Sheila Nevins: Why Palin Is a Great Choice

Sheila Nevins

WOW ladies take a breather. This is a wonderful choice. It is a clear choice and that’s what America stands for. The issues that Palin represents though reprehensible to me - represent a constituency and a voice. American democracy represents the right to disagree. It also represents majority rule. The cards are on the table - race, abortion, gun control, stem cell research, taxation, godliness - you name it. There’s no fudging here - no middle of the road. rhetoric. Americans will declare their absolute preferences. And a woman will stand for this. Being a woman doesn’t mean agreeing with the WOW dames. Palin may not be in whom we trust, but there is an odd equality in the sheer selection. Women can be as arbitrary and right wing as any man. And for those of us for whom Sarah Palin’s beliefs belie our deepest convictions. So be it. The great truths lie in an honest ballot box. Vote and live in America or flee if you must. Great choice in the divide A civil war without bullets. Three cheers for clarity.

Hi DeBurca, “Latte drinking liberal” - I like that. Before this note, I posted a reply to you, but I forgot to hit the reply button. So it’s on page 13.

Sheila, I think the majority of us who disagree try do so respectfully. However there are a few on both sides who do take it to another level, and that’s when the fireworks start. As a Conservative, Palin is a great choice and she will bring in those Conservative voters McCain hasn’t reached. And, whether we agree with her or not, she is the Republican choice. Last night on the “News Hour” on PBS, during an in-dept discussion with those who know and cover Alaska, it was stated that while she is a popular governor, and did a wonderful job taking on her own party in rooting out scandal, in-house she is not known as a good administrator. Some of her commissioners have quit. She also does not communicate with the State legislature including members of her own party which is a very strange position for a governor to take. At least GW worked with both sides of his State House. Alaska, unlike other states, does have a full treasury and is not suffering because oil reveues is making it possible to fund all necessary services so there is no need to raise taxes or cut the budget. This is not Palin’s doing, but it’s nice to be governor of a state that is enjoying good economic times. And, I fully understand why Alaskans want more oil drilling. (Again, this was discussed during interviews on The News Hour on PBS). While I would never vote for her because of her stands on social issues, I still think it is important to learn much more about her because she is a heartbeat away from the presidency. And as governor, if she can’t work well with her own State House and commissioners, I am left to wonder if she has the ability to work well with Congress or her own Cabinet if she were to become president. I look forward to learning more about her.

Carol You are one of the few people on here who disagree respectfully. There is usually more drama than that. Your post was concerned and reasonable.

Frannie, Thank you. I was upset with one characterization I saw of Palin, but I was not surprised given the source. And some McCain supporters have been intimating Obama is not to be trusted. And some we have seen actually do not like the color of his skin. These are not the arguments we should be having here at Wow. But I for one am happy that American girls can see that a beauty contestant can also be smart and look to politics instead of following the examples of Paris Hilton and others that know more about each episode of “The Hills” than current events and history. I also know Palin will bring more votes to McCain, and of course that scares me given I don’t agree with more of the Bush line of governing. She was a very smart choice. McCain making the announcement the day after Obama’s acceptance speech was a very clever move to get the headlines away from Obama. Hey, that’s politics!! And if Palin does become VP, it will still be historic. I thought the Dems did a great job letting people know Obama isn’t some scary alternative. His great uncle, a war hero just like your son, showed so much love to Obama and Michelle, as they to him. That alone should dispel the theories he does not love this country or has some “Muslim” alternative. Now it is up to the Obama campaign and the debates to bring it on. I for one can’t wait. What an election year this has been. But boy to I miss Tim. He would have been the best person to interview Palin on Meet the Press.

Anyone who serves to me is a hero. My dad may have not received a medal, but to me he was a hero too. Frannie’s son is also a hero.

Diane Sawyer was a beauty queen. She worked for Nixon.

Things were different then. Now the Miss American Teen contestant doesn’t understand the purpose of map skills.

Carol, Palin’s nomination will live in history in the same sense as George Bush’s nomination of Harriet Myers for U.S. Supreme Court — it’s historically cynical and ill-advised. Had the Obama campaign manipulated the announcement of Biden in the same way McCain did to steal the Democrat’s thunder, the criticism from the right wing media would have been huge. Here’s a list of the McCain talking points on Palin in case you haven’t seen them: http://www.wowowow.com/user/15575

I agree. And if you have been reading my comments you know I am no fan of this nomination. However, it will still make the textbook entry as the first woman VP if she should win. Let’s hope that does not come to pass. And of course the Right Wing media would have went ballistic. But that’s the political game. Rove knows how to play it well. However, I refuse to attack her personally the way Hillary and her supporters were attacked on this site.

Hi Carol and Frannie Em….late to the thread again….Don’t you love “concerned and reasonable”….we’re at our very best when we’re concerned and reasonable…yes?…It’s especially refreshing when we constantly hear the folks who hammer home the “fair and balanced” line dishing out daily doses of disquietude….

Thank you for the intelligence reflected in this opinion of Ms. Nevins. Up to now, I was coming away with the definite impression that quite a few of the the ladies here on Wow thought anyone who disagreed with them only did so out of being very stupid. That is not a way to win hearts and minds if you want their vote. Make no mistake, there are a millions of men and women out there in the USA who think John McCain and Sarah Palin are just the winning ticket!! And they will vote that opinion come November. The whole country does not have the same opinion as the more liberal side of the political aisle. When it comes to the economy and domestic issues they will vote that opinion. They may not like the war, but they won’t base their vote on that issue.

Please don’t confuse the thoughtful Ms. Nevins with the wingnut neo-cons.
