Sheila Nevins: Why Palin Is a Great Choice

Sheila Nevins

WOW ladies take a breather. This is a wonderful choice. It is a clear choice and that’s what America stands for. The issues that Palin represents though reprehensible to me - represent a constituency and a voice. American democracy represents the right to disagree. It also represents majority rule. The cards are on the table - race, abortion, gun control, stem cell research, taxation, godliness - you name it. There’s no fudging here - no middle of the road. rhetoric. Americans will declare their absolute preferences. And a woman will stand for this. Being a woman doesn’t mean agreeing with the WOW dames. Palin may not be in whom we trust, but there is an odd equality in the sheer selection. Women can be as arbitrary and right wing as any man. And for those of us for whom Sarah Palin’s beliefs belie our deepest convictions. So be it. The great truths lie in an honest ballot box. Vote and live in America or flee if you must. Great choice in the divide A civil war without bullets. Three cheers for clarity.

And while you’ve got us thinking about golden and/or cooked geese, how about a passing nod to the Emperor’s New Clothes? Fairy Tales Rock…

Georgia — I think you should play around with that fairy tale - seriously — as fables do often bring the point home in ways otherwise would fall on deaf ears. Go for it, lady!

I’ll go fish out the book and get back to you on this….meantime, do you remember the old saw about the savvy fundraiser who put all his begs in one ask-it? ..and the difference between a northern and a southern fairy tale? One begins: “Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom…” and the other one starts: “Y’all ain’t gonna believe this s—t”….

Georgia — You, dear Georgia, are going to have a very special niche on this site — so keep at it. I love cleverness - and one who can write it as you do, and about this time THIS week, aren’t we overdue for some levity to break the seriousness that we have been going at it? So promise, do what you do best — and do it often!!!

Why is the goose roasted or you deprived—just vote for Senator Obama if you don’t like the other choice. That’s what voting is FOR. I am a Dem who is now politically homeless—stuff happens, as they say.

Star: What reasons do you consider yourself politically homeless?

A Star is born or is an independent born? It’s hard, but this is how it happens.

Well, Star, an interesting thing is happening in our city. I am suddenly seeing Bob Barr yard signs. Honestly, today I drove down the main drag of one of our most popular neighborhoods, and saw Ron Paul and Bob Barr yard signs in front of various homes. I was pretty surprised to see them.

Well said, Joan. You might enjoy the talking points of a new wowowow member who has offered a very comprehensive list of every conceivable Palin talking point on the John McCain Birthday page: http://www.wowowow.com/user/15575 I opined there that these will all be debunked and rebutted in due course, and suggested that this choice is far from an egotistical Hail Mary pass on McCain’s part, but clearly a diabolical Rovian tactic of the worst kind. My assumption is that many who would refuse to vote for Obama based on conscious or subconscious prejudice (racial or otherwise) will happily rationalize voting against their own economic interests by citing the McCain ticket’s historic nature and claiming to be supporters of the rights of women. I refuse to believe a substantial number of Clinton supporters will go for the McCain ticket. I am curious about the background of the PUMAs and Democrats for McCain, etc. — many of them may be the “independents” who were told by Limbaugh to vote for Hillary.

Michael - I want to clear something up for you. Please be advised that people who choose to vote for John McCain are more likely to do so because of something so trivial as experience and integrity to name a few - versus race. I find it extremely racist to vote for someone because of their skin color just as it is to not vote for someone because of the color of their skin. I can not believe there has been little said by the press for those who are voting for Obama because he is black. Sarah Palin is a great choice and tonight was a good night for the McCain/Palin ticket.

Funny, no need for admonishment when Biden’s name was announced—you be the judge. “Women can be as arbitrary and right wing as any man. “—Gee, Thanks. Just when I thought some civility was entering the debate. “Belie”, now that’s the operative word here.
