Fired by Hillary Then Hired by Obama, Solis Doyle Speaking Out

Patti Solis Doyle, once considered one of Hillary Clinton’s closest confidants before the New York senator fired her from her presidential campaign via e-mail, is trying to get her life — and her reputation — back on track.

Solis Doyle was blamed for part of the failure of Clinton’s presidential campaign. Five months after Clinton fired her, Doyle moved back to her hometown of Chicago to work for Barack Obama as chief of staff to his vice-presidential pick (and is expected to help court Latino voters) and spend time with her close Mexican American family.

But Solis Doyle, who was accused of squandering millions of campaign dollars (which she denies) and not bringing others’ ideas into the fold, still has unanswered questions: Why did Clinton lose so badly and why was she to blame for the dysfunction? Why did so many of her friends turn on her? And why has Hillary herself distanced herself from the woman who worked for her for 17 years — through Whitewater, the Monica Lewinksy scandal (and more) and two Senate races. Clinton even read at Solis Doyle’s wedding.

"It’s really sad and discouraging and revolting at times," Solis Doyle, 42, told The Washington Post. "I have to tell you, I was surprised by the vitriol towards me. I think I’m a good person."

Solis Doyle, who used to be able to freely speak for Clinton, has not spoken to her former friend since February 10. Although a Clinton spokesman said the senator wishes Solis Doyle well, she privately has said she is "disappointed" in her former staffer and regrets putting her closest aide in the top campaign job.

"I put her in a job she was incapable of performing," one Clinton intimate quotes her as saying recently, the Post reports. "I’m out there killing myself … thinking a process exists, and no one said, ‘The emperor has no clothes.’"

Clinton loyalists were kicking and screaming when they heard Solis Doyle was going to work for Obama. The New York Observer has reported that those in the Clinton circle think Solis Doyle is shopping around a book deal and acted as a background source for a harsh Vanity Fair article about Bill Clinton — another reason perhaps Hillary isn’t happy.

Obama’s camp makes no apologies for the hiring.

"She is my friend — I make no bones about it," said Obama senior strategist David Axelrod, who, along with other Obama strategists, calls Solis Doyle a "team player," despite issues Clinton had with her management style. "But we’re not a [charitable organization]. We’re trying to win an election here. She brought a useful skill set."

Solis Doyle says she plans to reach out to Hillary and other Clinton staffers after the election. She’s trying to be confident in saying one day she and Clinton can mend their fences.

"I love Hillary Clinton. She played a huge part of my life for many years … She read at my wedding, she was there for the birth of my children. She is a part of my family."

Jaye: Thank you for the clarification, but I’m still confused by this. Why is it that the boss, Sen. Clinton, didn’t know that her staff had not organized the caucuses, or did not have a plan for doing so? Had she told them to develop one? Were they suppose to know a priori? If the woman who was fired was responsible for budget, who was responsible for strategic planning and execution and was that person fired?

Losing the caucuses is absolutely correct and that can be attributed to her staff mismanagement among other things they scrrewd up, including spending too much much money on big states early on-defending on cash form big donors and running out, and not using the internet—probably the single worst mistake of her staff of advisors and I use that word advisedly. Mt god she was 20 points ahead and then it was gone.

Frank, exactly, yes, yes and yes. They were conducting politics as usual throughout even after they saw the light of day but could still not get in step in time. We are living suddenly in a new world but they didn’t know it or what to do with it and that says volumes. Clinton treated Soylis-Doyle exactly as they have used and abused everyone around them in their “claw for the top”…the list is long and it just goes on and on. But, as to Soylis-Doyle’s contribution to the Obama campaign, that is a question.

It was an old-fashioned political campaign that didn’t work not now not in the 21st cent. and that was the downfall and that idiot staff of hers and there’s where the blame lies—

Well, somebody got screwed. Whether its HRC or Solis-Doyle, we have yet to find out. However, since HRC is the captain of the ship, so to speak, she should have known what her staff were about. I think it’s a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing.

I disagree that Senator Clinton should have known every detail of her campaign. She delegated responsibilities to those she trusted ,including Ms Solis Doyle, because that’s what CEOs do. Obviously, Senator Clinton over estimated. Ms. Solis Doyle’s abilities. Texas has a three step process. This year, where once the Democratic caucuses could have been held in the round booth at IHop, a cast of thousands showed up. Picture mob scene. By the time we got to the state convention in Austin, Obama already had the nomination, and Chelsea Clinton was on hand to deliver a message from her mother, asking Clinton supporters to join with her in supporting Barack Obama. I’m still not quite sure what happened. But if I was going to try ‘to clear my name,’ I wouldn’t go to work for the ‘opposition’. I’m with Marjorie on this one. Peace and grace

I don’t get it. Didn’t this woman do a pretty lousy job for Clinton? Maybe she’s being hired so they can do the opposite of what she advises.

Hiring Solis Doyle showed poor judgement and was mean-spirited. Would you hire someone who performed poorly in a former position? This action was clearly meant to embarrass Senator Clinton. She and Bill should keep walking and not look back. Their being used.
