Sexting: The New Frontier of Flirting, Should You Do It?

We’ve just learned about this latest trend in flirting: "sexting." It’s the act of sending nude or semi-nude photographs via cell-phone text messaging — and it’s apparently sweeping the nation. While the dirty deed might sound exciting for many young teens, it’s landing several middle school and high school students in hot water.

CBS News reports:

While it may be shocking, the practice of "sexting" — sending nude pictures via text message — is not unusual, especially for high schoolers around the country. This week, three teenage girls who allegedly sent nude or semi-nude cell-phone pictures of themselves, and three male classmates in a western Pennsylvania high school who received them, are charged with child pornography. In October a Texas eighth-grader spent the night in a juvenile detention center after his football coach found a nude picture on his cell phone that a fellow student sent him. Roughly 20 percent of teens admit to participating in "sexting," according to a nationwide survey (pdf) by the National Campaign to Support Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "This is a serious felony. They could be facing many years in prison," CBS News legal analyst Lisa Bloom said of the six teens in Pennsylvania.

Also, word to the older and wiser: While "sexting" may be perfectly OK between two legal-aged lovebirds, you should still be really careful … You wouldn’t want to misplace your cell phone.

Right on Jim. It seems that some of those posting here, think all this is just great, but they are the ones who someday will get the big suprrise when they least expect it.

Jim…first why are you blaming the women? Men are parents also and have just as much responsibility as raising their daughters and sons we the Mother’s do. I can tell you something my husband puts just as much effort into raising our daughter as I do…He does it mostly out of LOVE but he also does it b/c he knows as a Father that is his “job”…You must not be a parent b/c if you were one you would know it takes two to raise a child with the communities help…

No one said that things are just great. They are not, and that is evident. But it has nothing to do with god or religion. In a country where porn stars earn more than people who went through university, what do you expect? And again, parents are responsible for their children’s upbringing, no one else is. And the fact that the parents are not interested in doing that is what you should be concerned about.

I agree with many of the people who posted about adults (not necessarily their parents, but other significant adults in their lives) not knowing about how the technology is used. Teenagers also use the internet to cyberbully their peers. Those who choose to participate in these activities don’t seem to have an understanding that a real person is on the receiving end of the sexting pics or the harmful words and that they have NO control over how that person responds to the pic or the words they post online. Many of them keep their mobile phones switched on at night by their beds (which is why they are so often tired when they get to school) their parents are just not aware. They think that buying a phone will allow them to keep tabs on their child, or that by installing the internet in their bedrooms and allowing them all access will help them with their assignments. It doesn’t work that way. Parents need to better understand how the technology works - once it is demystified, then parents will probably feel more confident in dealing with these issues.

After reading some of the many comments in this and other posts, it appears that many of you on here show absolutely no respect for others veiw points. You bash the person, call them names, rather than debating the issue or point that they are making, & have the nerve to make comments that they do not respect your position. Many times your repies do not reply to the position at all. If you want others respect you first need to show respect. I am a conservative, and happen to think that Ann Coulter is a very intelligent woman with alot of great things to say. Yes she is very passionate about her point of view, but so am I in my views & beliefs as well. I respect others point of view, as their right to express it, but that does not mean I have to accept & believe that point of view. I have read comments by people expressing views that many of you do not agree with, & see lots of rage & anger directed at them. it appears that many of you do not believe in God, or have different views on religion. but I a read replies to people that have expressed their strong Christian beliefs, & these are not debates of there point, but vicious attacks on their beliefs or them personally. I also have very strong Christian beliefs, & believe that thru Jeuses is the only way to heaven & openly express those views. Some of you think that this is you own little website for just your own select small group. It is not, as anything that is on the web is public for anyone to see, any where in the world. Your attacks on President George W. Bush, & other conservative leader are vicious unwarranted attacks, that serve not purpose, but many out there in this country that share your views, such as many Democrats in congress,Hollywood & in the MSM media, seem to think it is perfectly ok to attack attack attack, but do not show any of your own ideas for changing things. You attack, & then wonder why those with opposite view points who reach a point that they have had enough, fight back with their own attacks on you. What the big media, & many of you, do to Sarah Palin for expressing her view, is a disgrace. Before you cast stones at others, you need to look at yourselves & some the big names in media, congress & hollywood that support your view point are doing first. Only then will you open your minds, & accept the views of others as their veiw point (even is you do not agree with them) & debate, not just bash. If you want respect you must first show respect. I am a conservative (not a republican), & have been & still am very critical of such presidents as Johnson, Carter, Clinton & now Obama. I believe in less goverment, market economy, & do not believe in and am strongly against socialism, which is the direction that this nation has been going ever since FDR, & was boosted by Johnson in the 1960’s. Clinton added some more to this, but I fear that Obama & his crowd in the house and senate, are bent on turning this nation into a very radical socialist country. I voted for G W Bush both times. I feel that he has kept this nation from being attacked again, but I do not have a very good feeling with Obama, because of his soft leanings toward our enemy. Having made that statement, I do not agree with all of the polices of Bush, beacuse I feel that he has allowed this country to move toward more goverment control in areas, such as education health care, & interfering in the free market economy. I feel that Regan was in will go down in History as one of this nations president, & feel that Bush will in time be vindicated as well. I see by the comments, that many of you believe in the idea of victimization of yourselves & other groups of people. We are all Americans, & when some groups of people feel victimized, & feel that they need specal laws & special treatment, you are really dicriminating against all other people that do not receive that specal treatment. These people are then made second class citizens. This past election cycle was a good example of that. Many white conservatives were made by Obama & the media to be racist, simply because we do not believe in most of what Obama stands for. This is our constitutional right to disagree, & we should not be ridiclued & called racist & other names just because we disagree, but that is what has happened in this country. It has made many of us take different look at blacks & other groups, beacuse we were attacked for simply stating our veiw. I am a white male & am not a racist person. As a matter of fact when I was in college back in the 1960’s I had a black roomate, who was one of the nicest people you would ever meet. We have large number of backs in our church, & all of those that I have met are very nice Christan people, that are a real pleasure to know. From some of the many of the comments thruought these blogs, I sense feel that men who express their view points are women haters. Most men including my self do not hate women, but for women to get that respect, they have to show that respect also. It appears that some of you, are or believe in the ideas of the radical feminist movement that demeans men & actually show no respect for most women who do not believe their radical views. My wife, who is a college educated woman,as I am, feels the same as I do concering the radical feminist movement, & she strongly believes that they do not repesent her values, as she as well as I grew up in a period of time (Late 1940’s - early 1960’s) when respect, strong moral values, strong work ethic & when strong Christian values & faith in God, were a part of this country that most children grew up with. Now are young people do not have that backbone, because of the do your own thing if it feels good nature that seems to prevail. We ho are are conservative are not your enemy, but when you show no respect for others view points, we become your enemy, if not in real terms, for sure in your own mind. I see alot of what appears to be very closed minds to anything that does not represent your views.

John Adams, who became the nation’s second president once, wrote: “Suppose a nation in some distant region should take the Bible for their only law book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited! Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love, and reverence toward Almighty God…What a Utopia, what a Paradise would this region be.”

Robert, first you say that we are not discussing the issue here, but only bash the persons and show no respect. Then you go in length about politics and do Bush vs. Obama story, completely bashing the subject we are talking about. Sorry, but you call that offtopic respectful? While we are at offtopic, why paragraphs are stripped off from comments? It is really hard to read these chunks of text.
