Slacker Uprising: Michael Moore Releases His New Movie for Free on the Internet

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Michael Moore, the director of the top-grossing documentary of all time, "Fahrenheit 9/11," is releasing his latest documentary for free on the Internet. It will be the first feature-length film from a major director to be released for free on the web.  Below is the just-released trailer for the film.

Called "Slacker Uprising," the film follows Moore on his 62-city "get out the vote for John Kerry" tour during the 2004 presidential campaign, where he used humor, giveaways and music to enlist an army of young people — "slackers" in Moore parlance — to vote Democratic. Starting out in Elk Rapids, MI, in front of an audience of 400, the tour grew to a point where up to 16,000 slackers a night would come together in auditoriums to see Moore and his traveling band of speakers, comedians and musicians promote voter activism.

The film shows highlights from the tour, which included stand-up comedy, zany marketing stunts like free Ramen noodles and clean underwear and performances by top musicians. It is a look at the genesis of a new political youth movement in America that, according to the producers, became "a generation of young people who would signal the eventual era of ‘Obamania’ that would take place just four years later."

"In the interest of fair warning, people who are not fans of mine will not like this movie," Moore states cautiously in the production notes. "This movie has way too much of me in it, and way too many tens of thousands of people liking what I’m saying. If you’re a McCain fan, this film should probably be rated X."

Downloads will be available on September 23 at the website Slacker Uprising.

In my late 60s I have the impression there really is a slacker generation. Yesterday, for example, a family friend whose children I watched grow up told me his oldest daughter following graduation from Smith returned home and works a yoga instructor! I frequently meet youngsters with good educations seemingly satisfied with mediocre jobs which pay just enough for the rent, food and internet access.

If it makes her happy, and she’s not moochin off the parents so be it. It IS her life.

Mediocre? She’s teaching and passing on a love for something that is ultimately more beneficial than a desk job - good physical AND spiritual health with a pinch of peace of mind. I see nothing slacker-ish about that. Like the other poster said, if it makes her happy, it shouldn’t be much cause of concern - especially if, as you suggested, it does pay the bills.

I think a lot of young people were neglected by parents on the fast track during the 80s (at least perceived they were) and also saw a side to the pursuit of the almighty dollar that didn’t appeal to them.

Farrah: He gets to be want makes him happy. Like the spider in the corner, we know he’s there, we just don’t engage him.

oh damn, old fingers…make that “gets to be what he wants to be.” Actually, I must apologize to my spider friends. I meant to say “stinkbug.”

I can’t help but respect Michael Moore, in spite of his flaws. I mean, when he sees something he truly believes to be WRONG, at least he goes out and DOES something about it…instead of sit at home in front of the computer bitching about it like yours truly. Gotta love proactive approaches (versus my reactive)!

I don’t think we are a generation of slackers. I think we just have different priorities - the top one just plain isn’t money anymore. It’s one thing to be comfortable, it’s something else to have a 5,000 square foot house and four cars - that you never get to enjoy because you’re working 60 or more hours a week to pay for all of it. Somewhere in there, you start missing out on life. So yeah, maybe we aren’t bringing home as much bacon, but we’re also not bringing home as much stress and unhappiness. If that makes me a slacker - then slacker I’ll be.

Dorothy: Slacker is not age dependent…Some of us, maybe even on this site, could be termed, Slackers ahead of their time. We are the group who stood up and screamed “NO” to the Vietnam War, to the same ole/same ole, We said “No,” to continuing racial inequality, gender inequality and economic inequality. We said “No,” to the perpetuation of “Father Knows Best.” In this case, Father =the powers that be. We said “Yes,” to collectively and actively having a say in what kinds of changes we wanted. “Yes,” to manifesting a world helathy for all. Michael Moore is one example of citzenry in action. There is the old adage, “they who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” Many of today’s power players and brokers have had time to assess the lessons of the 60’s and counter them. What they do not want to know, is that the foundation on which they stand is riddled with holes.. At best, all they can do is shore up the walls for a little while longer. I have been awaiting your generation’s coming of age. And now, the fun begins…. Injoy

Iris, you’re right - it isn’t about age. But it seems to me that lately people are far more willing to simply do what is going to make them happy rather than whatever it is that can bring home the most dough. To me, that’s a vast improvement. Michael Moore may be a little too out there sometimes, but he did all of this to get people involved in the political process, and that’s awesome no matter where you sit on the political spectrum. There’s nothing wrong with being a power broker. It all depends on what you use it for.

Slackers will be very happy as they all have the time and lack of responsibility to sit and watch it.

I respect Michael Moore for putting himself on the line like he does and using his art in the great old tradition of artists throughout the centuries, by shining a light on what is going on politically and socially in his country and in his times.
