'SNL' on Uncle Sam's Sanity Level for Giving Billions to AIG: 'Oh My God, Are You Serious, Federal Government!?' (Videos)

NBC

What doom and gloom? "Saturday Night Live" has so much material to work with these days that they’ve started airing twice a week. "SNL" aired yesterday at 9:30/8:30 PM central as part of a Thursday series of limited specials.

There was no ‘Sarah Palin’ (the real hockey mom) or Tina Fey (who’s been nailing Palin on the late-night sketch comedy show) on the added program, but "SNL" still provided some comedic relief to the negative economic news flooding the nation.

The highlights? "SNL’s" Weekend Update with Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers. The "news broadcasters" took the words right out of the general public’s mouths when talking about the tumultuous economy. The most hilarious bits are near the end — beginning with the segment called "Really with Seth & Amy." Here, they take comedic punches at the Fed for handing more than $85 billion (of taxpayers’ money) to AIG, who just six days later blew $500,000 at a swanky California resort to treat their top executives. (Click here to see a copy of an invoice from the week-long vacation. This was found at the thesmokinggun.com, and was reportedly obtained by the congressional panel that has been holding hearings this week about Wall Street’s crisis.)

Amy and Seth ocassionally let out this boisterous statement: "Oh my God, are you serious, Federal Government!?" — especially when questioning why Uncle Sam handed the insurance giants an additional $37.8 billion on Wednesday.

"SNL" also mocked Tuesday’s presidential debate — with Bill Murray making a special guest appearance. Unfortunately, this was just as boring as the real thing:

I love SNL skits, always have and this one on the AIG issue was just as entertaining. Really funny. But I have to disagree with wowOwow’s staff (yet again), the debate skit in which they showed McCain mindlessly dottering around the stage, walking into shots and getting in the way….come on, that was priceless. I never laughed so hard.

Who’s doing the Cindy McCain character on SNL? Did you see her today on the campaign Trail of Tears? Smiling and nodding and clapping? I’m sure that the “demographic” of the McCain audiences isn’t lost on you and your observant eye……

The simultaneous question and answer session was perfect. It really underscored the overuse of campaign rhetoric and themelines from both sides. (Does anyone else feel like they’ve been hit over the head with a two-by-four?)

Georgia, I could be wrong, but I haven’t seen them do a spoof of Cindy McCain. Like Palin and Hillary, she would be easy to do. I put Cindy McCain in the same category with the airhead who was having an affair with John Edwards. She knew John McCain was married, that his wife was sick and she still decided to cheat with him…..and then marry him a month after he left her. Ugh! But as I have pointed out to friends, I watch almost every political rally both Rep & Dem to stay on top of who is saying what. I have noticed that Cindy and John are not particularly affectionate. Have you noticed that? They hardly ever look each other in the eye. Conversely, you constantly see Barack and Michelle, hugging, holding hands, touching/rubbing each others backs….quite the contrast.
