Sheila Nevins: Why Palin Is a Great Choice

Sheila Nevins

WOW ladies take a breather. This is a wonderful choice. It is a clear choice and that’s what America stands for. The issues that Palin represents though reprehensible to me - represent a constituency and a voice. American democracy represents the right to disagree. It also represents majority rule. The cards are on the table - race, abortion, gun control, stem cell research, taxation, godliness - you name it. There’s no fudging here - no middle of the road. rhetoric. Americans will declare their absolute preferences. And a woman will stand for this. Being a woman doesn’t mean agreeing with the WOW dames. Palin may not be in whom we trust, but there is an odd equality in the sheer selection. Women can be as arbitrary and right wing as any man. And for those of us for whom Sarah Palin’s beliefs belie our deepest convictions. So be it. The great truths lie in an honest ballot box. Vote and live in America or flee if you must. Great choice in the divide A civil war without bullets. Three cheers for clarity.

That “whining” remark is the hallmark of a bitchy and and arrogant point of view — a characteristic of all conservative women politicians. So, Sarah thinks she can take it. I say we give it to her good.” Jane Smiley, HuffPost Bravo!! Great article overall, everyone should read it. Thanks Marcia.

Oh Yeah Jane Smiley, That is a smart one Jane since most of your readers are women. Why don’t you just go and attack a woman who is succeeding at something you aren’t, and possibly lose readers. Real smart.

Ah yes, Ms. Smiley….your “reputation” precedes you.

I think you missed my point…sorry if I offended you or any of the people here. I think Joe Biden knows so much more than Palin that it would take a major distraction. I ‘ll go stand in the corner now. On my hands. Which will be very hard to do. Her selection by the Mc Cain’s is so mystifying especially when one thinks that Carly Fiorina (Former CEO of Hewlett Packard) is on his staff. She had to know how this would play out with most women.

LL If Fiorina was vetted, or even asked, she may have had something private that she didn’t want public. I don’t know, but I have wondered the same thing. When Colin Powell was vetted way back, he said no because he didn’t want to go through the process. So we don’t know. I would have to hear what Kitty O’Keefe has to say, but I don’t think that running mates from the business world have ever gotten a president elected. I think they usually pick from government. A governor is always hoped for because they have had experience in governing, not just legislation.

Sheila - “A civil war without bullets” ??? Do you mean a bloodless war between the two political parties, a war between men and women or a war just between the American female voters? To whatever you refer, I think there might just develop a war between the “feminist” and the “traditionalist” women of America and I cannot see how that could be a good advancement for anyone, especially women. Some men will laugh. Some will take sides. The traditional woman who does not align herself to the feminists is going to feel once again that she is being attacked, simply because of the choices she has made to live her own life. She does not want to be told that she is harming “womanhood” if she votes for a woman. Each side will want to tell the other how to live and how to vote. No one wins. From what I have read through these threads the last two days, I fear that some women are going to go after Governor Palin and treat her like a traitor or a barbie or even as stupid and ignorant. That will be a big mistake. But, if that is your bent, then go right ahead. Those women who will think of the attacks as unfair (and millions will) and perpetrated upon a decent woman from Alaska will thank you for the “civil war without bullets” by voting for John McCain and his Vice Presidential nominee, a woman who might not be as sophisticated as some of you…. nor as bloodthirsty, bullets or not. I still have not done much of my own research about Governor Palin but I am liking her already ——

Bonnie: “… a woman who might not be as sophisticated as some of you…. ” That is Sarah Palin’s charm. Hillary won the vote of millions of women by being able to look into their eyes and speak to their hearts… dressed in an old brown pantsuit and wearing practical shoes. I think Sarah Palin will play well in Kentucky and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Indiana… in short, all the states that Hillary did well in.

And I think you are 100% absolutely correct, Marjorie. Those women that Senator Obama dissed (embittered; clinging to their religion and guns) who love Hillary but under no circumstances will vote for Obama. John and Sarah will attempt to convince them to vote for them rather than not vote at all.

Bonnie, I think thepoint you are missing is that this is a 42 year old female whit a husband and five children, one with special needs. At present also a Gov. of Alaska. I darn impressive resume…how she does this is mind blowing. That said as we all know John McCain will be 74 when and if he takes office. If and that is a big if, but it is and IF with huge draconian weight… if he sure enter eternal life sooner than later and still in office…Sarah with al her gravitas would be President. That is a huge concern to me and I do think to most Americans. On the other hand if Obama were to have the same fate as JMC …Biden would be in charge Hmm, as I write this I see the argument does not hold up too well here either. Biden is no spring chicken even if he is head and shoulders above Palin in the experience arena. The next days will be telling. Then once the debates start I do firmly believe the answers to some of my q’s will become clearer.

Hello Lanee Barra - About your previous post about “toplessness”, I understand the point you were making….sometimes we all get wrapped up in our words and what appears is not our intent. No problem. As for the Vice Presidential selection, you make some good points but I am voting for the top of the ticket. I think in comparison to “experience” Senator McCain is the better qualified candidate. I am also very glad that all of John’s medical records have been released. His mother is 96, travels on the campaign bus and is still agile and quick thinking. Governor Palin has already passed the initial test of ability but we shall see how she fairs as the campaign continues. The pressure on her is overwhelming.

Bonnie …I agree the pressure will be overwhelmng and the scrutiny will be intense. For the record her views on many things are the antithesis of mine and a majority of women. On the lighter side I looked at the experience of some former VP’s and this one fellow Thomas R. Marshall had such a funny take on the office of the VP I thought it should be shared here. Upon his election as vice president, Marshall sent President-elect Woodrow Wilson a book, inscribed “From your only Vice.” He was known to greet citizens walking by his office on the White House tour by asking them to “be kind enough to throw peanuts at me.” Upon hearing of his nomination as Vice President (he was not present at the convention), Marshall quipped that he was not surprised, as “Indiana is the mother of Vice Presidents, home of more second-class men than any other state.” One of his favorite jokes was about a woman with two sons, one of whom ran away and went to sea and one of whom was elected Vice President of the United States. Neither was ever heard of again.

Thank you LL. Oh, I think we might hear a lot of VP stories this campaign. The debate between Biden and Palin (October 2nd ??) is an event for which so many are looking forward. We will probably hear also a lot of VP jokes this season…. maybe all to the good. Things have been pretty intense so far.

For the record, LL, … McCain will be 72 if and when he takes office.
