk in Toledo. Wednesday evening, July 16th at 10 PM, I hope you will watch the result of our work on Primetime Crime "Kidnapped Cousins": A Story of Domestic Sex Trafficking in the U.S." (ABC at 10 PM EST).

The hour provides a rare, and we hope important look inside the underground and disturbing world of domestic trafficking of children. Our story looks at two middle-American teenage cousins – ages 14 and 15 – on their way to buy milkshakes a few blocks from home, who end up kidnapped right off of a main street in Toledo. Soon, they are imprisoned in a house only a few miles away from their parents and forced into a dark and dangerous world in which they are forced to engage in sex with strangers for money which is paid – entirely – to their pimp. From the terrifying abduction and the harsh training that follows, to their indoctrination and forced prostitution, the two victims speak candidly with us.

We go undercover with police who show us how they try to break up these loose networks of pimps and prostitutes who often end up working at truck stops along the nation’s highways. In fact, predators use America’s crisscrossing interstate highways to move these girls like cargo around the country, where they are quickly absorbed into this shadowy world, making escape even more difficult.

A word about the scope of this problem: The FBI has been so concerned about the rise of domestic trafficking of children that for the past five years they have funded a program called the "Innocence Lost Initiative," which has led to the conviction of 308 individuals on a combination of state and federal charges and led to the recovery of 433 child victims. The most recent raid was earlier this summer in which the FBI made simultaneous raids in 16 states, and rescued 21 underage girls. Nonetheless, sex trafficking seems to be an epidemic hiding in plain sight. But the head of the Innocence Lost task force, FBI special agent Mike Beaver, told me, make no mistake about it. Children in America are being forced into sexual slavery every day in this country. "There are children throughout the United States that are being sold as prostitutes," says Special Agent Beaver. "It’s not uncommon to see 12- and 13-year-olds out. What we’ve learned is if you have adult prostitution in an area, there’s probably child prostitution occurring as well. So it’s more of a black market, it’s more underground, but it’s there."

For more about the story go to http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=5374277 as well as the Primetime website at http://www.abcnews.com/primetime.

I hope you’ll take a look at the hour and let me know your thoughts.

JoAnna, Beautifully said…The reason for all our ill’s, we have become a God-less nation. We have pushed God out of our schools and have allowed drug pushers in. We have unseated Godly judges that believed in the sanctity of life and replaced them with judges who don’t think any more of a fetus, than a disposable piece of bad meat. We have a judicial system of precidents, rather than the original law of our founding fathers that were based on the principals of God and what was completely fair and just. We have a govenment filled with men in office who have the minds of children and no concious idea of/nor ability to lead what was once a great nation and one that was always intended to be the Super power of Super powers. A country who was in a place of power, wealth and respect with the ability to reach out and care for those in need, no matter what the country. Instead, we are completely under the want and need of the service, product and goods of almost every other country. We were never intended to be under the mercy… if you will, to the vast reliance and utter dependancy on others to which we now must live. We have parents in this country that feel is is better to be the best friend to the child, rather than realize there was a far more important concept and reasoning behind the role of parenting, That they (children) are to be loved and valued, taught the difference between what is right/wrong and disciplined/rewarded accordingly. That they in turn would grow up to be self sufficient, independantly thinking, morally upstanding responsible adults We have a society that want’s what it want’s now and with no regard as to how it is achieved. The list of ill’s go on and on.The aforementioned are the foundations of the cause…What we live in and see are the results. Yes…We have a sick and dying world all because we don’t want to hear/can’t be bothered with what God has to say about the things we need to do and the ways in which we need to live, in order to be happy, fulfilled and at peace with one another. Society, “Man/Women” continue to think that we are the one’s who know all…..And yet, We are in such disaray with the complete inability to fix us.

Elaine, Beautifully worded. Until our core values change, things will stay the same or get worse. How do we fix us? I’ve seen so many mini miracles in my own life that I believe that God still moves mountains. If every American man and woman would wake up and realize that there is work to be done to reclaim the America that was, we could accomplish an incredible amount of good. The power of God in one person is amazing. What would it be like if billions of us turned to God and really let God work through us to “fix” or “rehabilitate” our country. Mary Ann

Dearest Maryann, Thats the key question, “how do we fix us?” The answer is that we first have to believe that someone is greater than ourselves and that we were not created by accident and without purpose. That purpose and reason for our creation was designed as a means for having a relationship with the creator…God. Also letting us know that we cannot go it alone, we need the help of God. We need to get back to the word of God to see just what it is that we are supposed to do and how it is to be done. You’re right the power of God is amazing, It’s just so sad that so many don’t see it or just refuse to take a look.

I agree Elaine. I became a life coach, because I honestly felt that this was a way I could use my professional skills to help people. I know that God led me on this path. I truly don’t care if I make much money through coaching. Honest engine! I’m already a rich lady with the things that matter in life. I love what happens to kids, men and women when I help them dissolve those toxic thoughts planted in their heads, which were really untrue stories keeping them from their purpose. Most people suddenly beam with a radiance that can’t be described, as they are freed from the traps of toxic thinking. I still am very much a work in progress. Yet, I think I have to do my part to change my corner of the world to make a difference. It hit me one day that many of the children, who attend the elementary school where I’m the part time director, are there from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We, the school staff, have to step up to the plate and realize that we have to be the significant adults in these kids’ lives. I wish it wasn’t so, but at least I work with an incredible team, who are there for the rewards of making a lasting impact for good on the life of a child. I have a feeling that you’re working very hard in your corner to do what you are led to do to make this world spin in a kinder, loving manner. Keep letting your light shine. Mary Ann

Hi Maryann, Yes I try and will continue to do so. I to have worked with young people namely young women who have become pregnant and have no where to turn. I have opened up my home to be a safe haven for many and showed them that there are those who care for both mother and child and as a result I have been blessed beyond measure by the love I’ve recieved and the blossoming of these young girls who become confident young women in realizing that even tho they did not use the best judgement, they found refuge so as not to compound the situation. We are all a work in progress it is when we think that we have fully arrived…That we realize that there is still so much to learn/do. Maryann, you are a blessing to me on this site and your light is very visable…Thank you!

>>The reason for all our ill’s, we have become a God-less nation.<< No, I don’t believe this at all. There are many athiests and agnostics who are good people, who don’t do drugs, start wars, or other horrendous deeds. On the other hand, many who believe in god and go to church do drugs, start wars, murder people, molest and abuse women and children and more. I agree with your list of ills including parents who think it’s more important to be friends with their children, not parents is part of a big problem. But, none of this has anything to do with believing or not believing in god. Generalizing that all have to believe in god to make this world a good place is an ethnocentric viewpoint.

HA BIBI
Rachel B, Thats ok, you don’t have to believe. However it is found that those who are agnostic really are just kind of sitting on the side lines not really having a difinative idea as to what is real or what might be…In other words in a state of confusion, which seems like a lonely place to be. As for those who are athiestic, I find to be in an even sadder state, as they either believe one of two things, that this is it…When we die “Kaput”, thats all folk’s or that we keep re-evolving/reincarnating somehow untill we get it right. Gosh, for me…That in and of itself would be so unfair…Say, for example that you went your whole life doing everything you thought was good and kind to others and yet you died and had to come back through this place and re-deal/live again with all those same people who were still on the planet when you left…..Who didn’t care at all whom they hurt or how they did it,Going thru all the same hurt and sorrows again and again! And, better yet, what about those who just never seemed to get it right time and time again. The bible clearly states that it is appointed for man to die once and that to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord. In other words we only go through the flesh life one time…No repeat performances. Yes, I do agree that there are agnostics/athiests that don’t do evil to others and yes there are…Let me say this, “So called christians” that on the outside verbalize they are christians but live a lie and spend more time trying to convince others they are by there so called sunday appearances at a house of prayer. If they are doing drugs, screwing the neighbors wife/husband, murdering/rioting……These are not christians….These are liars. But rachel, God has never declared these to be christian, yet clearly labels them anything but. With all due respect, you show your biblical illiteracy, in making that statement, which was a point brought forth in my above posting. People need to get back to the word of God, the bible. They don’t or did look at it and decided they wanted to continue to live their lives in sin. I’ll tell you this…There may be athiests/agnostics that don’t create evil…But will bet that every one who does create evil is definately not going to be a true christian.Rachel, I hate to inform you but the moral decay in this world constitutes the very basis for the ill’s of not only this nation but of the world in total. If there were not God..How would you or any of us, have initiated the formula and then operate the principles that have proven themselves to be not only true but highly effective in bringing about the change in millions and millions of lives throughout the world, generation after generation. Do you really think mankind is that intelligent? Sadly the answer is no, we are not. Hence forth, those athiest/agnostics who behave so properly if not Godly,…..Where did they derive their morals/values. please don’t say their parents, as I would then continue down the line of ancestry, only to find that somewhere, there were Godly principles being taught/implemented within that family. “Generalizing that all have to believe in God to make this world a good place is an ethnocentric viewpoint” Your statement….God’s statement “I wrote the book on how you are to live in these flesh bodies. Now rachel, If you and others wish to call God a liar, have at it, as it is no skin off the teeth of the millions and millions who do believe he exists and is a very present member in our lives. I don’t see the wind…I see the power of what it is able to accomplish

Elaine- I did not get abused for 8 years because I didn’t believe in God or because I lived in an ungodly house and I take great offense to that simplification of something that is much more complicated. I was taught right from wrong. I went to church with my mother. I studied the Bible. I prayed nightly…OVER AND OVER that it wouldn’t happen again…no not that night…please God give me a rest. Those prayers didn’t stop my abuser. Puhleez! You think sexual abuse just started…say in the last 20 years or so. No, it’s just that now we get the information at an incredible rate with the internet, tv’s 500 stations…lalala I have to say, it sure is easy for you to generalize this and bring it into a nice neat little box. The morals of our country or lack there of are just more publicized now….sex sells. But don’t you think for one minute that this wasn’t happening in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s. helloooo, it was happening pre-Ceasar..it was all behind closed doors of…dare I say christian households. AND another thing….where was God every night that I begged….he must have been at your house because you earned him …right? Give me a break. Where do you get off. Can you tell I feel strongly about this?

Elaine AL Meqdad ………. After reading my comments to your post and then “re-reading” your own, I would encourage you to consider how your “choice in verbiage” could have made this dialog a communication of principals and ideals rather than character assassinations towards others whom do not follow in the same religious path as you. God is not a “reason for an action”, nor is the “absence” of God a “reason for an action”. Individuals make conscientious decisions. It is this conscientiousness that affords us as human beings the ability to love, to hate, to judge, to defile, ect.

Linda- Wow! You said that a lot better than I did! Exactly…free will baby… God’s greatest gift…. sometimes. Their is no more sincere prayer a child can offer than the one of pure innocent desire for safety.

Lily- Thank you for standing up here. I just noticed that wow took this topic off…hmmmmmmm? Anyhow, it is a personal topic and I gave a personal response. I do not regret ever telling the truth about my past. I did at one time but now it sets me free!

Elaine, You have evidently either forgotten or chosen to ignore that Jesus preached humility and that pride goeth before a fall. The idea that this country is somehow destined, above all other groups of human beings, to be “the super power of all super powers” is ludicrous. That kind of arrogance has accounted for unimaginable evil in this world. It is too bad that you have met so many people who are not kind, hard working, respectable and care greatly about their families, friends and communities. I have been blessed all of my life to encounter wonderful people wherever I go. I find it enough in life to stay on a path and have never found it helpful to judge or to be judged by other people.

Elaine, how good for you that you are so very sure of what is true in this complex and dangerous world. I’m sure your God makes you feel safe and warm and able to judge everyone and everything with such unerring aim. Alas, God also made the abusers and the victims, the rapist and the raped. God made everything you see and hear, all of the universe is composed of the same whatever it is. God is not speaking, it is our interpretations of what we think God says that get us in trouble. The infinite is that, infinite, beyond all human comprehension.
