Ladies in the Know Offer Obama WMD Advice

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Frances Fragos Townsend and Ret. Maj. General Donna Barbisch have some advice for how President Obama should approach the war on terror: Don’t underestimate the threat, and don’t just throw money at the problem.

In New York to talk about weapons of mass destruction at a Center for Security Policy event on Tuesday, Townsend, former homeland security adviser to President Bush, and Ret. Maj. General Donna Barbisch, former Defense Department director of the chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear program integration, stressed that while Obama could usher in a new era of diplomacy and fence-mending when it comes to how the U.S. deals with terror threats, he can’t let up on hunting the terrorists down — whether they be Al-Qaeda or anyone else.

Obama’s decision to give his first formal presidential interview to Al-Arabiya was "really smart," Townsend said, but "even if people around the world like us better, let us make no mistake: We are not going to prevent an attack by being liked more."

Barbisch cited particular concern with biological weapons, also known as "the poor man’s weapon of mass destruction."

"You can make ricin in your bathtub," she said, stressing the need for the public-health community to be involved in any preventative security efforts here at home.

Her advice to Obama as to how to handle this particular threat? Don’t put up a "false wall" and pretend we’re safe from biological warfare if we’re far from prepared. "We’re spending way too much money on things that don’t make a difference," she said.

Obama will not react to the middle east weapons of mass destruction with a critical eye towards future terrorist attacks on America.” You mean like Bush did about 9/11? And how can you possibly make an incredible assertion that I quoted? Do you have an in in the White House? I’m appalled by you utterly cavalier and erring assumptions. Do you really have any idea what you’re talking about?

Marjorie, I just asked my sister who lives in London, is an educator and a registered nurse, if she is afraid of the muslin community…her answer was short. “Lol, not at all. Some are my best students and work very hard”. My daughter worked for a restaurant chain in our town for 15 years owned by a family from the middle east. They have been caring, helpful friends for many years to my daughter and to my granddaughter who now works for them. There are people in all religions, walks of life who are “terrorist” and we should be vigilant. Who would have thought that the Oklahoma bombing could and would have happened. But it did and by American citizens. McVeigh and Nichols. Please, people get a grip and see things as they are not as some scary movie where everyone is a villian.

Hi Roger from Ohio. Seems to be very few of us here on wOw who color within the lines. It’s fun to explore. It’s fun to make connections between one thought and another until the whole seems to begin to make sense … a matrix … a web of understanding … maybe not symmetrical but coherent none the less. Let the crayons fly, Roger! But if it really gets to you, just bring it around again with a cogent insight. You’ll get your way in the end, I bet. Just IMHO … Peace.

You are, Roger. I’m hoping you turn out to be one of the “good guys.” You may already know, there are a few here: FP of course and Gulliver and James, for example. Looking forward to reading more of your posts. — R.

Documented Muslim upbringing? I asked you for sources the last time you brought this up, and got no reply. Where is this documentation? Anyway, Democrats aren’t basically socialists. A socialist is a person who believes that the state or collective should own and administer the means of production and distribution of goods, and that an egalitarian society with equal opportunities for all individuals with a distribution of wealth is the best way to do things. Democrats run on a platform that generally favors social freedoms, a mixed economy (i.e. the free market tempered by government interference) and progressive taxation. They do not advocate wholesale ownership of property by the state, etc. In any case, we’ve experimentally verified that having an ignorant and stupid president is extremely destructive. Obama is neither, and so I am sure he will do a better job. As for England and France, you have to look at the whole picture as well as the past in order to acurately assess what is going on. For instance, you simply can not ignore the affects of WWII on France today. In any case, I do believe that France faces problems because it does not respect religous freedom (and does not have a history of doing so) and attempts to force the Muslims to be assimilated. We simply do not have that problem here, nor will any president touch the first amendment. Another problem France faces is that it has made the system such that upward mobility is difficult, which means many immigrants are never given a chance to succeed. That is also not a problem for us here, though if we do not address the issue of illegal immigration from the Americas in a constructive manner it might be in the future. As for England, they do not have the problems that France has. Until our economy imploded, taking the world’s economy with it, they had continuely increased their economic footprint.

Thanks for responding, RJB. With all due respect, I provided that interesting link again at the beginning of this thread of research on Barack Obama’s past. I am not naive enough to believe that all of it is true. However, if a third of it is accurate then it, indeed, makes a very interesting read. Your last paragraph I found to be very interesting especially when you stated upward mobility is difficult in France for immigrants do you think it is because of socialism? With socialism in place, it has that same affect on complacent workers, noncompetitive minds, workers who cannot be fired no matter how lax they are on the job, etc. Do you find this true? When I mentioned France and England I was targeting the millions of Muslims who live in both countries and that number is increasing every year. It would be interesting to know the reason why. I have read that they are creating problems for them and they are scared. We do have a large number of Muslims in America but not anywhere near the number of France and England (and as I am sure you know they aren’t the only countries). I agree with most of your post however I do not agree that “democrats aren’t basically socialists.” I found a decent site that seems to clearly define democrats and socialism. If I may provide it for you…Socialism in America. The “spreading of the wealth” is, indeed, socialist. Thanks for responding to my post and thank you for providing your information. I enjoyed reading it.

if you believe a third of it”??? How about believing none of it and come to the realization that the man occupying the White House is first and foremost an American? If you think Medicare is “socialist” wait until your parents become ill and don’t have the resources to pay the hospital, doctor and drug bills.

I agree that Bush and Obama have very different visions of what is best for the American people. But I don’t agree that America should be scared. Alert, prepared, creative, engaged…but not afraid.

So here we go again about the Muslim connection…since when does Muslim automatically become a dirty word as if they are less because of their religion?? Lethal cocktails for all Americans and that is why exactly? So all of a sudden Muslims are everywhere and they are going to rule the world….come on now you need to get a grip here, is your answer to send them back from whence they came so they don’t sully the good old USA. One thing Bush has left behind for sure is this “fear factor” and folks are still living in that bubble that anyone or anything that is remotely connected to anything to with Muslims is a bad thing!!! No one will accept that Bush and his policies created more and more terrorists throughout the world and many are of Muslim faith seeing as it is their part of the world that is being occupied as in Iraq and the US backing of Israel against Palestine for example. So if we need to fear Muslims then we should look at our part in all of it also as creators of a good deal of it.

Hello Deber, I must take issue with your concern regarding President Obama’s Muslim upbringing. I share the same opinion regarding this issue as General Powell. We need not fear President Obama’s Muslim roots. We, must however, always protect our liberties, our Constitution, and our democracy. The socialists in France have done much damage to that country. Their racism has also discredited them in the eyes of many. Europe is paying a harsh price for poor economic decisions. We need be concerned with the same happening to the U.S. economy.

Rhonda, I couldn’t agree with you more! What most Americans fail to understand is that the United States is the least racist country in the world. The racism in England and France is extraordinary. How refreshing to read your post!
